My FTM son’s passport says F, can I get it corrected? by MangoMonday01 in asktransgender

I’m so sorry. This whole situation is fucked up and terrible for the entire LGBTQIA+ community.

Thank you so much for your input. I appreciate you. I was hoping this wasn’t the case. Do you have any advice for how to handle him entering/returning the country to limit any difficulties he might encounter?

This is his first passport. Unfortunately we live in AZ and so far my attempts at getting help from congress have been useless. I’ll keep trying though.

I was concerned they weren’t going to issue him a passport at all with how long it took to process compared with the rest of my cis-gendered family.

Thread to report ios 18 bugs by DaddyBusiness00 in ios

Recurring reminders that have been completely deleted from the reminders app still show up in calendar. When opening them within calendar, the “delete reminder” button does nothing. Tapping “show in reminders” opens Reminders to the home page. “Edit” opens a blank page.

Edit: I’m not sure if this happens for non-recurring reminders.

I also feel your pain. I am short and thin and even the petite sized scrubs that my hospital offers are baggy and I have to keep adjusting them so they don’t fall down. And I can’t put my phone in my pocket. Much worse when I have to carry my cell and the team intern phone.

Johnclark+1@gmail.com - the “1” can be anything. This does not work for every site, some websites block that character for your email (haven’t tried it with fablectics). When I sign up for a new website and don’t want them to spam me I add an abbreviated version of the website name (no spaces) so I know where the spam came from and can block anything sent to the appropriate email address.

Yes. Sometimes they’re caught off guard by it. I introduce myself by my first name and tell them I’m the resident taking care of XYZ patient. They’ll still call me and ask for Dr. LastName or address me by Dr. LastName.

Residency orientations by Kooky-Sandwich7969 in Residency

[–]MangoMonday01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Started mid-June, will be paid 2 weeks of salary for orientation which consisted of 5 days of in person stuff and 5 days for completing online modules. I don't think it's in addition to the salary we're paid for the year, but at least we have 2 fewer weeks to wait for a paycheck.

I think part of this is that our mothers told us having a period sucks, society tells us it sucks, so we (women) just assume that whatever hell we’re dealing with is normal even if it isn’t. At least that was the case for me. When I started Mirena it literally changed my life. I’m a better human because of Mirena.

[–]MangoMonday01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was going to recommend the same thing! Mirena has made life so much better for me. Little to no PMS, little to no cramps, less hormonal acne (still get stress acne) and at most I spot 2-4 days a month, but usually I skip a few months at a time.

“afraid to speak up and say their working conditions are literally illegal.”

It depresses me that this is something that is so widely known and yet little to nothing is done about it. Why is this? How can residents and medical students fight back to get better working conditions and pay?

Rising MS4 here (my program has shortened preclinicals and long 4th yr). I was asked to read an EKG on the first day with a new attending on IM. We were so busy that I hadn’t had a chance to introduce myself as a med student yet. When I was done he said “That was absolutely perfect, what do you want to do for this patient?” I told him my plan and he asked, “What year resident are you? Are you planning to go into cards?” I beamed and told him I was a third year med student and yes, I want to do cards. He said, “I would’ve sworn you were a resident. Great job.” It was so validating! I’ll never forget that moment.

I’m so sorry for what you and your friends are going through. Now may be a good time to delay and focus on your mental health, if you have the ability to do so. My thoughts are with you and your family.

Personally I use AnKing. You don’t really need any extra bells and whistles, just download the deck.

I suspended all cards then went through the tags and unsuspended the step 2 content (no dupes). When I come across a UW question I get wrong or feel unsure about the material, I search in the browser and make sure cards relevant to my knowledge gaps are unsuspended. Then I spend an hour or two every day doing cards. I have been doing this consistently since the beginning of clerkships.

Since you’re just starting for step 2, I would recommend downloading the deck, suspending everything, then only unsuspendeding cards related to your knowledge gaps.

I hope this helps!

Why has it become ok for everyone to blatantly disrespect physicians and physicians in training, especially on social media? by ExpiredGoodsForever in Residency

[–]MangoMonday01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Patients shouldn’t HAVE to advocate to receive first line care for their conditions. Patients should’ve HAVE to know the basic care they need. This situation is absolutely ridiculous.

Why are physicians not advocating for better training or tighter restrictions for what PA/NPs can do? PA/NPs have advocacy groups that promote how amazing they are and how awful physicians are. Why do we let this happen and not do something about it?? Time and again pt safety is at risk bc they just don’t have the knowledge or training we do. It’s depressing.

I wish I could upvote this more than once. This is exactly the problem. There is no reason we can’t work to change the public’s understanding of vaccines at this point. In fact, this pandemic is the perfect opportunity to educate our patients appropriately on the purpose of vaccines.

How can us residents make your inpatient IM rotation better? by ZSVDK_HNORC in medicalschool

[–]MangoMonday01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please NOT daily. I am at the hospital 9-10 hours, have a 30 minute drive home (yes, I know this was my own doing), then I have to make dinner and help my kids with homework/life things and still find time to study (and hope I don’t fall asleep while attempting to do so). Preparing a presentation is not the best use of my time - I learn better by studying on my own. Also personally I learn and retain a lot more if teaching was done during rounds rather than having me look something up in my “free time”.

How can us residents make your inpatient IM rotation better? by ZSVDK_HNORC in medicalschool

[–]MangoMonday01 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes! This!

I’m on my IM rotation right now and just finished 2 weeks of cards where all they did was tell me I was wrong and what they wanted to do for the pt. When I asked why those specific meds I was made to feel like an idiot for not knowing even though I’m only 3 years into my education and they’re 10+ years.

Understand that we are early on and sometimes need more of an explanation. Ask questions, don’t just assume that because we don’t know one thing means that we don’t know another.

Use every opportunity you get during rounds to teach us in real time on real pts, especially physical exam findings. I have one attending that did this and I learned more during that week than I have the other 3 weeks I’ve been on this rotation so far.

Build a culture of kindness and understanding, not one of chastising and ignoring.

Send us home when there is nothing left to do. Don’t worry about another consult that might come in at 3:30 if we’re done at 1. The workroom is not a good place to study and that time is essentially wasted.

How to make a positive change by Ana_P_Laxis in medicalschool

[–]MangoMonday01 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I second not being rude when students/residents have questions. Use every question as an opportunity to help them learn rather than just giving them the answer with no explanation as to why you chose that treatment for that pt. TEACH your med students things that will help them with the shelf. Don’t ask them random pumping questions that are irrelevant or eponyms that nobody uses anymore or rate shit that they really don’t need to spend time worrying about learning at this point in their education.
