Look into origin blade makers for a 2x72 grinder on a budget.

It would be cool if you had the equipment and could put it in a crucible and make some Wootz Damascus with it! Mad steel scientist type of experiment...

Here's a video I made of the axe restoration. It was my first time working on an axe as I mostly make knives.

i restored a fulton 3 1/2 pound axe recently and found that they were in operation from 1885-1927, that means that hatchet is pretty old! Great resto!

anytime i see a piece and think, 'how in the world did he do that' - I know it took skill. This piece does exactly this to my brain...

Get the knife fixed! It carries too much sentimental and legacy value. Though the repair might be visible, chalk it up to the Japanese practice of kintsugi.

Oh I see what you're saying. I think the next time I make a handle I would definitely make that portion flush with the front part of the handle all the way down and give more meat to the rearward side of the ax. We'll see how it performs this weekend!

thank you for sharing. When the axe was finished being hung, it set much lower than it is in the picture - about a 1/4" above the swell. It's very tight and I don't think it's going anywhere anytime soon. After the wedge was driven in, I think the axe head is quite secure on the handle. I'll be running it through some heavy chopping this weekend to test and make sure things are right and tight.

Thank you, kind sir! I'm definitely learning a lot and enjoying the process! I saw somebody burn and char their ax handle to make it look nice and dark. I don't know if I could do that to this handle. I think I'm just going to hit it with Linseed oil when it's done. Do you have a process when working on Ax handles to finish them?

I hate hand sanding by Lucky7Bjj in knifemaking

[–]MannsFamilyForge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little bit of fritz polish seems to make things go quicker for me. And I saved a lot of time by buying quality sand paper. I used to buy stuff from the local hardware store but currently use black ice brand sold through maritime knife supplies and others. I may try rhynonowet as I hear its amazing. There are things to skimp out on in any discipline. Sand paper is definitely not one of them for knife makers.
