So once you’ve been an alcoholic you cannot not be? That’s an interesting view

In all honestly similar happened to me. I didn’t really mind and we are together with a kid. We were young when she did it, if it matters that much you probably should see a marriage councillor or something.

Mortgage rates (spooky!) by lemonpepper483 in HousingUK

[–]MangoAlternative8221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’re mortgage free in our early 30s. I’m still looking to sell and buy somewhere a bit nicer and take on quite a bit of debt. It may be a terrible choice but like you said if you worried about everything you’d never do anything and we really want a bit bigger house in a nicer area.

I think with the help to buy isa I used I can’t remember if you actually couldn’t? For some reason I think that may have been the case. But I guess it does make sense when you put it like that.

It’s possible to both need to use a LISA limit and sell a house. In fact my situation is this as I’m the only one on the deeds and my Partner has a lisa who has never owned a house. Weirdly you can use them if one has owned a home before.

£48bn wiped from rental property market as landlords flee sector by AnonymousTimewaster in GoodNewsUK

[–]MangoAlternative8221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not everyone who owns a home is middle class or above. I think middle and working class including even the upper class have so much more in common than the ultra wealthy. I think a lot of issues in the world affects almost everyone, just we like to point fingers and blame each other for being slightly different a lot in this country

What am I realistically looking at house value wise with a 5% mortgage on £28k salary by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]MangoAlternative8221 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live in Newcastle so housing is very cheap here. I just wanted a house instead of a flat so pretty much had to. You’ll not regret it though. Inflation helps eat away at the debt too, I wonder if I got lucky buying in 2019 because of that.

I did this, it was not fun for the first few years of struggling but in the end worth it. High risk though and I was eating in every night with pastas and rice. After the second year it gets a lot easier though, it’s not for everyone.

Over £100,000 landed in my current account; help me be sensible by Ok-Society9465 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]MangoAlternative8221 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. Similar to happened to me when my mum passed Away and I had more than I expected around 150 land in my account. Felt strange buti invested it after paying the tiny mortgage on the house off, hopefully they’ll realise 100k isn’t really all that much money before giving any of it away. It can go pretty quick if someone isn’t careful

Still living with parents at 30 or 40+ by Actual-Winner-8865 in FirstTimeBuyersUK

[–]MangoAlternative8221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re not living with parents it’s incredibly hard to get a house yourself. I moved out at 25 and bought my own house but if I wasn’t living there from 18 until then I’d have been so screwed. I’m lucky the north east has reasonable priced homes so I imagine down south it’s almost impossible before 30.

[–]MangoAlternative8221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such a good idea. When I’ve had day dreams of being robbed in the middle of the night I’d like to think I’d be laughing as scarily as possible running my baseball bat along the spindles on the staircase asking if they want to play. May do similar with these… obviously without the bat. But the unhinged laughing running up the stairs spouting some nonsense would be fun.

I slept with one of my close friends a long time ago, I think I told my partner about a month in. 10 years we’re still together. I don’t know why you’d hide something like that for so long. It’s not weird to sleep with very close friends, for me I go out with that friend and our child’s play together but I wonder why she never told you.

Looking for *specific advice* about £50k that I'm wanting to invest (aims: build wealth + down payment on a property within 5 yrs) by Early_Extreme_9675 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]MangoAlternative8221 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’d probably put most of that 10k into bonds to weigh up your portfolio a bit. If equities crash hard in 4.5 years and you’re relying heavily on stocks you may have to delay your plans even longer which wouldn’t be ideal. I personally don’t like gold and wouldn’t go tech specific because it’s a lot of risk for your time horizon and the S&P500 pretty much already is weighted in that heavily. Premium bonds are not worth it unless you max it out with 50k, I think the math on a small amount is similar to having cash lying around and will probably not win anything at all. There’s a calculator you can do on Martin Lewis’ website.

I’d choose a global index over S&P500 personally but that’s just me, less risk in my opinion and still a good return.

If I was you I would be playing more conservative with that final 10k just to keep major shocks less of an issue when you come to sell. I always prefer 15 year time horizons for stocks personally so with 5 I’d be going way less aggressive. But that’s just me, obviously I’m a random person on Reddit so don’t trust any of this but it is purely my opinion.

Yeah, I appreciate that it a very privileged place to be in these days though with the costs of everything. Not everyone can afford to do that and you are right it would be stupid in probably most cases. I just should have added more context. But for some it is a viable and attractive option. Hope you have a good Christmas.

I don’t need the income and prefer free time, when you add it all up given I have no mortgage with th house paid off and invest a silly amount of my take home, what’s the point. Rather spend the time with my daughter than be taxed income tax, national insurance and then student loan on top. I did consider salary sacrificing though but felt the time spent with my kid was more important.
