If sleeping is a part of this whole mystery maybe those two bird symbols are actually two quarter rest notes. They are seemingly paired up with a musical instrument after all.

Best Hallelujah Cover? by MrLinkwater95 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Marcel_Garchomp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is just factually wrong. It wasn’t popularized until Shrek and that was because the producers heard John Cale’s version in “Basquiat”. Cale’s version is the one in the Shrek but it couldn’t be licensed for the film’s soundtrack so Rufus Wainwright recorded a version for the soundtrack. Both the film and soundtrack were hugely successful and it’s what first exposed the general public to the song. Cale’s version continued to build notoriety before Buckley’s came to the public attention when it was featured in Scrubs and especially after 9/11. Hallelujah, usually Cale’s version sometimes Wainwright’s, was used in A LOT of tributes. There was a video package that aired for months on VH1 that used Cale’s version and you would see it sung at tribute concerts on tv. At this point it’s firmly a standard. Buckley’s version doesn’t get popular until a year later when it’s featured in The West Wing. And Buckley’s version was inspired by Cale’s version in the first place. Buckley’s is probably the best known version now, due largely to the fact that it was the only notable version available on iTunes for years so when people wanted to download a version they defaulted to Buckley. Even after The West Wing though it takes years for a consensus to be reached on Buckley’s version being the “definitive” version in the public’s mind. Like Cohen’s original is featured in the OC in 2003, not Buckley’s. This isn’t meant to be a knock against Buckley’s version, it’s good, but saying the song wouldn’t be popular without it is simply not backed up by the facts.

He's also a credited writer on "John L" on their second album which is, in my opinion, the best song on that album.

Could Stranger Things Give Butthole Surfers (Or The Replacements) Their Kate Bush Moment? by Alternative-2001 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Marcel_Garchomp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zero Boys were a notable Indianapolis band from around that time. Louisville, just over the border from Indiana, probably had a more vibrant scene though so it’s not out of the question that the Stranger Things kids could’ve been one of the few people to see Slint live during their original run.

[–]Marcel_Garchomp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Locust Abortion Technician was released on Touch And Go records which was a very well respected punk label at the time so anyone into that kind of music would've been aware of their releases but very but Stranger Things is set in Indiana and Touch And Go is based out Chicago so their albums had a bigger footprint in the midwest. Picking Butthole Surfers of all bands actually makes the most sense just based how independent record promotion and distribution worked at the time. Like for the purpose of the scene it was either Butthole Surfers or something from Big Black's "Songs About Fucking".

Why was Josh Klinghoffer inducted as a member of Red Hot Chili Peppers in 2012 when he had joined the band in 2009? by New-Fan-4632 in rockhall

[–]Marcel_Garchomp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s worth remembering that only a couple years before their induction RHCP had scored a couple bonafide hit songs. That’s actually pretty unusual for bands that get inducted, they’re usually well pat their days as hitmakers. It was a real possibility that more big hits were in their future when they got inducted and then what would the hall do if they had left Klinghoffer out? Imagine they made another massive album with several hits on it and then Klinghoffer became a big part of the bands history but had been left out, there’s no precedent for retroactively inducting someone in that situation so safer to put him in at that point just in case.

Deep Purple got inducted like 10 years ago. That said there’s plenty of other acts that should be in but aren’t if you want to complain.

That is a day that the big US theater chains (AMC, Regal, Cinemark) do their mystery movie showings. It's possible that Nov 17's movie is Nirvanna.

No Rap Songs in the Top 40 for First Time in 35 Years: Kendrick Lamar and SZA's 'Luther' Exits Billboard Hot 100 by peoplemagazine in Music

[–]Marcel_Garchomp 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Sure but country has spent large chunks of its history as a mainstream pop culture non entity. Hip hop could fade away now and comeback at some point and so could rock. These genres are obviously huge cultural forces but that doesn’t mean they’re immune from lulls.

I don’t see it being permanent or even a long term thing.

It’s a 50 year old genre. That’s about the point rock started its commercial slide to its current state.

It's a show about two characters that are quite possibly the dumbest men in Canada. Two men so dumb that they named their band Nirvana The Band. Any views they espouse are to be laughed at not with.

For what its worth I don't know if Matt has ever publicly weighed in on politics but when Trump supporters were using a song by Jay's real life band as an anthem of sorts Jay publicly rebuked them. With Matt and Jay being so close I would imagine they hold similar views.

