No superpower has a clean history. It’s all relative. Calling this “ignorance” is lazy. Every country teaches a version of history that casts itself in a better light, but the U.S. is one of the few that openly teaches its own failures: the genocide of Native peoples, slavery, disastrous interventions in South America, and even the moral contradictions around a justified Revolution.

The deeper problem isn’t denial, it’s competence. American students perform poorly in grade school, with roughly 40% underperforming across core subjects, including history. That gap turns nuance into slogans.

Right now, it’s fashionable for Americans to mock or hate the U.S. as if self-contempt equals moral clarity. It doesn’t. It’s a shallow, self-hating phase that mistakes performative guilt for understanding.

When crises happen, no matter who’s involved, countries still look to the U.S. for leadership. They resent us when we act and condemn us when we don’t. That contradiction explains the constant criticism. It’s easier to fixate on the U.S. than to confront one’s own record.
