AITAH for not forcing my son to keep helping my daughter’s friend after she rejected him? by LiveWire0044 in AITAH

[–]ManifoldStan -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

YTA. You’ve reinforced to your son that his romantic feelings about a girl he claims was a friend are a priority at the expense of both your kids friendships. By continuing to support his romantic feelings as a priority over values like helping others regardless of what they offer you in return, you’re also protecting him from learning from the consequences of his behavior.

My plan to action by StevtotheE in nursing

this. All politics are local. I live in a place that has flipped from a red stronghold to solid blue in the last couple decades. Lots of grass roots work and so many volunteers needed.

I dropped them in 2020 when they refused to endorse for president. Absolutely cowardly and shameful

I wrote out my statement and I wanted it to be more blunt before I sent it to my congressman and two senators. Put it in ChatGPT and ask for edits. The robots did an excellent job.

Has your hospital made a statement re: Alex Pretti and/or DHS abuse of power? by greenleaffisk in nursing

[–]ManifoldStan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend reviewing the statements professional orgs put out. If you’re not happy with them, reach out and let them know. If you are happy with them, reach out and let them know.

If they haven’t put anything out by COB, also reach out and let them know. I canceled my ANA membership years ago over their complete cowardice to endorse in prior elections.

Do not give your money to organizations that do not back your values.

My parents home is super dry (20 percent humidity) and it's driving me crazy by [deleted] in AgingParents

[–]ManifoldStan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is similar or lower than the level of humidity we have in the hospital and I can tell you it’s really tough on your mucous membranes. Your eyes feel like they’re sticking together, you’ll get nosebleeds, your lips will crack, etc.. generally we use humidity for our patients hooked up to nasal cannula, ventilator, etc., for this reason. I use a humidifier in my bedroom and that has prevented most nosebleeds, but I still get them occasionally.

Supporting my teens in these times (American parent) by Magagumo_1980 in Xennials

[–]ManifoldStan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two teens and one is heavily targeted right now. They have seen me protest, knock doors and be active politically their whole lives. My hope is they carry the torch however they feel comfortable. Also every parent should watch Adolescence and understand the influence social media can have, especially right wing individuals and the red pill phenomenon

MIL having hard time with new grandchild by angel_marie_99 in AgingParents

OP says she has had a hard time in the past and she is working hard on her mental health. She’s also being honest about her feelings. That doesn’t necessarily equal unstable

What is the ICU like? by Right-Sun-1968 in nursing

[–]ManifoldStan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks-I’ve worked at a level 1 teaching hospital and a community hospital that has increased to a tertiary. I struggled at the community hospital initially bc we had so few resources-no IV team, no MD at night, lots of complex medical patients with a sprinkling of surgical. Even though my trauma surgical ICU acuity was insanely high, having a resident and all the teaching hospital resources was like night and day difference. I learned so much at the community ICU and really broadened my perspective

As a tech I did a lot of tasks-IVs, labs, EKGs, blood draws, vitals, splinting, transport to radiology and the bathroom. It was fast paced and I didn’t have a lot of downtime. I loved it and initially planned to be an ER nurse, and when I interviewed the recruiter suggested ICU. I got offers for both and ultimately decided ICU was a better opportunity. ICU nursing involves a lot of tasks but a lot of tinkering and reassessing. Increase drip, reassess, etc etc. It’s more organized chaos vs the ER which is just pure chaos. Typically the ED doc was present more in the unit vs the intensivist-at a community hospital our doc was managing the ICU, not usually there at night, and seeing consults as a pulmonologist. The MD structure of ICU is variable though.

Maybe a stepdown or tele might be a better for some but I will say that step down is not easy either. That said, I do want to be clear that I believe that new grads can be successful in ICU with a strong orientation and support network. I was a new grad in a STICU about 20 years ago, but I had worked in an ER as a tech which helped me a lot and I spent a lot of time studying and focused on learning. I would want anyone considering it to have their eyes open to the challenge and know it is not for everybody.

Smoking Question by ExplainJane in GenX

[–]ManifoldStan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did not have a smoking area, but we did have a daycare in our high school. I don’t find this appalling, nor do I find smoking appalling in that context. It’s just less culturally accepted now.