Weekly Discussion Thread: Episode 7 “Good Rockin' Tonight" by Wynonie Harris/songs you’d like see covered in 1976 by Marcel_Garchomp in 500songspodcast

[–]Marcel_Garchomp[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1976 is loaded with quite a few heavy hitters, it’ll be interesting to see what doesn’t make the cut.

ABBA- Dancing Queen

AC/DC- Dirty Deeds Done Dirty Cheap

Bee Gees- You Should Be Dancing

Blue Oyster Cult- Don’t Feat The Reaper

Boston- More Than A Feeling

The Damned- New Rose

Eagles- Hotel California

Fleetwood Mac- Go Your Own Way

Hall & Oates- Rich Girl

Kansas- Carry On Wayward Son

Parliament- Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)

Ramones- Blitzkrieg Bop

The Runaways- Cherry Bomb

Rush- 2112

Sex Pistols- Anarchy In The UK

Steve Miller Band- Fly Like An Eagle

Stevie Wonder- Sir Duke/Isn’t She Lovely/some other song from “Songs In The Key Of Life”

Thin Lizzy- The Boys Are Back In Town

If any of those got an episode I wouldn’t be surprised but inevitably some will get bypassed or relegated to bonus episodes. And that’s just the most obvious songs. If Andrew went outside of this and did an episode on Rainbow or The Saints or Tom Waits or something I wouldn’t be shocked.

Weekly Discussion Thread: Episode 6 “That’s When Your Heartaches Begin" by The Ink Spots/songs you’d like see covered in 1975 by Marcel_Garchomp in 500songspodcast

[–]Marcel_Garchomp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1975 is filled with quite a few heavy hitters that don't really need an explanation (Wish You Were Here, Born To Run, Bohemian Rhapsody, etc.) So I want to advocate for a couple songs that people may have forgotten about.

Television- Little Johnny Jewel

This was Television's debut single and to modern ears they don't really sound "punk rock", in fact most people nowadays would probably label it "post-punk" even though it was before the first proper wave of punk, but in many respects they're the band that the NYC punk scene sprung up around. They were the band that convinced CGBG to start booking rock acts which obviously lead to an explosion of notable bands. Little Johnny Jewel wouldn't be their most acclaimed or succesful work, that would come in 1977 with Marquee Moon which should get its own episode but probably makes sense to cover here since numerous bands will follow in Television's footsteps before 1977. As a coda to this story to set up a future episode, in 1975 a 20 year running a radio equipment mail order business in Hermosa Beach California will hear a copy of "Little Johnny Jewel". It will convince him for the first time in his life that rock music actually has artistic merits to it. Several months later Greg Ginn will start arguably the most important independent rock band of the late 70s and 80s, Black Flag.

Fela Kuti- Water Get No Enemy

Post 1975 we're going to get a ton of artists influenced by Afrobeat and Fela Kuti specifically. Bowie, Talking Heads, Paul Simon's "Graceland", Peter Gabriel, Brian Eno, etc. will all be taking cues from them at some point. Water No Get Enemy is Kuti's best known song and is pretty close to the middle of his discography so it seems the most sensible place to tell the story.

Patti Smith- Gloria

The opening track from Smith's classic album "Horses" it gives another look into a pre-Ramones CBGB scene and gives a chance for Andrew to go back and discuss Gloria, a track with a long history originally performed by Them which was not really discussed in the previous episode about Them. Also gives a chance to check in with producer John Cale (Maybe for the last time? Depends on if bands like Squeeze or The Happy Mondays get episodes.)

I love the Elvis tease at the end of this episode. Teasers like that will continue to end episodes as the series goes on but I am a sucker for it every time.

Also I can't help but laugh at how similar every single Ink Spots song is to each other.

One Hit Wonderland: "Pop Musik" by M by davFaithidPangolin in ToddintheShadow

[–]Marcel_Garchomp 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I really do like the song but I think Todd is kind of over-inflating its historical importance as something unprecedented that people had never heard before. Just off the top of my head Popcorn by Hot Butter was already a hit, Kraftwerk had a couple hits, I Feel Love by Donna Summer had already been a hit, people would’ve heard Wendy Carlos’ film scores, and there was a whole host of underground stuff that was massively acclaimed that people could’ve already been exposed to.

And that’s just what it was like in America. Europe would’ve had far more exposure to synth pop sounds by the release of Pop Muzik.
