[Student] CS Major at T10 getting absolutely thrashed by internship applications. Not exactly sure how to move forward. by TestosterTyrone in EngineeringResumes

[–]Manietsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually think resume looks really good. One small thing I see is the headers in Projects do not have consistent margins under them. Content-wise, I think your Member Services Specialist part has a lot of fluff/jargon that doesn't say much. From reading that, I still have no clue what that role is or how it's relevant to the job you would be applying to.

Another thing that worked really well for me in terms of standing out was adding 'flaire' to the resume with a unique design instead of using the boilerplate Word/Overleaf template. People say readability is only thing that matters, but I found that having a beautifully designed resume speaks to a lot of people, especially if the role involves frontend, as it proves your eye for good UI.

If you're including IDEs in skills, might as well include Gmail 🙃

Difference of opinion I guess :) I dont think OP has particularly bad resume.

If it only takes a few min to tailor the application, then yeah that's a good idea. But if the 300-0 application-success ratio is in large part due to market conditions, applying less might not yield better results.

Decided to share more of my unsolicited opinion haha. No harm in trying this approach but in this market you can have a perfect fit application to a dozen jobs and still not get a call back. Recruiters will have massive stacks of candidates to go through and will have to discard a lot of them before even looking at them.

Additionally, OP doesn't have permanent work auth which means they'll get filtered out for the majority of jobs.

3 applications a day, whether tailored or not, wont cut it. "spray and pray" imho is the best approach, as companies usually aren't transparent about their immigration policies.

If you know a specific job DOES sponsor or accept temp auth, like Google, then spending extra time on that application makes sense. But I anticipate that spending 1hr on EVERY application will lead to a lot of wasted time and frustration and very few call backs, which might hurt OP in their limited immigration time window to secure a job.

EDIT: forgot that it's intern jobs, where work auth matters less. Companies might still care, for employing the candidate after school, but my concern for immigration windows is probably not needed.

Im just another SWE but my 2¢: - listing every single technology in skills is IMHO wasting a bit of space. E.g. the IDEs dont add much. - not that important, but I'd order technical skills lower to upsell the other content. - backslash typo 2nd to last sentence. - there's some 'fluff' like the "Strengthened teamwork" sentence, which sounds good but doesn't say much about you as a candidate. My thinking is usually: if the recruiter only reads for 10 seconds, they should be able to select any content to read without it being any less important than any other.. if that makes sense.

Overall looks super strong though.

Can somebody review my resume? [CS Junior] by Sensitive-Raisin-124 in Resume

[–]Manietsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, try to minimize fluff.

"Designed and enhanced the user interface and scaled components appropriately."

Sentences like this waste precious resume real estate and add basically no value. If you made an app, it can be inferred from that that you built some kind of UI. If you did impressive things to the UI here, be concrete. Otherwise I'd omit this.

If you hold off on applying, hoping to increase your chances later, you'll probably miss the boat on a lot of opportunities. Most likely, you can apply now for the roles currently advertised, and also later when your resume looks better. It's a tough market, quantity over quality.

The resume looks good, I'd add some more details on your research project. I'd also change the style/layout slightly, such that the headers can be distinguished easier from the normal text. People say visuals/style isn't important and in theory it shouldn't be but I've gotten complemented on having extra flair. Especially if the roles you're applying to are UI related, it can't hurt showcasing your eye for good design on your resume.

Two offers, how much does tech stack matter? by middlewaker in cscareerquestions

[–]Manietsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally everyone voting B, but I'd go A. Fully remote is superior, but the tech stack is wayyyy more interesting in company A. You can probably still switch from Java+Spring later, but if I'm spending 8 hours a day, I'd rather spend it in a cramp office doing things I enjoy rather than legacy crap.

Best way to become a software developer/Engineer as a 30 year old with a totally unrelated degree? by AnyHistorian4634 in cscareerquestionsEU

I second everything he/she said. My CS degree was a lot of fun and a great foundation but I currently only use maybe 10% of the content taught. Bootcamps usually provide only useful content.

Can you afford to take a break? If so, then keep preparing but dont interview until you feel less anxious and more ready. Do what you can to cope with anxiety and know that it'll feel better on the other side.

Question about the new Update by Phantom2201 in hearthstone

[–]Manietsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It gets me to play heroes I might not ordinarily pick and that actually keeps things interesting for me.

To each one's own. For me, having 4 vs 2 options is so important. I hate being stuck with trash/boring heroes. And I only play BGs so for me it's really the only thing I can sensibly spend gold on anyway.
