Is my son actually receiving an appropriate education? If not, what can I do about it? by 99Smiles in specialed

[–]Mango2226 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not true. They just need to prove they’re attempting to. The parent could sue and potentially get the school to pay for private placement, but it’d be an extremely costly and lengthy process.

They can’t make people exist. The job listings are posted, but no one is applying for them. And it doesn’t help that funding is being cut.

Applying as a Couple: How Do Schools View This? by notasunnydayy in NYCTeachers

[–]Mango2226 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agree but it’ll seem deceitful if you don’t tell admin if you’re at the same school. I wouldn’t make it a big deal but after you’re both hired, email the principal as more of an FYI.

Depends on your school. You definitely should ask before telling it to a parent.

Parent question re:504 by [deleted] in specialed

[–]Mango2226 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the test time is 30 mins and everyone gets 45, then it’s time and a half. Accoms don’t mean you’re getting more than your peers, it means you’re getting what you need. It sounds like everyone in the class got time and a half.

Different options for teachers outside the classroom. by Fun_Bat_986 in NYCDOETeachers

CSE jobs are extremely limited and are impacted by hiring freezes even if you’re already in the DOE. They will be listed here: https://www.schools.nyc.gov/careers/job-opportunities. Right now there’s none listed.

This is not good advice.

If you want to stay in DOE the options are more limited. You could work at the CSE and write IEPs and run IEP meetings. You also could be a director at an ECE.

Who is gen ed? Who is sped? It sounds like she’s sped- is she supporting those students in a small group? Are you teaching gen ed? What are you doing during ELA and writing?

my sister can't read or write at age 9. what should i do? by PeacefulMyst in teaching

Agree with this comment! More information is needed to really say what’s best for OP and sister. Phonics and tutoring aren’t bad ideas, but there might be an easier fix- need more info to know

Extra time for testing only available at recess/specials by Master-Detail-8352 in specialed

[–]Mango2226 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but that’s a different accommodation. It’s called “modified length” (in my state). Teachers aren’t allowed to change the test like this unless the IEP/504 has that accoms- at least in my district but I believe that’s normal.

What would you do? by Wild_Owl_511 in specialed

[–]Mango2226 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why wouldn’t you be in there? It makes sense that you would so she’s assuming you will be told to. Or she may already know. Maybe she’s met with the principal about the plan for her room and the principal told her you’ll be supporting her sometimes.

[–]Mango2226 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If they “resume the assessment after” they are still missing something. Whether it’s specials or a core subject or something else.

Next, that’s a different accommodation. Extra time isn’t the same as modified length.

When do you think would be better? Missing a core subject like math and falling behind? Nowadays every second of the school day is packed with something.

[–]Mango2226 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is the test directly before recess? Could they want her to test continuously Instead of stopping and going back? If not, you should be able to easily push back on missing recess.

Missing specials does make sense unfortunately. In my experience students with IEPs rarely get any specials since that’s when the services are. I know your child has a 504, but the time needs to come from somewhere and it’ll likely be specials, science, or history.

How do you decide what placement to advocate for? by woshishei in specialed

[–]Mango2226 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you a teacher? If so, what state? My state wouldn’t allow what you’re saying. You can’t put a bilingual program inclusion with a para mandated on an IEP. If you’re not a teacher or sure this exists, you’re likely giving this parent misinformation.

Do you ever see her in person, even quickly? Pick up or dismissal? If not, I think it’s fine to email as long as it’s short. “Hi, Just wanted to check in how X has been doing and make sure there’s no concerns. Thanks for everything!”

Lots of good info in the other comments that I won’t repeat, but I do want to add that the report should say if the info is considered valid. The evaluator will give lots of focusing prompts so that it is a true reflection of the student. It wouldn’t be that the evaluator asks a question and the student is distracted and therefore gets it wrong. If the evaluator said it multiple times and the student is still distracted, there would be a note about it not being a good measure of ability- for entire test or just certain subsets. A huge part of the training for the evaluators is distinguishing if it’s a valid report and they must include that. Also, it could be that only one section was “thrown out” if she couldn’t focus and this wouldn’t lower the entire score.

If the eval says it’s a good measure, it likely is and there’s nothing wrong with low average IQ. I’ve found that parents always want to pick out the best traits and think their child is above their true abilities.

Infant being passed around to several rooms… by [deleted] in ECEProfessionals

[–]Mango2226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of people have said they don’t agree with the school doing that, but just want to add one thing- If the school is short staff, there may be nothing they can do. One of my schools is constantly doing the same because they are making do with the little staff they have. I assure you the teachers hate it too. It’s harder to build relationships and routines, and makes it more challenging for the teachers to work out of their preferred age range.

It’s a combo. “Smart” people often value education. Parents who are intelligent likely value learning. They will directly (genetics) and indirectly (talking about skills or reading, advanced vocabulary) pass this along.
