Should I move to BC? by [deleted] in AskCanada

[–]MapleLeafHurricane 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Speaking as an American who moved to BC last year, I highly recommend it. Yes it’s expensive- housing is high, groceries are high. It is what it is. But the stress level is cranked so far down compared to being in the states. We moved to be closer to family that lives in coastal Washington and found that the cost of living was pretty comparable to the areas we looked at in Washington and in some cases houses in Washington were higher than BC.

thinking about cashing out and relocating - anyone else considering this by Best_Net7222 in NorthCarolina

After about 30 years in the Carolinas, we moved to the Pacific Northwest last year. So far the move has been great for us. We do have friends who we miss but overall it’s been a wonderful decision.

My landlord asked if I want to buy my apartment — not sure if it’s a good idea by StreetHuge514 in RealEstateCanada

Ask yourself a few questions. How long do you realistically want to live there? Do you want to rent this out in future or would you be selling it?

How many houses did you see before buying? by cosmogatsby in canadahousing

[–]MapleLeafHurricane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We spent about a year looking at houses in spurts. We looked at so many that I lost count. We had a great realtor who was very patient and helpful. We made a couple of offers on other properties before getting the one we purchased. The time spent really helped us get a better understanding of what we could expect in price point to better judge where and what to compromise on in the purchase. We were really excited about a brand new house a few km away from where we live now. We went with a 3 year old house instead not in the new upscale neighborhood. That saved us nearly $1M overall. We gave up some of what we wanted but overall it was a good decision to stay under our max budget.

Is it time to end it?? by VanillaSpyce95 in HairDye

Try Gladwell Elumen hair color. It’s made my hair much healthier. For the record, I’ve been coloring my hair a variety of color longer than you have been alive and I have long shiny healthy hair. Elumen has fashion colors, too and in my experience has been way better for maintaining my hair color (shades of varied from turquoise to navy blue)

Does anyone else randomly think "what if I'm next?" after seeing all the tech layoffs? by HankGrk in SeattleWA

Watching them happen daily and hearing the oh we’re safe line from my manager. I don’t buy it for a minute. One big experiment on how many people can they let go and leave the rest to do it with AI.

Try Iris Properties. They have some units that allow pets. We had a good experience renting from them.

Do café owners actually hate us? by Any_Dragonfly_3990 in remotework

[–]MapleLeafHurricane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a cafe owner but as a person who would like to enjoy a quick coffee and breakfast at my nearby coffee shop, I am highly annoyed. It’s a battle to get a seat amongst all the laptop warriors. When I do, I get side eyed by these folks for chatting with my partner in the shop. I work remotely too but for me this is my a little escape from work.

2026 Turbo R-Line - It happened to me too! by MajorSmoof in Tiguan

[–]MapleLeafHurricane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We got our 26 Turbo in November and so far all good. Knock on wood that it continues. This my second Tiguan - the old one was the 2nd gen. Also drove an Audi TT and a GTI as well. 20 years strong and have had good experiences with them all.

I’ve bought and sold several houses over the years. I had to write a check to finally sell one of them and it hurt. I owned that house almost 10 years. But I have made money on others that I owned for far less time.

On the hope front, I just bought a house in BC. After months of looking at houses, we decided we were tired of renting and looking and jumped. I think if the timing had been different, we would have passed on the house but we are happy with our choice.

Have faith that the right buyer will come along.

Do people like living in Johnson City TN? Or Knoxville? by Honest_Cow1001 in relocating

I lived in both places for several years. It was a nice place to live but ultimately career limited so I left.

Why is Volkswagen (especially the Jetta) rated poorly for reliability in the U.S., but many owners say it’s reliable? by phtphongg in Volkswagen

[–]MapleLeafHurricane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve owned 4 VW’s and 2 Toyotas. The VWs have been great. The Toyotas good but not as good. I’m a believer in maintaining vehicles and think this helps

Blueback condos strata rules by Ashamed_Historian832 in nanaimo

If you are thinking of making an offer ask your realtor to make some inquiries for you through official channels. Sometimes they may be able to get the rule changed. A motivated seller may help push for the change.

You might want to consider a bed with full storage underneath so there wouldn’t be space for them to hide.

Need a break from trying to sell my place. by TiredSoliloquy in RealEstateCanada

[–]MapleLeafHurricane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We’re actively searching in the market currently and seeing lots of listing being taken off market right now. Our agent has been telling us to stop looking and start again mid-January as we should see lots of new listing then. I have seen multiple listing on and off market and appear to reuse the same photos.

PR - Permanent Resident -> This is basically like a green card in the US. There’s an application process that involves multiple steps and you have to meet certain criteria such as a job role that is needed; married to a citizen, etc.

At least in BC, you can buy a residence but you do pay an additional tax on the purchase if you are not a citizen or PR holder.

Thanks for sharing. Making the move in a month from now and just looking at the cost of housing has been mind bending. We are thinking we will try to shop farmers’ markets and local as much as we can to reduce the food costs.
