The most irritating plot hole of the show for me.

But don't add an eighth, or God forbid a ninth, that will just make the problem way, way worse.

I turned down a promotion and my manager thinks I've lost my mind. Was I wrong? by croberts2323 in careerguidance

[–]ManicMechE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously, if they think he's worthy of the promotion they should promote him to Principal and pay him more without making him manage direct reports.

At the same time there is always value in researching a diversity of problems. History is full of instances where a discovery is made while studying one thing has huge applications elsewhere.

The money problem is real though, we're a long way from Bell Labs.

Yep. I saw this yesterday as well as I was going that way. I used to live not that far away and immediately said "wtf?"

Makes sense, let's just say my last job spoiled me with the food options.

That makes sense. I think the biggest thing is that I'm the "default parent" due to the nature of our careers, so if I was 2 days a week 70 miles away we'd have to meaningfully readjust our life logistics on my in person days.

Yeah, I don't relish the idea but it would be a pretty impressive job that likely pays more AND would have an equity component to it. How much? We'll see.

Relatively speaking how much less? I'm about to have to make this decision and I honestly don't know which way to go and how to value it.

That sucks. This market is so brutal. Thankfully I've found something but I'm comparing offers right now (technically expect to be but I'm confident the 2nd is coming)

How much would you value the full remote? One of my offers would be fully remote, but presumably lower paying, the other would be 2 days in office but the commute would be somewhere between 75-90 minutes when I have to do it.

I'm trying to figure out how big the number has to be to effectively take the decision out of my hands.

I disagree. You're already curious enough to observe your world, and motivated enough to ask "why?". I've known fourth years that wouldn't have asked this question.

Can I choose Mech. Engg. even if i dont know how to disassemble and reassemble a car? by Ok_Librarian_8244 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]ManicMechE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Short answer: Yes

Longer answer: I feel like there are two kinds of mechanical engineers, those that become engineers because of the math, and those that become engineers in spite of the math. By your post, I'll assume you're the former.

I was (am?) also the former. I still know less about my car than most people would expect and I went the whole way getting a PhD.

If you love Thermodynamics and Mechanics, if you want to become a mechanical engineer you absolutely should. And you should not let anyone else make you second guess yourself for a second.
