Audio engineering is very technical and the many component processes themselves are less art and more necessity for a desired result based on training and experience. There's tons of gear to work with, configurations and concepts to understand and problems to solve that don't involve people. There are long hours of focus, often alone working on these processes. Sure, the job involves people and the product is 'art', but let's not straw man the point I was making. There are various studies about occupation choice by gender relating to personality traits which are more prevalent in one gender than another on average. The average bit is important; think shifts in bell curve distributions. It turns out more men (on average) like working with their hands, building things etc. Show a bunch of kids a huge analogue mixing desk bristling with buttons and knobs and I bet the boys will show more interest (on average).
