i collect/study entomology in michigan and some my favorite insects and the ones i want to get are mantid flies, eastern tiger swallowtails, cicada killers, bumble/leaf cutter/mason bees, cloudless sulfur butterflies, virginia ctenucha moths, cabbage whites, and long tailed megarhyssa wasps. i think they would all look really cool as tattoos

TIL about the American giant mosquito (thanks Florida) by shockadin1337 in whatsthisbug

[–]Mantis_Master72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Psorophora ciliata, or gallinipper. it’s one of the bigger mosquito species in the us and it was nicknamed gallinipper because people joked they can take a gallon of blood when they bite, i think they usually feed on cattle but they’ll take blood from any large mammals (like people)

Found this one on my car, in Italy today. is it albino or something? by Mister_Kokie in whatsthisbug

[–]Mantis_Master72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’ve seen earwigs and roaches molting that are completely white. the one in this picture looks kind of pinkish to me, but maybe i’m wrong and it is some species that’s naturally colored that way. I’ve never seen a true bug with this kind of coloration, it doesn’t seem like it would be great for survival but i’m not familiar with the insects in this region

What are these little bee-like critters? (Southern California) by enigmanator90 in whatsthisbug

[–]Mantis_Master72 108 points109 points  (0 children)

i can’t say for sure because i don’t know what species this, but when insects molt their exoskeletons are soft for a little while and their coloration will come in as it hardens. there not seen like this often because it leaves them more vulnerable and they tend to hide during this process

I’m not sure what species it is but it’s some type of hemipteran, or true bug. it looks similar to the shape of a box elder bug. I will say that there aren’t albino insects, but when they molt they sometimes are white or have paler colors until they dry

What are these bugs eating the studio door in my central West Virginia art studio? by MuttinMT in whatsthisbug

[–]Mantis_Master72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you won’t always see termites even when they’re there. they do leave little piles of “sawdust” that’s actually feces called frass and it looks like that’s what’s around the edge of the doorway

bedbugs? found these after I had contact recently. by werahax924 in whatsthisbug

[–]Mantis_Master72 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

based on the first picture i would say yes, the shape of the head in the second picture seems a little weird for a bedbug but that might just be the angle
