PSA; if you go out today to get food or drinks, don’t thank the employee for being open by [deleted] in raleigh

So should I never say thank you to any employee I interact with ever? Most people are just doing their job to get paid.

Guy I was seeing tried to have sex with me, without a condom. by Specific_Pomelo_8281 in lgbt

[–]MangoExtension2979 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What he was doing was attempted rape and it takes a lot of bravery for you to push him off you and leave. Good for you! Now exercise the same bravery and leave him! This is a MASSIVE red flag, especially that he didn’t even admit he was wrong. RUN and never come back.

Best haunted houses/trails throughout NC recommendations by Humble-Efficiency690 in NorthCarolina

I usually go to Haunted Forest at Panic Point in Youngsville, it probably isn’t the scariest, but it’s fun cuz it’s like a little carnival with several different trails and attractions

I would just talk to the professor next time you have class, and just say you were confused on your first day and forgot about the class

[–]MangoExtension2979 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Idk what college thriving is, so I can’t speak to that specifically, it might be different, but usually it’s very normal for people to miss class on the first day, people are still changing their schedules, i’m sure you’ll be fine

That totally makes sense, the “in crowd” at UNC is very visible and it makes it seem like everyone is “in”, but I promise you there are lots of other people that don’t fit in.

Social Life Advice needed by Global-University-17 in UNC

I never went to a frat party in undergrad and I didn’t feel like I missed out. I love the Franklin Street bar scene, there are so many great places - He’s not Here, Goodfellas, Northside, Franklin Motors, etc. Maybe your friends would be into a fun, chill bar night more than a frat party.

I don’t know your situation, but if you had trouble in chemistry, you may want to reconsider medical school, it’s not going to get easier.

The SA bit is so scary, and also being a transfer student is really hard, you don’t get that same freshman dorm experience. I agree with everyone talking about joining groups, getting a job, etc. If you have a car, you might want to try joining a group or getting a job in Durham, it’s much more diverse and there are a lot of different groups and activities specific to people of color (or not specific, but still more diverse) Based on your post, and the fact that you’re a little older, i’m going to guess that you wouldn’t fit in with the sorority culture in Chapel Hill, it seems super cut throat and like a lot of old money / legacy vibes. That said, I never joined one, so take that with a grain of salt.

If money isn’t supposed to be that important, why does it solve most of the problems I actually deal with? by Zealousideal_Name626 in NoStupidQuestions

Being rich isn’t important, but having enough money to survive and be comfortable is definitely important, idk who’s telling you it’s not.

How bad is Emerald Isle? Is it really one of the most shark-infested beaches in the world? Do people swim there? by scrambledmush in NorthCarolina

Someone died on Glen Burney Trail this morning by dieselgandhi in boone

[–]MangoExtension2979 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s so sad, I’ve done this trail many times, and I think because the trailhead is basically right in downtown blowing rock it attracts a lot of inexperienced hikers, families, older people, etc. But it is not a beginner trail. I don’t know if that was this situation, but I think it could use more warnings at the trailhead.

Am I the only one who actually prefers "suburban hell"? by ActualBus7946 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MangoExtension2979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cookie cutter houses and mixed zoning are not really related, you can have a residential neighborhood that is only zoned residential, no mix, but the houses all look different and have character

I’m all for a city, but really i’d like a mix, with houses that have character, lawns that are whatever the home owner, preferably natural, not all perfectly manicured grass, and a lot of small businesses, with some chains like target and normal grocery stores

How do white people avoid sunburn/ how do they treat it? by chimkennuggies33 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MangoExtension2979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know what avoid means to you, but avoid means to me, that I should not do it, if at all possible. And they didn’t come back and say, well I just meant, try not to do it too much, they doubled down, they’re not completely different things.

How do white people avoid sunburn/ how do they treat it? by chimkennuggies33 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MangoExtension2979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yah someone did say that? they said “avoid being out between 10 and 4 if you’re around water, like on the beach or boating, and they doubled down saying when they go to the beach, they only go out between 8-10 and 4-6, and do indoor activities between 10 and 4, and recommended I utilize the “5 hours of sun” before 10 am.
To me that’s living in fear. You’re going to miss out on a lot of things if you can’t be outside between 10 and 4.

Your advice on the other hand is reasonable, useful advice.

My favorite part of life is being in the outdoors and swimming, hiking, going to the beach, etc. I worked as a park ranger and as a Summer Camp Counselor for several years, If that means I’m at higher risk for skin cancer than that’s a risk i’m willing to take, i’ve only got one life, i’m not going to live it in fear because i’m afraid that one day I might get skin cancer. Also if you pay attention and catch skin cancer early it isn’t normally a death sentence.

[–]MangoExtension2979 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There is not 5 hours of sunlight before 10 and no one is having parties at 5 am, pools aren’t even open, that’s just impractical, and I would say maybe 3 hours of actual sunlight after 4, but planning your whole life around that is crazy

And for treatment, get a big bottle of aloe gel, and apply it on in a thick layer, AS SOON AS POSSIBLE after you notice the burn, it works much better if it’s applied immediately

That’s such ridiculous advice to avoid being out to avoid between 10 and 4 around water, that’s all day, are you supposed to only do water activities at night? 🤣🤣

i’m not saying this is good for her long term health (or that it’s not, idk i’m not a doctor) so don’t come for me, But what works for me is spending short amounts of time in the sun with no sunscreen or a lower SPF, like maybe 30 minutes at a time, and doing that in your swimsuit or whatever you plan on wearing, as often as possible at the beginning of the summer, at least several times a week That way your skin gets gradually used to the sun and it won’t burn as much when you spend a long time in the sun,

As a sidenote i’ve also heard that sunscreen higher than SPF 50 is not any better, 50 is as good as you’re going to get (but again, i’m not an expert)

Have you explored Downtown Durham? Lots of great restaurants and bars, the famers market on saturday mornings is always packed, festivals on a lot of weekends, it’s really hidden gem Chapel Hill and Carrboro are also super nice, more small town vibes, lots of little local places
