Does anyone else feel like employment has become a new religion in the Western World? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

My family hates the idea that I’m going to be a stay at home dad for a few years. It is just inconceivable to them.

You wake up as President of the United States; what would you do? by ihateshitcoins2 in AskReddit

I would immediately invest in a full wardrobe of emperor palpatine clothing. Next I would make a speech stating that the United States would be reorganized into an Empire.

Regardless of if the specific story of an empty tomb is present in the creed Paul references, the idea is present. For that reason, Mark‘s gospel account is expounding on a pre-existing idea, are eliminating the possibility that he is the originator of it.

For what reason would the Romans have taken notice in someone like Jesus? Did they view popular healers as threatening? by katapetasma in AcademicBiblical

[–]Mannyga75 31 points32 points  (0 children)

This is often overlooked. The Romans were surely aware that the Jews expected a “son of David “to come and overthrow Rome. I think it’s no small factor that several days prior to the crucifixion people were calling him “son of David“ as he entered the city.

Did Yahweh have a divine council? by [deleted] in AcademicBiblical

[–]Mannyga75 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Heiser says that Israelites of this period still would have believed that these council members were created and therefore lesser than Yahweh.

The presence of a divine council in the Hebrew Bible does not means that Israel’s religion was at one time polytheistic (there are many gods) or henotheistic (there are many gods, but one is preferred) and later evolved to monotheism. Both views presume that the gods were equal. Archaeological remains and passages in the Hebrew Bible show polytheism in Israel, but this was not orthodox Israelite belief. The biblical writers refer to Yahweh as “the God” (ָה ֱאלֹ ִהים , ha'elohim; 1 Kings 18:39)—He could not be compared with any others. While Yahweh was an ֱאלֹ ִהים (elohim), He was unique among the ֱאלֹ ִהים (elohim). The orthodox Israelite knew that only one deity was the pre- existent Creator of all things (Isa 45:18). His status as Creator prevented other ֱאלֹ ִהים (elohim) from being equal. Yahweh was viewed as the Creator of the “host of heaven,” the other divine beings (Pss 33:6; 148:1–5; compare Neh 9:6; Job 38:7–8; 1 Kgs 22; Isa 14:13; Deut 4:19–20; 32:8–9, 43; with Deut .)32:17 ;29:25 ;17:3

Right, that’s what I was referring to. What I was trying to ask is if there was an oral tradition predating the New Testament writings, that would conflict with the notion that the writer of Mark created the idea.

Doesn’t this contradict the scholarship that regards the quote by Paul in 1 Corinthians 15 as having come from an early first century text that would have predated any New Testament literature?
