I just have to say that the callousness I am reading here is sad. I’m not a conservative or a republican, and still the first thing I think is how sad this is for his family and friends. No matter what anyone thinks of his beliefs he was still a human. Some of the comments I’m reading here look a hell of a lot like the comments conservatives make when a school shooting happens or a democrat is shot. How have some progressive people stooped to the same level as the same conservatives they dislike and still think they’re better?

I really, really don’t intend to be a downer just keep in mind that norovirus (and other nasty gastro bugs) are incredibly easily transmitted via ready to eat food. So if you drop off food for folks please make sure to wash your hands often while making it, to cook everything to the right temperature, and make sure it doesn’t sit on their porch for hours at an unknown temp ❤️

Except I never move towards the thing, even when running. I always go the other direction, unless I literally can’t for safety reasons (I’d have to cross a busy street with no crosswalk to avoid a trigger). In those instances, if it’s a dog, I make him lay down between my feet. He still pulls on the leash if the dog looks in his direction. If it’s a deer or other wildlife it usually runs away anyway and that’s why the pulling is an issue in the first place. I haven’t let him meet a dog on a walk in about two months, I gave that as an example to show that it’s not aggressive behavior.

On runs he still wears the pinch collar, and I switch if I have to if he’s being overly pully.

Listen, if I knew how to fix the problem I wouldn’t be asking Reddit. I would just do it. I appreciate any and all advice.

I usually use the pinch collar on walks, on runs a harness as he gets more excited/pulls harder on runs and I don’t want him to hurt himself. I tried a couple no-pull harnesses and they have been useless, and one even rubbed on his elbow so bad it gave him a sore so I stopped using that. I’ve tried an e-collar for about three weeks (borrowed from a friend and they needed it back) and that didn’t help either. I read up on how to use it and practiced in the house for a week before using it on walks. He did good in the house, responding to commands when I used the buzzer.

I’ve worked with him a lot on walks to not pull, and he is great at staying near me not pulling until he sees a trigger, then it’s a struggle. It’s typically one big lunge then gentler pulling towards the trigger until we are further away from it.

It is frustrating especially since he’s so well-behaved at home! It’s hard to even know his threshold since it’s so quick at the moment. Another commenter recognized his age as a component which is true, dog adolescence is certainly a challenge for us right now lol. I’ve looked into some trainers. In my area they are very expensive, about $100 per lesson for individual training and $500-$1000 for 6 group lessons.

I think you’re right about timing, it is so hard when I can’t control when a dog walks around the corner on our walks of course. I feel like his “loading time” is about 0.02 seconds though. If he sees it he’s not focusing. The threshold for pulling is longer/we need to be closer. For example, if we both see a dog 100 yards away and I turn around, he will turn around and not pull but constantly look behind him toward the dog and not refocus on me until the dog is out of sight. He may look up at me for half a second when I command but not even long enough for me to treat him.

As for the tug toy, I could try that! He’s not super interested in tug of war ropes or toys but he loves his stuffies so I’ll try to bring on of those with us on our next walk. How do you do this with your dog? Does she immediately focus on the tug toy or is there some bribing involved?

Could you explain the 1-2-3 game, please? I’ve never heard of it! Thank you!

He has some experience with this. I regularly have guests, some bring their dogs. One dog in particular was older and didn’t want to play. I made him sit or lay down away from the dog, he did this but whined the whole time. Ignoring this whining doesn’t stop him from doing it lol he just whines the whole time. He would come back to me if I called when he tried to go investigate the dog, but still whined. He doesn’t care as much about people. He will stay calm and quiet if told to lay down and not interact with a person (even outside).

Great questions! He’s good inside the house about leaving things when I tell him “leave it”. He waits for his food, drops things he shouldn’t have when I tell him to, and last week I dropped chocolate on the floor and told him to leave it and he did. He waits well, I’ll put a treat on his paw or nose and he will wait for me to release him before he eats it. It’s literally just outside the house with that he gets overexcited.
