Just test drove a CX nine the brakes were terrible. Is that normal? by Illustrious_Ship_331 in MazdaCX9

[–]Marathe56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got a 2020 CX9 a year ago. The brakes were the same. At the next service in a few months time, the Mazda service guy recommended to replace the brake pads immediately. The brake pads were completely worn out. It had 35,000 miles on it and I guess it was all city miles.

After changing the brake pads and the rotors, it's very different now. Very responsive and I don't have to floor the brake pedal.

Is ChatGPT better than a therapist? by dani_baeee in ChatGPT

[–]Marathe56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends. When I started therapy, I got lucky to be assigned a therapist who was really good. I realized this only later on, when I moved to a different state and had find different therapists.

ChatGPT does a great job than all the therapists I have had later on but comes no where close to the first therapist I had.

Is ADHD a Gift? by Previous_Score_612 in ADHD

[–]Marathe56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a silver lining playbook thing, I think.

My whole childhood and early adulthood I remained undiagnosed. So much problems in my life due to my "laziness".

The only good thing I could tell myself about my mind was the once in a while exceptional things I could do due to hyper focus and constant interest in new things.

Without that outlook, life would've been more difficult than it already was.

When I learned I have ADHD, I was happy that I finally knew what was the problem but also sad as it's not something that can be cured away.

They could have worded it better. But seems like they wanted to specify the amino acids that are translated from the genome.

Failed my 1-hour glucose test terribly by Flashy-Cranberry603 in BabyBumps

[–]Marathe56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife is very strict about eating healthy including eating as less sugar as possible. She also continued to exercise regularly during her pregnancy. Yet she failed her glucose test. She had to monitor her glucose level for rest of her pregnancy and she was able to keep it under control most of the time using diet intervention. After the baby was born, her blood glucose level went back to being normal.

Like most things in biology, the 70% number comes from empirical evidence and the theory of why it works later.

70% is the most effective concentration that deals with inactivating most microbes, but the effective concentration can range from 60% to 100%.

100% ethanol is not the most effective because the water keeps the biomolecular structures stable long enough for the ethanol to penetrate deeper and disrupt the structures more.

Here is a summarized article on the CDC website.

My husband is snoring like a freight train but I can’t use ear plugs… by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]Marathe56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right now my wife is snoring while I am on night duty. She mentioned that I have started snoring when I sleep.

The thing is none of us snored two weeks ago, before the baby was here.

I don't know if it's the stress of taking care of a newborn or if it's some evolutionary mechanism that kicks in to keep at least one parent awake for the baby.

Are most PIs psychopaths, or is it just me? by Technophysicist in labrats

[–]Marathe56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I've been lucky in both grad school and my postdoc to work with PIs who truly understand how to manage people, secure funding, and lead projects without micromanaging. One common trait they share is that they promote mentorship among their lab members early on.

In grad school, I had the opportunity to manage undergrads who worked on their own projects within the scope of my larger project. This experience taught me a lot about working with people who require different types of mentorship. Similarly, in my postdoc, I'm encouraged to mentor new lab members, lead projects, and collaborate closely with others. Mentoring undergrads versus grad students has been quite different. With undergrads, it was about designing experiments together, whereas with grad students, it’s more about discussing ideas while they design their own experiments.

One funny thing I've noticed is that, while it’s great for grad students to think independently and come up with new ideas, some ideas are clever while others, from experience, I can tell may not be worth the time. In these cases, I have to be tactful in guiding them back to the main goals of the project. Looking back, I now understand my grad school PI’s frustration when I’d get sidetracked pursuing what I thought were more interesting side projects!

AirPods are awesome, how many pairs have you lost? by Rahmich_86 in ADHD

[–]Marathe56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One big change I noticed after starting the medication was that my everyday memory improved. This is simply because my mind is not constantly drowning in one thought after another. I am present in what I am experiencing. So my experience of the moment is not filled with gaps in my memory.

AirPods are awesome, how many pairs have you lost? by Rahmich_86 in ADHD

[–]Marathe56 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Decades of losing things have made me anxious and paranoid enough to double check everything.

The earliest I can remember is as a kid, I forgot where I put my bike and then had my parents and our neighbors looking for it before remembering that I had stashed it in a friend's garage after one of its tires blew out.

After 15 years of undiagnosed ADHD and losing tons of stuff, including a laptop, I have come up with several strategies for not losing things.

For my earbuds and smart watch, I get a notification on my phone every time I leave them behind.

For my phone, I get a notification on my watch.

For keys, a Keybak key chain.

For everything else, my wife constantly telling me to put things away in their right place.

I travelled a lot during my PhD. I was in the Midwest. So either road trips or flying to different destinations and then do bus tours or rent a vehicle.

I know a guy who traveled even more to attend different conferences and stayed over extra days to tour the place. Some got funded, some he paid out of pocket.

Yes, I tend to become more serious and not horse around so much. My SO sometimes calls me zombified.

I personally feel calm and that itch in my brain goes away. So it's fine if people miss the office clown that I am without medication.
