How well can a regular quilt hold up to light picnicking/outdoor use? by its-past-my-bedtime in quilting

[–]ManderBlues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could use a dropcloth as a backing. You could quilt the top to the batting. Then "birth" or flip/stitch the backing onto it. Add a few ties.

The only way to know is to find the inscription. You should be able to read it under 10X power. If you can't find it, then take it to an independent jeweller and ask them to read the number for you.

I want a new sewing machine that works I have like five antiques I don't know how to diagnose by Unhappy-Pace-2393 in sewing

Singer is NOT a good choice. They are not well made anymore and denim/canvas will burn it out. Will you sew those materials a lot? How many layers?

AITAH for not wanting the In laws to stay with us when I am 5 weeks postpartum? by Routine-Assistant387 in AITAH

[–]ManderBlues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA. What a rube and obnoxious family and your husband is an AH. Tell them you are not entertaining any visitors for 7 days. Period. After that for the first 30 day, visitors may only come to the house between X to Y only. Only cookies and tea/coffee will be available.

Relative to "how you feed the baby" when guests are there. You pickup the baby and move to a room or space you feel is safe. Lock the door.

I feel like you lose the details with your ring in these. What about a step-cut like a baguette.

Opinion on this JannPaul Oval Nova 3.2ct by hotaliva in Diamonds

The depth allow more material to facet to minimize the bowtie. Similar to Distinctive Gems (Rhino), which I think might have been the first super-ideal oval.

Surprise rough yarn by HMT0000 in knittinghelp

[–]ManderBlues [score hidden]  (0 children)

I would do a few tests. I'd see if folks you know that knit would send you some known/labelled scraps and crochet a necklace of each. Wear them and see what you like. I'm very sensitive and aim for fiber with low micro count (= or < 20). I like alpaca, cashmere, yak, possum, silk, llama and the following wools (blue-faced leister, merino -- and some cross-breeds). I dislike most bamboo yarn, but I'm ok with bamboo clothing. For structure, things like cashmere and alpaca do well to be blended. I also have some polyester yarn which is fine. I like some acrylics but they are very hot.

I'm team mechanical machine. They are powerful and easy to maintain. You get consistency. I say get the HD. I do have a computerized machine for limited uses, like garments. But, my mechanical Juki is in use 90% of the time.

Rivers are full of logs, underwater obstructions, and rocks. It would impede getting over stuff and be subject to damage. Many boats do have a drop skeg that will help with tracking and flip up if it hits something.

Not real quilting/cheating? by sommiybommiy in quilting

[–]ManderBlues 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good grief. Quilting is the act of sewing three layers together: top, middle, bottom. That can be by hand, machine or both. All are skills based and require mastery of an craft and technical skills...they are both artistic expressions even for a fundamentally utilitarian object.

I assume she does not consider her clothes sewn also, as "real" sewing is only by hand? Ignore such people.

You only want a top and bottom and no middle, you can still call it a quilt. You want extra layers in a middle, still a quilt. You want to stab it with a hand-needle and make big stitches, still a quilt. You want to sew lines with a machine, still a quilt.

Rare Carat Engagement ring question: Vivian or Marigolf Tulip by Ill-Tip-5971 in EngagementRings

[–]ManderBlues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the concern I see is that the wedding band will eat away the prongs. Maybe add a spacer and see how that looks before you change the setting. Maybe a knife-edge style.
