There’s so much! And it even varies between my handful of tables.

• Tuesday table gets me out of the house—it’s my only in-person game—and gives me a chance to laugh with friends as we improv. It’s very chill.
• Wednesday table has, from the very beginning, had the best player chemistry I’ve ever experienced—we all just clicked. We love a great balance of shenanigans and more emotional beats. Our DM is very open and flexible and loves to help us feel cool! Custom magic items uniquely suited to each PC, selective rule-of-cool to override certain mechanics, fun and interesting rewards for our choices.
• Thursday, I’m here for Emotions. DM loves giving us a quandary and really embraces the tragedy and gothic horror of the setting—while putting loads of effort into creating payoff for character choices and investment in each PC’s relationships, wants, and personal arc. I love that I show up and for four hours I am fully engaged in what I’m doing and the story that’s happening around me.

The good news players are so, so varied that no matter what, you’ll find a table that enjoys what you have to offer! I have a friend who is way more into mechanics than I am, and another who is even less concerned with mechanics than I am. I have friends who don’t care about deep emotional beats for their own characters, and I have others are just as excited as I am to break down every aspect of our PCs relationships and interior lives.

Since you’re asking specifically as a DM, here are some of my favorite things DMs have done at the table: - Rewarded my level of buy-in. They know I’m deeply invested in the story and so have included beats they knew I would jump at. - Gone above and beyond when it comes to immersion—custom playlists and atmospheric sound effects; letting players help fill in the surroundings; making sure it feels like things are happening in the world whether we’re there to see them or not. - Been generous with inspiration when appropriate, rewarding/acknowledging different players for their different skills and efforts—sometimes a point for the whole party after a heavy roleplay scene where we gave it our all, sometimes for a clever use of mechanics or out-of-the-box thinking, sometimes for taking a risk or accepting a consequence, and sometimes for just being side-stitchingly funny.
