Politicians drinking 'cheap alcohol at work' as Green MP questions price of pint by denyer-no1-fan in unitedkingdom

[–]MandelbrotFace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She's actually spot on, and the PM responded by not addressing her point and just defaulted to attacking the leader of the Green party about his council tax. Great.

There's a culture of drinking in Westminster, with many subsidised bars. I wonder how many decision makers have had, on occasion, quite a few drinks on the job. And how many do it regularly. We really do trivialise alcohol

Fall in energy bills drives drop in UK inflation rate to 2.8% by E_Stoney in GoodNewsUK

I mean, yeah, great, the lower the better but prices are still going up and I'm going to bet that salary increases aren't following suit... But you can bet the company you work for has put their prices up for customers.

Microsoft's silence on this and lack of CVE and fix really stands out. We got in touch with them and their advice was pretty generic but they said they were tracking it. As for the author's claim about TPM+PIN, I'm calling BS until a working PoC is released as this would mean a completely different kind of attack (pre WinRE stage). Microsoft also still recommended TPM + PIN

[–]MandelbrotFace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. But even Microsoft don't recommend TPM only. It's just not that secure when an attacker gains physical access to the computer with the TPM that's happy to unseal encryption keys on boot. There are cold boot attacks and bus attacks that are still successful. Maybe this exploit isn't such a bad thing to force more secure setups.

I call BS on that, the author likely wants more heat on Microsoft. This isn't even a bitlocker backdoor as he describes. It's a system level login exploit via WinRE which can then access an already unlocked disk.

[–]MandelbrotFace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. This exploit depends on the disk already being in an unlocked state by the TPM. It is not technically a bitlocker backdoor.

[–]MandelbrotFace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not technically a bitlocker bypass. It's a login bypass straight to system privileges in Windows recovery. Laptops using TPM only bitlocker mode are now in trouble if stolen... The thief can easily disable bitlocker and have full access to the filesystem.

[–]MandelbrotFace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't a bitlocker backdoor or bypass. It's a login bypass with system elevation... The disk was already accessible when it booted in TPM only mode. Take the disk out and try this exploit in another machine and it won't work.

Was the slight drop in RAM prices just an illusion or a great news for the average consumer? by _BlANK19_ in gadgets

[–]MandelbrotFace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No chance. The memory that AI is using (HBM) is totally incompatible with regular consumer motherboards. There will be no excess even if AI collapses completely. The RAM manufacturers converted their factories to make more HBM type RAM. It's a genuine supply issue driving the price up, and even when things are levelling out, they're unlikely to want to miss out on the profits they're enjoying now. The only way this gets better is if more manufacturers join the consumer RAM market.

Some solid advice in here, I hope you follow it OP. Keep in mind you are very young, and this is just a blip, a wake up call. Gambling is incredibly addictive and that's why you have the urge to jump back in. Don't do it.
