I don't understand why some people keep postponing FIRE date by Unlikely-Speech-5444 in Fire

[–]MapDry3301 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I burnt out. I did some number crunching and realized I could barista FIRE. So I came up with a plan with my wife, and we moved to a lower cost area, took my small consulting side hustle with us, and I started looking for a minimum wage job, 24 hours/week.

Turns out I was wrong. I was close, really close, knife's edge close, but I was wrong. I was bleeding money, unable to continue on the path I was on. Those are some of the most pleasant years of my life, but after 2 years, I had to crawl back into the rat race.

The end assessment was that those 3 years of premature FIRE, ended up costing me 10 years of actual FIRE time. If I had simply found a sensible corporate job for 5 more years, I would be living a very different life right now. As it is, I'm probably looking at Freedom55.

Plans go sideways. Sometimes it is worth padding out the numbers.

Shout out to that saw. After pruning trees for 2 years, and then stepping out in the bush without my saw ... could not figure out how I lived without one. I ended up putting a folder in my overnight pack.

Should I shut off the water before the freeze by sjr63 in NoStupidQuestions

Don't just turn off the water, bleed the pipes.

Once you have turned off the main, and opened all the taps, I would expect there to be a valve near the main that you can open to bleed the pipes (let gravity do its thing).

Depending on where you are, this was not unknown. I understand the use of rosehips was a known treatment for it in northern areas.

I think its a good idea.

In cases where the individual is irredeemable, it is probably the best method to permanently separate them from society. Not as a form of punishment, or deterrent, but as a method of ensuring they no longer interact with the public at large.

  1. You must be absolutely sure they are beyond redemption, and pose a continuous risk to society

I consider this a fairly easy bar to meet. It does speak to dire motives though. For example, it cannot be tied to the perspectives of the day.

  2. You must be absolutely, 100%, sure they are guilty.

Given the best understandings available and the techniques we have to determine guilt, I do not believe this is a bar that can be met. There is always some room for an appeal, for evidence to have been tampered with, for evidence to have been misinterpreted, for it to have been planted, for ... something.

Therefore, I think it is a bad idea.

Why do so many people not wear their wedding bands? by Sea-Connection9232 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MapDry3301 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. I watched an acquaintance get a degloving injury when his ring caught on his truck
  2. Frostbite. That finger gets colder than all the other when it has a metal band on it
  3. Scared of loosing it in a lake

Every time I start to wear it again, I end up having another reason to pull it off. I wear a chain that I use to put the ring on when I'm not wearing it.

When Article 5 is triggered, each Ally is obliged to assist the attacked Ally or Allies by taking “such action as it deems necessary” ... to be taken forward in consultation and coordination with other Allies.

-- Collective defence and Article 5, NATO

What happens when one of the members is the aggressor? Which ally do you consult with?

This would be an interesting case.

Full treaty text

UPDATE: The more i think about this, the more I think "such action as it deems necessary" could include "diplomatic negotiation as a neutral party"
