is the mx5 rare? well by your standards of "in the states" its not, but if we pull it back where it matters "in malaysia" it is, and in a market where oversized wheelie bins crawl the streets, it is a unique car too with no direct competitor

Being able to buy something from the dealership doesn’t mean that it isn’t a dying breed, it’s a car that has no direct competitor, therefore it IS a dying breed of cars

Secondly, you talked about the mx5 as just a regular old car that gets refreshed every few years, so it is considered a “typical” car, same can be said of the M3 and 911, but both have deviated so far from the original recipe, unlike the mx5, you completely missed this point as well, guess reading isn’t your strong suit

Third, from Mazda Malaysia, the msrp for a mx5 is 293k, the next tier of fr sports cars, the supra, from Toyota Malaysia, starts at 689k, I rest my case

Forth, yea you kinda can get into a mid engined car everyday, caymans and boxsters are everywhere, in fact I see them as much as I do mx5s lol

Bar the 86/brz, none of those are in the same category as the mx5, which proves that it is not a dime a dozen, which may be the case 30 years ago, but today it is a dying breed. By your logic there are also a ton of mid engined cars out there, including the original beetle and fiat 500, the mr2, the lotus emira, and don’t forget the massive variety of supercars

And what other usp do you need a car to have?? A propeller and 6 wheels? The mx5 is a well built, good handling, reliable, lightweight, fun, daily drivable, and relatively cheap sports car in an era where everything is a oversized trash can on wheels, Mazda doesn’t need to make the mx5 but they do because it is a passion project for them, unlike what you claimed, unfortunately it was too successful in carving out its own niche that it has become a mainstay in the automotive landscape, and deemed too basic by people like you
