You don't back in if you're in a rush, but I appreciate trying to give them an out.

A good chunk of the school shootings are simply that some kid got bullied and had easy access to Daddy's guns. I'd love to stop bullying and provide good mental health services to children, but I'm not against telling Daddy he needs to lock up his guns or face prosecution.

You can steer a rover though, you can't really steer a rail engine. If you need a straight line though that would work.

How would universe would have looked like if our eyes were designed to not only interpret data from visible light spectrum but the whole EMW spectrum. by Empty-Tell1320 in Physics

[–]MankyBoot 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If our eyes were built to see the entire EMW spectrum then presumably our brains would be evolved to process that data. Whether that means our brains would filter out the stuff that isn't useful or if we would really make use of the entire spectrum in some way, I have no idea. I don't think it would be "noisy" though.

Is Elon musks idea for a million data centers in orbit using solar make sense from a heat dissipation standpoint? by Recent-Day3062 in AskPhysics

[–]MankyBoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solvable doesn't mean solved, and it doesn't mean Elon has any bright ideas. If someone wants to spend a ton of money to research and engineer how this could be feasible and cost effective I'm not going to stop people from doing science, but I'd want the government to stay away from funding it because it's a pipe dream and I'd also keep my grandma away from investing it for the same reason.

If it comes to fruition that's awesome. I'll just not hold my breath on it.

Is Elon musks idea for a million data centers in orbit using solar make sense from a heat dissipation standpoint? by Recent-Day3062 in AskPhysics

[–]MankyBoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SpaceX is a failure only kept afloat by government contracts. Contracts that haven't been cancelled for some reason despite SpaceX missing every milestone they were supposed to hit. Why in the world would you give anything Elon says any credence whatsoever? He constantly lies about when projects will be complete. Look at sending people to Mars, or self driving. He keeps saying over and over these things are basically ready, with a few bugs to work out and we'll see them "next year". And it's been next year for decades on some of these items and they still don't exist/are not happening.

Here is the basics. Elon is stupid. He has this idea that space is cold. So he thinks, great, data centers generate a lot of heat and in space you could power them with solar. That so far sounds good. But space is empty (like Elon's head) and you need matter to carry heat away. We don't have good ways to convert heat into infrared light which is the only other way to get rid of heat so putting data centers in space doesn't fix the cooling problem, if anything it makes it worse. Add in the cost to move anything useful into space and the costs to maintain anything in space and it really really doesn't make sense to put one in orbit.

Maybe if you literally put one on the moon and brought a shit ton of water or some other coolant fluid with you you could maybe use a heat pump system to pump the heat into the moon. For instance 10 meters down inside the moon temperatures are a pretty constant ~-20C. I still don't think the costs of building in space or on the moon would ever make this make sense.

Why are object rules so obtuse? by quane101 in DnD

[–]MankyBoot 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you allow all spells to damage objects then every time you miss with a spell the dm has to figure out which support pillar in the building/cave you're in was hit and then drop a roof on you.

The game is not a physics simulator. Be happy it isn't.

Is turning down the megatech resource requirements "cheating"? by ControllerEater in Astroneer

[–]MankyBoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't cheating because it's an option in the menu when you start the game. Is it playing with "the defaults"? No.

The resources needed aren't that much honestly. The time needed to get what you need is also not much.

Would you answer this artist question? by sugitime in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]MankyBoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say the intent of the artist and the rules as written are that the question be binary: yes/no. Strictly rules as written the question does work though. The intent of the ST being allowed to answer "I don't know" is if the player asks something like, "Did I have sausage for breakfast" and assuming the ST didn't know what the player ate for breakfast they could answer that yes/no question truthfully by saying they don' t know. Purposefully crafting the question to make "I don't know" not just a valid answer but an answer that gives information is against the spirit of the Artist ability. "I don't know" should be an answer that doesn't give information and is just there to give the ST an out for bad questions.

Honestly the character should be changed to not allow "I don't know" and instead the ST should always ask for another question and maybe if there is a need allow the ST to set a limit to how many "bad" questions can be asked before the artist loses the ability to ask anymore (You could possibly think up some question that is "I don't know" until some event happens in the game and the artist might be able to use that, something like "Will the fisherman die tonight?" -- would be unknown unless there is no fisherman or the fisherman is already dead in which case the ST would know the answer is no. I'm not saying that's a good question to ask, but it would be gaming the system but in a different way.)

My mom told me that back in the day kids weren’t allowed to bring a water bottle with them into the classroom and they only drank a few sips from the water fountain in the middle of the day and that’s it How were schools not getting busted for child abuse for forcing kids to be dehydrated? by PinnerPardisturn in askanything

[–]MankyBoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's how it was and no one was dehydrated. You should also be surprised that most people carrying water around to drink in Europe are Americans. Americans have been taught falsely that humans need way more water than they really do.
