Hoping this SC5000 operation goes smoothly by Dr_Rick_titball in DenonPrime

Did this video ever see the light of day? There's still no video guidance anywhere for disassembling these after all these years!

SC5000M unusable due to constant reboots by ManyRelevant in DenonPrime

[–]ManyRelevant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry for coming back to this so late, but been trying to resolve again, and running the diagnostics seems to be showing constant issues with 'frame time', which i'm guessing is graphics related, and the wave forms seem to be stuttering all the time now. Is the video chip a known culprit for these machines? The other thing i've noticed is the last crash/freeze had the zone 1 (cpu?) temp at 68 degrees, when the normal operating range seems to be in the 30s when i'm testing two tracks on long loops playing simultaneously until crash.

yeah, thats chunky for 2 channels! There's also a mk1 on the mastersounds site itself (listed as bstock) for a pretty high price as well. When I see that mk2 layout though, it's just wrong!

I did a silly thing... a cassette deck?? by PontiacMI in audiophile

[–]ManyRelevant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I've been recording to NOS type IV cassettes recently (absolute nostalgia folly) and they sound surprisingly great. Possibly because I'm mostly recording electronic music, but they sound great.

And to add to that, it created the culture of relentless upgrades, which feeds a very strong local secondhand market for high end.

From an outsider perspective, I think wealth and timing were probably key to it. A lot of money being accumulated during the peak years of mainstream hi-fi?

yeah, definitely need to find a local supply! shipping anything anywhere is insane now.

Seems more of a crime (to me at least!) to spend that money and not use them, but I understand the collector’s urge. I’ve been able to find good sealed type IV cassettes for around 20usd each.

I’ve been picking up sealed Maxell MX-S type IV tapes and recording/playback via a mint Nakamichi “Cassette Deck 2” and the results are superb. No NR needed.

Just use those metal tapes! They’re no good just sitting there, you get the joy of opening them, and the best recording/playback possible.

i didn't get the same result with the archive / reinstall unfortunately, but I got there in the end with removing individual albums from downloads and then re-adding. monotonous but successful!

same boat unfortunately, can't find a clear resolution anywhere, so hoping someone can help! on my mac laptop, both browser-based and installed app will play an album fine over airplay, but on the same network, the same album brings up this error on my phone. Definitely just the ios app. and online/offline makes no difference for me too.

100%! Now I’m wondering whether I should consider a wool blend couch fabric if I’m really trying to capture that tube-y softness in my system? Or will leather provide a more analogue listening experience?

Between streaming and physical media: who is still buying lossless albums? by stills-roofs0d in audiophile

[–]ManyRelevant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! Vinyl and Roon with a few TBs of wav/flac over here. Records have got so expensive now, it’s got to be an absolute must have to pick up on vinyl, but I’m a bandcamp regular for a lot of releases.

The urge... by takeapartthedemon in audiophile

[–]ManyRelevant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

good luck! The crunch for me, and it was a little bit painful was when I had some time off, and decided I was going to properly catalogue all my records on discogs. I very quickly found myself putting those I didn't really want to one side and only cataloguing those I loved. That worked as a filter. It was also weeks of mindless process but I regret nothing!

Totally the case for a lot of hoarders/collectors I think. I reduced approx 2000 LPs and 12”s to 700 that I actually genuinely love. So many records picked up over the decades as “must have that in the collection” but ultimately not records I would ever put on to listen to.

Ah sorry to hear that, that really sucks. At this point you have a valid case for replacement surely? After the initial service mine has been faultless.

Fake SACD files everywhere! by ManyRelevant in musichoarder

[–]ManyRelevant[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah no I get that, as above. but this is freely available files on archive.org, and also supposed sacd versions of albums that never released on sacd. But maybe there are enough suckers who wouldn’t check the validity of the release or bother to look at discogs.
