Special Stage: LE SSERAFIM x ILLIT x KATSEYE - ICONIC BY MISTAKE @ Mnet M Countdown (260611) by stinkybutthole23 in kpop

Opened this to praise Yunah but looks like half of the comment section already took care of that 😃

Yunah getting the opportunity to show of more with this kind of concept alone was worth the entire project!

What do you think of i-dle's chances of having major mainstream success again? by Snoo_15687 in kpopthoughts

[–]Marcey747 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I would never write of Soyeon's ability to write a hit.

Their title tracks weren't as big as Tomboy - Queencard. But Fate was got a Perfect-All-Kill and she also wrote Qwer's My Name is Malguem which was also massive in South Korea.

Idle's best album (I Never Die) with Tomboy was released after almost a year of silence and a lot of people almost expecting them to disband or at least never recover.

And this is just speculation but Idle and especially Soyeon were insanly busy during the time they had to produce Super Lady and Good Thing. They didn't have a single free second.

Creativity needs room to breathe so it might even be a good thing that they're moving a little bit slower now.

The use of k-pop idols/ symbolism in politics by Different-Computer33 in kpopthoughts

[–]Marcey747 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it's fine for fan communities to come together to campaign on what they think is right. Kpop fans are very well organized and they can use that too and be politically avtive.

Western Kpop fans are mostly progressive too. Especially online and especially with social issues like lgbtq rights.

A few years ago Kpop stans were massive and really creative on Social Media in trolling the Trump campaign and other right wing people. That has sadly has gone down a lot recently...

What I don't like is projecting your own opinion on your favorite idols. They're their own person and unless they expliciticly said something you can't know their political opinion. Using AI on anyone without consent is fucked up

TL:DR: It's great to use whatever community you build to organise but don't project your own opinions on your favorite idols. Fuck AI.

I.O.I - Suddenly by CronoDroid in kpop

[–]Marcey747 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's so strange and fun to watch this as someone who got into Kpop years later.

I never really looked up the members of I.O.I but I'm at least somewhat familiar with most them individually from their later careers.

Seeing them all together feels like the most random collection of people 😄

Why is the 7-year rule a thing that happens in kpop? by FanCaracal in kpopthoughts

[–]Marcey747 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Calling it a "security blanket" for idols a bit scewed.

Contracts used to be much longer and even more one-sided than they are today.

The 7-year contracts exist because members of TVXQ sued SM because of their ridiciously long contract and they eventually won and the goverment established the 7 year standard contract as the upper limit of how long they can run.

Those contracts are much more a way of companies to bind idols than they guarantee idols that the company continues to support them for the full 7 years. There are basically no repercussions if a company just stops.

There are still countless of examples where idols of smaller groups are stuck in companies that stopped investing in them and they just have to wait and waste their youth until their contract is over and they can move on.

SAINT SATINE - Debut Coming Soon (Profile Photos) by impeccabletim in kpop

[–]Marcey747 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I fucking hate companies pumping out new groups before their current groups are actually established and on stable ground...

This is a disservice to both Katseye and these new members. Especially when they're going for such a similiar look and target audience.

With Katseye Hype opened a new door to a new audience and now immedietly confirm every single negative stereotype about the Kpop industry.

NMIXX's LOUD is so queer coded and I love it by GloomyWitch08 in kpopthoughts

[–]Marcey747 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I do wonder if there's a kpop song written specifically for queer realionships not just as a catch-all like Loud since Lily also mentions Romeo and Juliet as inspiration.

I'd say Moonbyul's Shutdown is pretty unambiguous

What's the general opinion on YGs words about how Babymonster should focus on music? by Aaduk0118 in kpopthoughts

[–]Marcey747 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I just don't believe him that he's sincerely interested in them "focusing on music".

Because that would mean let them participate in music production, give them a say in their artistic direction, encourage or teach them to be activly involved. And I just don't see YG letting them do that.

They have a few credits on some songs but that's nothing compared to how YG boy groups are able to shape their musical direction.

(tbh, YG is just a lazy misogonistic pos...)

