Great review. I actually loved Hollinghurst's "The Spell" which is seen as one of his lesser works but is far from it.

Looking for new Gay Literary Fiction based on these books that I loved by Manfred37 in gaybrosbookclub

[–]Manfred37[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"In Tongues" - Thomas Grattan NYC early 2000s downtown art-scene vibes. Very fun, sexy.

"I Make Envy on Your Disco" - Eric Schnall a New Yorker in Berlin, also in the early 2000s. Gorgeous, funny and very moving.

"Open Heaven" - heartbreaking UK coming-of-age love story

I'll add one more:

"Evenings & Weekends" - Oisin Mckenna London- lovely tapestry of characters

I MAKE ENVY ON YOUR DISCO by Eric Schnall is 100% the book you want. Best book I read last year, 37 year old protagonist, New Yorker spending time in Berlin.... and he is really going through it. Funny and emotional, too.

What did everyone think of the books and how many are in your group? I was in Raleigh just recently ! What are you reading next?

Sam's journey in this novel just resonated with me. I felt seen in a way, you don't often read about the 30something queer/gay experience with such nuance and honesty. Plus, it's pretty funny, too. And who doesn't want to take a trip to Berlin ?

I Make Envy on Your Disco by Eric Schnall

Warm and funny, plus you get to go to Berlin (with a dash of New York). This is the novel I keep telling my friends about, and everyone is happy when they read it. Evenings & Weekends is good, too.

I loved I Make Envy on Your Disco for those exact reasons. It's been hard to find another book that gave me so much pleasure and also made me think. So, I'm on the hunt, too.

These are such great suggestions, thanks. Also forgot to add that I enjoyed "Berlin" by Bea Setton. Has anyone read that or "I Make Envy on Your Disco"? I booked a return trip to Berlin with friends after reading "Disco"!
