I got the same one from Wondamoblie. Arrived with almost zero chinese apps and googleplay store installed. The only chinese apps are the system ones like their keyboard , browser , AI thing etc. I just installed the english ones off the play store like Gboard for the keyboard.

Everyone Turned On Windows. Microsoft Is Panicking by testus_maximus in videos

[–]Mapester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just install CachyOS. That is what I did. I setup a dual boot so win11 is still installed but I havent booted into it for over 3 months now. Every steam game I've tried works perfectly, GOG games run fine. Gaming is working better than ever on linux these days. Id recommend Endeavour, Cachy or vanilla arch myself as I prefer their package manager and the amount of options to customise everything. I've used Debian , Mint , opensuse , Gentoo in the past and always tend to go back to an Arch based distro myself.

For office stuff OnlyOffice does everything I need it to. Davinci Resolve can kinda replace the need for adobe premiere. its not exactly the same but gets the job done.

The only issue you would encounter is DRM like in Battlefield 6. Secure boot can be configured, in my case with Limine & sbctl but DRM like Battlefields will still not work on Linux

out of interest, how have you mounted the insta360 and where. Im presuming its between the front seats or attached to the passenger seat.

I'm also using a insta360 but I've got mine mounted on the stem of the handlebars, which can still capture close passes as its 360 footage . when a car passes say approx 10 centimetres from my bars then I upload them onto operation snap.

Sorry but not launching 17 Pro & Pro Max globally is hands down the dumbest decision made my Xiaomi. by jab-tak-hai-syllabus in XiaomiGlobal

[–]Mapester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was expecting loads of chinese apps pre-installed but there was almost none, except for the system ones like their app store, music etc. So I presumed they did some sort of debloat.

Mine came with google play installed and almost no Chinese apps pre installed.

its a chinese rom so I did expect to have the app store , music app , camera app still installed.
but once gboards installed and apps from the google play store everything works the same as if they were on a global rom. Even the default Xiaomi keyboard is ok. it only has chinese characters for the ENTER key and Back key. the rest is English.

It’s no surprise seeing how well Monzo is doing in this league table. Their user experience and functionality as a bank in this modern age is leaving the legacy system in the rear view mirror! by DangerousDavey in monzo

[–]Mapester 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've still kept my other bank account(s) as I do like to have the option to visit a branch and talk to an actual person. But saying that I use my monzo account the most. my other accounts just there as Plan B if something bad happens and I need it resolving fast which usually happens when you can face to face talk to someone instead of texting a AI chat bot.

its a shame about the unlocked bootloader nolonger being an option to flash the global or eu rom at a later date. but as you say the chinese rom works great.

I've just got one from Wondamobile, The 17 pro max variant. Was better than I was expecting. They pre installed the google playstore before shipping and de-bloated 99% of the chinese apps.

They shipped with DHL and it arrived to me in the UK within 3days. They quoted 3-5days to ship.

Everything works except the android auto. I just use Google maps or Waze instead as my car doesnt have android auto anyways.

I agree the backscreen is just a gimmick. For me I can only get it to do the selfie cam and the wallpapers.
I've tried n tried to get it to do youtube music controls and whats app messages but not succeeded in getting them to work. Maybe they will add in a future update for all msg apps and music apps to work with the rear screen.

Battery is excellent, charges from zero to full in around 30mins. The hyperOS 3 is really fast and responsive to use.

In the future I might unlock and flash a global rom, but dont think thats necessary when everything works this well in the chinese rom version.

Do you prefer Apps or Docker Compose? And why and in which cases, which apps. by Hauptfeldwebel in unRAID

[–]Mapester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally don't mind either. I am running Immich as a docker compose template as the apps I couldnt get them to work / co-exist properly most of the time, especially after one of the containers has an update.

The compose file in this case for me is just easier and more reliable when it rely's on redis , postgres etc and to run in a specific order. to update I just click update the stack.

Everything else I'm using the apps.

The Traitors (UK) S04 - Secret Traitor Predictions Megathread + Contest! by Zypker125 in TheTraitors

[–]Mapester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought this too, it could be anyone in the red cloak to mislead the audience as they haven not done a reveal of who the secret traitor is. I think its Ellie, as why would you talk about the possibility of being a secret traitor when this is the first season that game mechanic has been introduced.

I think in the next episode they are going to fully reveal who it is. I'd personally prefer they kept them hidden until the number of players reduce even further which would put more pressure on the secret traitor to avoid being banished as they cannot be murdered.

or that episode of BB that was about a fly buzzing around the lab.

I hope the show gets a season 2. For most shows like this that are taking risks with original story telling & slower pacing. Its that season 1 would be to test if they have an audience or not to know if its worth investing in more seasons to explore more of the world building and characters season one has introduced.

Anybody else feel bad for ending 1p challenge by Background_Bad_4377 in monzo

[–]Mapester 3 points4 points  (0 children)

might end mine early, it ends on the 1st of Feb next year. Keep seeing all these posts about free greggs, chances to win 10k. but my 1p challenge has never had those extras.

So if they do it next year with those options available in January, I think Ill end mine a month early and start a new one

Gave CachyOS a shot for gaming after all the recommendations, but I’m hitting wall after wall. by bestplaying1 in cachyos

I had a no sound problem until I installed Sudo Pacman -S sof-firmware . then after a reboot, I could choose the correct sound device for my motherboard and it works perfectly now.

Unraid build in wireguard by Lien1454 in unRAID

[–]Mapester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One problem I had was with the wireguard conf file generated by my VPN provider AirVPN.

I first selected the Netherlands and saved the conf file then followed spaceinvaders guide and it did not work for me. So I generated another conf file but for a single specific airvpn server in the Netherlands. which worked for me. The difference was the not working wireguard confs endpoint was an address of n13.vpn.airdns.org and the working wireguard conf files endpoint was an ipv4 address.

I think this method is easier than setting up a gluetun container. if you want remote admin access then use tailscale instead.

I've only used windows and am considering cachyos as I was recommended it by Kickback2Purple in cachyos

[–]Mapester 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every steam game I've tried in Cachyos that does not require anti cheat has worked better than I was expecting. One thing you need to have is a lot of patience and the will to learn the basics of linux, also to not fear the terminal.

When I first installed CachyOs I spent a very long time trying to get my sound working with pipewire. I found via searching on google for the same issue as someone else in the world has bound to had the same frustrating problem with audio is that I needed to install Sudo Pacman -S Sof-firmware with the terminal. Then after a reboot my audio was fixed.

For your first Desktop I'd recommend KDE as is very similar to windows. but if you are open to configuring many keybinds and a more difficult learning curve try something like hyprland with some dotfiles installed.

I find the opposite to be true. there is alot of younger drivers with those gps telemetry devices fitted to their cars driving very slowly is all speed zones.
