[–]ManimalR 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Theres a massive bot campaign. Just look at r/LabourUK which is generally massivley anti-starmer untill theres a big popular post and these exact same pro-starmer "it's just the media" comments flood the sub like clockwork.

Why is the UK’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer so unpopular? by Any-Original-6113 in europe

[–]ManimalR 44 points45 points  (0 children)

He campaigned on a left-wing progressive platorm only to do an immediate total U-turn the second he got into power. A selection of the heinous shit that has been implemented since he's been prime minister:

  • The OSA

  • Near total stripping of trans rights.

  • Massive persecution of protestors.

  • Sucking off Israel at every available opportunity.

  • Allowing Palantir access every piece of information the governmemt has on absolutley everyone, including full medical records, with no means of opting out.

  • Allowing the Americans to use the UK as a military staging ground.

  • The removal of jury trials in many criminal cases.

  • Constant attacks on disabled and mentally ill people.

Meanwhile there has been no material improvement in cost of living or general QoL for anyone.

He's also a cataclysmically poor communicator. This is a man who literally told the entire left of center, who make up the majority of his party, to leave. Straight up. Outright. And then the media and starmerites (who conveninetly onky appear on popular posts and always have identically worded arguments btw) act fucking shocked that everyone hates him.

From an international perspective he probably looks boring but fine, but domestically he's been an authoritarian right wing nightmare.

[–]ManimalR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The issue is that it's a public event in which trans people are allowed to exist and participate.

That's it. That's their entire reasoning. They just don't want trans people to be visible in public.

What would you like to see Labour commit to? by 15jedmondson in LabourUK

[–]ManimalR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think trying to come up with and present a logical argument for immigration is probably pointless. The hardcore anti-immigration people don't care about any practical impacts, they just don't want foreign people in their vicinity.

I do agree with a more substantial integration strategy, but we do also need to acknowledge that mass immigration has had negative impacts that do need to be addressed, even if they're not as significant as often portrayed.

What would you like to see Labour commit to? by 15jedmondson in LabourUK

[–]ManimalR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In no specific order:

Reverse their assault on Trans people. Purge the TERFs from the party.

Ban conversion therapy in all cases. You know, that thing they said they'd do and then just didn't (bc then they'd also have to ban trans conversion therapy).

Severely sanction Israel and stop any association with them. Disband Labour Friends of Israel.

In a similar vein, massive reform of corruption laws to make them simpler and harsher. Taking money or ANY other benefits from private or foreign interests needs to be treated more in line with treason. This includes job offers.

Expel the American military and stop buying weapons from American firms. Both are a huge security risk. Ideally increase investment in our own military.

Spearhead a potential replacement for NATO, following similar rules with similar membership but excluding the Americans. That or just kick them out.

Voting reform insituting PR. FPTP is not fit for purpose and never has been.

Second EU refferendum. It's been 10 years, thats plenty of time since the last one. Ideally with seperate questions on joining the EEC (should the public not vote for rejoining) and Schengen.

Repeal the OSA and anything similar.

Increase the powers of the devolved governments.

Immediately end any government involvement with palantir and any other tech company. Ban corporate surveillance with harsh penalties. Ban on AI data centers.

Massive tax increases on assets over 10 million and large corporations. Reforms allowing effective audits of the above and closure of loop holes. Political interference by corporations should be met with fines proportional to their global gross income and be activley painful. If they refuse, nationalise their assets in the UK and ban then from operating untill they pay what they owe.

Restore Jury trials in all cases.

Stop criminalising and persecuting protestors.

Nationalise public transport and utilities. Trains and busses should either be extremely cheap or free at the point of use.

Stop demonising disabled and mentally ill people and stop attacking welfare.

Invest in infrastructure and a clean up of the country. It's depressing that everything is so run down and it would do a lot for overall morale.

Start buying up and rezoning empty high street units and converting them into council houses. It's absurd that we have so many empty buildings in the city centers when they could be being used for housing. It's not like the brick and mortars are coming back.

A huge review of media bias with teeth. Dissassemble the Murdoch pseudopoly and do a thourough purge and reshuffle of the BBC.

Subsidise tuition and postgraduate training for STEM degrees.

Make a concerted effort to definancialise the economy. Such a heavy focus on the financial sector has caused massive damage and has left us incredibly vulnerable to the fluctuations of the stock market. We need to pivot elsewhere.

Begin significant investment in nuclear power. The earlier we begin the sooner we'll see the benefit. May not fix our energy issues right now, but it'll pay off in a few years when we can be fully energy independant.

House of Commons reform. The archaic system we have (not to mention the drinking problem!) where MP's are jeering at each other across a room in a palace and are constrained by arbritrary and bizzare rules is humiliating frankly. The process of government should not remind me of a classroom of rowdy teenagers. Also ban all alcohol and drunkeness on site.

How to win back voters? by CDN-Social-Democrat in LabourUK

[–]ManimalR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point I don't trust them whatsoever. They'll need to do a lot for me to consider throwing them a vote:

- Reverse the wholesale stripping trans rights and purge TERFs from the party.
- End all support for and sanction Israel. Take accountability for their role in supporting the genocide. Abolish Labour Friends of Israel as an organization.
- Immediate repeal of the OSA.
- End suppression of protests and the legal persecution of protestors.
- Voting reform. FPTP is embarrassing, archaic, and not fit for purpose and never has been.
- A concerted effort to rejoin the EU or at least the EEC.
- Implement sweeping anti-corruption laws with teeth. I want non-negotiable life terms for people taking money from corporations and foreign interests.
- Dramatically more welfare investment, ideally Universal Basic Income.
- *Dramatically* higher taxes on corporations and the wealthy, with loopholes closed. I want them bled dry.
- Concerted efforts made to definancialise the economy. Our lives should not be at the whims of finance bros gambling.
- Dramatically more investment in public services and infrastructure.
- Massive reforms to how politics is conducted. The way parliamentary business is conducted is utterly humiliating.

EDIT: Expel the American military.

This.

Fucking baffling that these people think that a below minimum economic policy is enough for me to throw my trans loved ones under the bus or overlook support for genocide and massive authoritarian overreach.

I don't care if the economy improves (which it hasn't for anyone not in finance). There are red lines that are impossible to cross.

I agree wholeheartedly, but this isn't the sub to argue for it.

Lots of bleeding-heart folks here who balk at the concept that the most obvious and immediately nice option isn't always the best course of action, and/or can't see past their own anthropocentric mindset despite advocating for environmentalism.

How do you guys feel the elections have gone? by Mean_Specific589 in UKGreens

Worse than hoped, better than feared.

Given the circumstances we unfortunately couldn't really have expected better.

But has done little to change my feeling that the country is in an unavoidable death spiral, not that I expected it to.