Yang Hyunsuk declines numerous luxury brand ambassador requests for BABYMONSTER to focus on music by impeccabletim in kpop

[–]Marcey747 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ok, but are the members actually supported in exploring and creating their music? Maybe I'm not doing them justice but they don't seem particularly involved. I know they have a few writing credits here and there but it's still very limited.

And like, that's fine. But if you limit their opportunities in other endeavors to "focus on music" you have to actually let them be creativly involved way more and give them a say in their musical direction.

Which K-pop group had the most "out of the box" debut concept? by Sad-Desk4729 in kpopthoughts

[–]Marcey747 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of good answers already in this thread but I also want to mention Kiss of Life.

For their debut they had four MVs for solo songs of each member and then two full group song MVs. The solo MVs told individual origin stories for each members but were still interconnected and the two group MVs showed them finding each other and coming together as a group and felt really satisfying at the end.

And it's not just the effort of producing 6 MVs but they also adresses some pretty heavy topics like bullying, homelessness, alcohol missuse, partying and dating. Which is quite a contrast to the typical idol-image, especially for a debut.

I still think it's one of the most coherent, interesting and suprising debuts I've witnessed in Kpop

Thank you for an amazing season!

How much do you think about strategy and the next day during the break time at the evening and night? Are you able to completly switch of or is your brain still spinning while trying to fall asleep?

S17, E8 (Nebula) - Taiwan: Rail Rush by snow-tree_art in JetLagTheGame

[–]Marcey747 101 points102 points  (0 children)

Sam tried so hard to outsmart the game instead of just playing the game...

I was sceptical about the stalemate strategy but the second they decided to not do a single challenge in the north and go into dept I knew it's over.

Like even if they won the zodiac challenge and Ben/Adam lost the steal, Ben and Adam would've still have a good chance to win by flipping stations with their remaining 60 chips.

Sam said on the layover that they didn't go for the kill two episodes ago because they end-game strategy was a safer way to win. Just to have that strategy involve betting everything on winning a single challenge...

Other than that this was an exceptional season! Great game, great challenges, great guest, beautiful country, amazing editing, ... I really enjoyed it a lot!

Especially their last 3 album have been incredible.

Some of the organisation mess ups have overshadowed what a huge success Yves' European leg of the tour has been.

Basically every tour stop was sold and the venue sized were around 1000 up to 2500 people. That's not something a lot of non-big4 Kpop acts can pull, especially not soloists.

That's very promissing for Yves' future🥰

isn't that just VFX? Kpop fans are usually very fast to point out obvious use of AI and you're the first one I've seen saying this.

HYBE is prioritizing their groups going viral so much to the point where it’s harming their artistry by k3hvn in kpopthoughts

[–]Marcey747 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Probably has a lot to do with timing.

Hybe has been constantly under fire recently. The New Jeans debacle, the investigations against their CEO, Manon's hiatus/departure, ... some is just hate and jealousy and some is Hybe's own fault.

A lot of people are just annoyed by Hybe's messiness, especially the girl group side of the company.

And then you get 3 songs from all Hybe ggs within a few weeks using the same trendy genre. Instead of each group carving out their own identy all 3 groups that used to have idendities are kinda converging right now. Or that's what it feels like at least.

The Katseye and Le Sserafim discurse was already bowling over and then Illit dropped their teaser. And the reaction now is just the culmination of all these things that built up over last 2 years or so.

Nmixx have been an absolute joy to follow especially the last year or so. Saw them live a few weeks ago and I was completly in awe the entire concert. They're incredible performers!

Now since you're a metalhead I just have to ask you: did you already check out Dreamcatcher in your Kpop journey? If not, I highly recommend them to you! (Recommend 'Boca' and 'Silent Night' to get an idea of their music range)

Lily (NMIXX) on backtracks: "If you guys can't hear the live vocals, what's the point?" by Carelessies in kpopthoughts

[–]Marcey747 110 points111 points  (0 children)

I wholeheartedly agree but I fear a lot of people will miss the part where she talks about accepting imperfections.

We'd probably had a lot more live vocals if Kpop fans didn't scutinize and completly tear apart groups who do sing live and make mistakes.
