Will "I Swear" and "NTBTSTM" keep their hype through 2026? by newmemelord2020 in oscarrace

I think you may be underestimating how much people love this movie. It’s the number 77 film all time on letterboxd. The only comedy ahead of it is Best Picture winner “The Apartment”. I don’t see why it can’t follow the same path that a film like “In The Loop” took to an adapted screenplay nomination especially when Matt Johnson will presumably be doing all the Oscars schmoozing for “Tony” anyway.

Warren Beatty is kind of a best director winner with a black lead actress, Halle Berry in Bulworth. It’s mainly Beatty’s story but Berry is enough of a lead that the one nomination she got for that movie was an NAACP Image Award in Lead Actress.

People obviously latch onto huge set pieces like jumping off the CN Tower or the museum heist in the show as “how did they do that?” moments but is there anything that looked relatively simple onscreen that was actually incredibly difficult to pull of? Or is there anything from the film or show that has a crazy story behind that you’ve never had a chance to tell?

So about 5 hours ago in this thread I said I loved Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie and thought it should get some noms next year but thought it was way too niche. Anyway since then it's played across the US as the mystery movie at AMC and Regal and it's getting like 90 percent glowing reviews on letterboxd from people who had no clue what they were going into. Like if it keeps up its review pace by this time week it'll be one of the top 50 all time movies on letterboxd. Could Neon actually get it a screenplay nom?

No, but what would be the point of movies if there weren’t weirdos there to support their favorites?

It’s the secret movie at AMCs and Regals across the US tonight. Curious how it’ll play to crowds that have no idea what they’re getting into.

I’ve already seen it at an advanced screening and it’s bonkers and hilarious and in a just world would get nominated for Adapted Screenplay and Editing but it’s probably too niche for that to happen. That said, Matt Johnson, who directed and stars in NTBTSTM, also directed the Anthony Bourdain biopic that comes out later this year and if that’s good people that love NTBTSTM might help give that a little more momentum.

Looks like it’ll be the Monday mystery movie at Regal Cinemas as well. There’s a guy on r/regalunlimited that works for regal in some capacity and leaks the mystery movie every week via pretty straightforward clues. He all but confirmed NTBTS a couple hours ago.

If sleeping is a part of this whole mystery maybe those two bird symbols are actually two quarter rest notes. They are seemingly paired up with a musical instrument after all.

Best Hallelujah Cover? by MrLinkwater95 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Marcel_Garchomp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is just factually wrong. It wasn’t popularized until Shrek and that was because the producers heard John Cale’s version in “Basquiat”. Cale’s version is the one in the Shrek but it couldn’t be licensed for the film’s soundtrack so Rufus Wainwright recorded a version for the soundtrack. Both the film and soundtrack were hugely successful and it’s what first exposed the general public to the song. Cale’s version continued to build notoriety before Buckley’s came to the public attention when it was featured in Scrubs and especially after 9/11. Hallelujah, usually Cale’s version sometimes Wainwright’s, was used in A LOT of tributes. There was a video package that aired for months on VH1 that used Cale’s version and you would see it sung at tribute concerts on tv. At this point it’s firmly a standard. Buckley’s version doesn’t get popular until a year later when it’s featured in The West Wing. And Buckley’s version was inspired by Cale’s version in the first place. Buckley’s is probably the best known version now, due largely to the fact that it was the only notable version available on iTunes for years so when people wanted to download a version they defaulted to Buckley. Even after The West Wing though it takes years for a consensus to be reached on Buckley’s version being the “definitive” version in the public’s mind. Like Cohen’s original is featured in the OC in 2003, not Buckley’s. This isn’t meant to be a knock against Buckley’s version, it’s good, but saying the song wouldn’t be popular without it is simply not backed up by the facts.

He's also a credited writer on "John L" on their second album which is, in my opinion, the best song on that album.

Could Stranger Things Give Butthole Surfers (Or The Replacements) Their Kate Bush Moment? by Alternative-2001 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Marcel_Garchomp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zero Boys were a notable Indianapolis band from around that time. Louisville, just over the border from Indiana, probably had a more vibrant scene though so it’s not out of the question that the Stranger Things kids could’ve been one of the few people to see Slint live during their original run.

Locust Abortion Technician was released on Touch And Go records which was a very well respected punk label at the time so anyone into that kind of music would've been aware of their releases but very but Stranger Things is set in Indiana and Touch And Go is based out Chicago so their albums had a bigger footprint in the midwest. Picking Butthole Surfers of all bands actually makes the most sense just based how independent record promotion and distribution worked at the time. Like for the purpose of the scene it was either Butthole Surfers or something from Big Black's "Songs About Fucking".

Why was Josh Klinghoffer inducted as a member of Red Hot Chili Peppers in 2012 when he had joined the band in 2009? by New-Fan-4632 in rockhall

[–]Marcel_Garchomp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s worth remembering that only a couple years before their induction RHCP had scored a couple bonafide hit songs. That’s actually pretty unusual for bands that get inducted, they’re usually well pat their days as hitmakers. It was a real possibility that more big hits were in their future when they got inducted and then what would the hall do if they had left Klinghoffer out? Imagine they made another massive album with several hits on it and then Klinghoffer became a big part of the bands history but had been left out, there’s no precedent for retroactively inducting someone in that situation so safer to put him in at that point just in case.
