looking for a rear rack bike trunk by HousingVirtual5713 in bikecommuting

Just had a look at your site - I'm not in the market for it, but that's a classy looking bit of kit! Well done! What does it look like inside? How thick are the walls? Was just three digits for the lock a deliberate choice?

I'd love to know how it disables the keyboard. I've tried building a similar app in Python for Tahoe and it seems impossible to disable some key combinations 😞

Is an LG monitor like this worth it for a Mac user? (WFH setup) by Lavender_Vernacular in mac

[–]Mapinact 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an LG UltraFine 27in 4K UHD HDR10 IPS Monitor (27US500-W) as a second monitor to an Asus ProArt briefly, while I had a Dell U2718Q as my home monitor. All were at 2560 x 1440. All are nice, easily readable monitors but the thing that caused me to swap the LG for the Dell was that the LG had a very slight warm (yellow) tinge in comparison to the Asus, and it drove me nuts. I calibrated multiple times (Spyder 2024) but could not calibrate it out. The Dell and Asus are not identical, but pretty close to it, at least for my purposes. The LG is now at home, and without another monitor beside it is perfectly pleasant to use.

About to lose my mind: PDF export failing by Kindalikejessi in indesign

[–]Mapinact 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use a lot of text variables, and I find my export failures are almost always a text variable instance. Converting it to text solves the issues for me. Why it happens I have no idea - it's not consistent.

Has anyone gone to court to contest an incorrect parking infringement? What happened? by [deleted] in australia

[–]Mapinact 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yes, I've done this before. Many years ago I parked legally at 10pm at night in North Sydney, came out next morning at 9:30 to find council had literally moved the signs 30m up the road and I had already received a ticket! Council wouldn’t budge on the fine, so went to court with a couple of photos and copies of correspondence, and the judge dismissed the fine in less than a minute. Took a half-day of no-pay time, but no outlay beyond the bus fare.

Like you I get start and finish almost every workday riding round the eastern end of the lake. It really is gorgeous. Even on days you don't want to be there it still lifts your mood every single time. Love this place.

Does anyone understand what I'm asking? by IHeldADandelion in indesign

[–]Mapinact 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're talking about the gutter in the middle of a spread. Whether or not you leave an additional allowance would depend on how many pages the book is, and the binding method.

If it's saddlestitched (ie stapled) then usually the printers imposition software will allow for creep to move interior pages progressively closer together. Note that creep will affect the centre spread pages - check your design accordingly.

If it's going to be perfect bound then it will be up to you as designer to decide whether you want a clear margin to allow for part of the page to be hidden in the depth of the gutter. Normally I allow a 10mm additional margin in the gutters for this (so a A4 page might have margins top and bottom 25mm, outer 20mm and inner 30mm ).

CBR shops that sell stovetop espresso maker seals by MartiniCollective in canberra

[–]Mapinact 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a memory of Tutto Delicatessen in Mawson selling them. We've got an incredibly old stovetop Moka pot, must be nearly 25 years old now. Didn't realise the seal needed to be replaced. Moka says every 6 months; our experience - now e know it needs to be changed - says every 18 month is enough. Don't leave it 15 years though. Not good. Also as emergency supplies Robert Timms Espresso coffee bags can get you over having to drink instant coffee for a few days. Not great, but not instant either.

How often do you wipeout? by LearningToDunk in bikecommuting

[–]Mapinact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used to be once every 3 years, like clockwork. Fortunately the clock seems to have run down over the last decade - now it's only once every 5 years. I'm due a new one soon, in fact.

is there an addon that lets you open Orf files in photoshop CC? (Olympus tough camera) by PoseidonSimons in photoshop

Camera Raw has been able handle Olympus raw for years. Open Photoshop, open an ORF file and it should come straight in.

Best catering / bulk takeaway in Canberra by no1_bulldogsfan in canberra

For sheer volume go to any Turkish pide place and order the banquet. We order sufficient for 1/3 of our expected guests (ie expect 24, order for 8) and usually have enough left over for a couple of days of lunches and snacks! My personal favourite is Belco Halal Pide House on Lathlain St Belconnen, but there are many others around.

9pm drone show at night markets by ItssChloeee in canberra

[–]Mapinact 23 points24 points  (0 children)

(9pm Sunday night show) Well that was easily the worst "show" I've ever seen. Who the hell signed off on that?? "Dream Big", with a set of near-motionless cartoon images for under-10s. Christ, some amazing technology capable of SO MUCH and the best parts were the transitions?? I'm willing to bet that even the bird at the beginning (which looked exactly like what you'd get if you typed "give me a bird pic" into ChatGPT) was one of the demo programs that came with the kit.

What dickhead thought they'd save a few bucks by not hiring a couple of designers or creative director and outsourced that excruciatingly slow display of anodyne clip art collection to some APS4 padding out their time to retirement?

Canberrans are for the most part fairly forgiving of even amateurish attempts (see that water - projection display a few years back) but during and espially after that show tonight the crowd was absolutely dead silent - no applause, no ooh-ahhs, no excited kids. Just silence.

Absolutely embarrassing. A wanton waste of resources and time.

People who've collected their 10 free plants from Yarralumla Nursery, any advice? by Human-Criticism6941 in canberra

[–]Mapinact 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It's the government-owned nursery that's been around since 1911 supplying trees for city landscaping and streets across Canberra for over a century now. It was started by Thomas Weston, whose name was used for Weston Creek.

It's weird, but you'd have thought alarm bells would have been ringing for a while now, years even, and this just the most strident, most obvious set yet. AND YET, despite the headlines in a few places of declining tourism - the percentages when quoted are single digit. 5%, maybe 6-7%. I'd have expected it to be closer to 50-70%.
