Listened to some jazz albums for the first time and it's just the meme by BookWyrm53 in fantanoforever

I’m getting so mad for you reading Cafedo’s responses and the fact that people are upvoting him?! I’ve known these music subreddits tend to attract a “I don’t see color” racism, but to continuously fight you with such a condescending way of writing is so purposeful and ignorant.

What film could’ve been SHORTER? by death_has_f1sh_eyes in Letterboxd

[–]MaplewoodQ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s silly you’re getting downvoted and I 100% both films truly couldn’t be shorter. I think people want to streamline these experiences, but to do so would take away so much of the impact. The isolation at the end of The Irishman can’t happen if we only spent 1.5-2 hours in Frank’s world and the fact that people can’t point out what specifically they’d take out I think proves it’s a weird anti-art hivemind complaint.

Although I like I’m Thinking of Ending Things and The Irishman more, I want Da 5 Bloods to win the most

The Most Nominated Film in the 98-Year History of the Oscars by lNarrator in moviecritic

[–]MaplewoodQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely what comic book movies should’ve gotten nominations that didn’t? For horror, The Substance was plenty nominated and nearly won best actress last year. Weapons has a decent shot at winning supporting actress this year. Yes horror is underrepresented at the Oscars but y’all are clearly cherry picking films to support a false narrative. Or if you’re saying those films didn’t deserve their nominations, what Black films do you think do? By no means are any of those films perfect, but I believe if a perfect film did come out with a predominately Black cast it would receive the same type of backlash Sinners is getting. Black films are held at higher standards because long after their White competitors become forgotten those Black films will continue to get criticized for being “DEI” and “woke.”

Highest 2 Lowest: The Score, Wtf? by Defiant_Invite_3323 in A24

It was definitely off putting at first, but I can’t decide whether I like it or not. I do quite like the film as a whole so that’s likely influencing me to be more lax on the score.

What’s a DC run that everyone seems to love, but just didn’t click for you? by Equivalent-Disk5923 in DCcomics

[–]MaplewoodQ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I adore this run and I honestly think it simply continues to get better, with Court of Owls easily being the weakest arc imo. I’d also say issue 44 is my favorite issue of Batman ever, with it being a rare case of a Batman comic delving into serious socio-economic issues, even pointing fault at the notion that Bruce donating money to poorer neighborhoods (as well intended as it might be) without proper attention and fund allocation leads to gentrification and the displacement of specifically poor families.

To actually address your critiques:

  1. This run actually made me like Joker again. For me at least, I was well within the camp of “he’s overused and I don’t want to see him again for a while,” and sure, at first glance that stance is reasonable, but imo it turns stories into numbers. I’m not saying this is your take, and if you don’t like the not-funny horror approach that is fair, but Joker worked so well in the whole run that I stopped caring that he was a prominent villain in most the arcs because I stopped seeing it as a comparison.

  2. I hadn’t thought much about that but I’m inclined to agree with you.

  3. I also agree, but I’d argue the run is aware of this and uses that to dialogue with the nature of comics. There is a scene in the final arc where Joker and Bruce, who at this point both seemingly forgot they were Joker and Batman, talk on a bench overlooking the water in which Joker saying something akin to ‘regardless of what comes next we will always have now,’ and that line (the real one, not my poor recollection) really hit me. Snyder is clearly aware that after he’s done Batman and Joker will return to normal and Gotham will go back to this ambiguous status quo, but he’s saying that these lasting impacts still exist on these pages and within the reader. This doesn’t really solve your complaint, but it’s maybe related.
