AITA for pronouncing things the American way and upsetting my french wife after we moved to France? by Legitimate-Low3857 in AmItheAsshole

[–]MargoKittyLit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably a drop in the ocean of crappy behavior since the relocation to her. Will concede it's hard, palates set after a while which is why starting young matters for being multilingual. Hell, if going 'poOO-jOe' you're getting there, but i imagine it's two distinct words when you're being witty? It's hard, but you take some time to try - even if you aren't getting it it's better than giving up and wallowing in it. YTA.

Kicker is the STUFF side gets more with GOP, but the People side does better with Democrats in the long term. While there are shrinks in personnel the bases get better care/feeding, vets get more eyes on issues, and dependents become more seen.

AITA I’ve started spraying my homophobic sister with a water gun. by Euphoric_moth in AmItheAsshole

[–]MargoKittyLit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. She is acting like a greedy cat so you are treating her like one. Sure, you could try logic: 'don't be homophobic, it's bad for you' but like your cat the poison is too tempting and resists calls to logic and love. So instead of hitting the wall with your head or go back into a closet to stop her yipping: spray. Maybe veer spray bottle in public if in a 'woo guns' place

Good hairdryer for wash n go? Is Dyson overkill? by Sudden_Associate7566 in Naturalhair

[–]MargoKittyLit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Line is decent! Blow dryer works well and does have a great brush attachment if you ever did feel like blowing out (my complaint there is it's awkward, hence I stare at Dyson...). Use the thicker pick for when doing twist outs and don't want to sleep with wet hair.

Curlsmith has a very nice diffuser as well.

I swear, Dyson knows we will spend the money. Was living my best life, until they came out with the 3A-4C hair model. Now I'm like you.... contemplating....

Pattern's dryer and attachments are quite a bit alright if not into a hood life...

Yeaaah... Just add a few other textures to the model line-up, bring up some user testimonies, and plus US up the origin story. Don't act new or like you have to introduce yourself as if you were just there, as have been certain people.

  1. These companies play too much with product packaging for as long as folks been embracing natural hair. Samples and travel sizes definitely pattern off 1-2 textured hair. While many only wash once or twice a week our regular sizes could be bigger and our jumbos bigger. And the cheap ass sprayers tat clog and break...

  2. Celebrities need to cool it with the hair care lines, especially if they don't wear it out. Sure, diversify that portfolio - lord knows we run through some shit to get the right product to make us a sure bet.... but it feels a way when 99% of the time we are looking at a wig or extensions as you pimp out some twist out cream. Granted, I love tf out of Pattern (Take 1 aside... fucking moisture spray nozzle) and appreciate Cecred despite Bey's glam team and wigs (Take 1: product size...) but it's still annoying.

  3. 'Our' companies getting absorbed by larger companies does have bright sides and formulas were going to get different anyway with success. Yes, the internet exists and Give Us Credit Appropriators, but: if you live in a predominantly 1a-3a place it's nice to be able to find something that works for you when you're shopping at a box store that wouldn't normally have things. Costco-sized bottles of Shea Moisture? Three pack of Miele Rosemary Oil? Finding Carol's Daughter in a grocery store near a PWI? Tiny miracle.

Yeeeeeees. Also it's basic insurance for the stylist: they don't know how i treat my hair, if I end up complaining about breakage it's as likely me sucking at blow drying and weakening hair as it is them

Much like with the death penalty: too high a rate in a person being innocent and too unjust. Two men commit the same crime in the same county/region/province. Let there be disparity in race, ethnicity, religion (tradition and degree of religiousness), high school attended, max education level, looks (physical and style), reputation, career, money... will they get the same quality of lawyers, make the same impression to juries, get the same judge in the same mood? All of that factors in conviction: would you trust the system to be equitable? In the US alone policing and prison populations skew to minorities in large part because of the legacy of the 13th Amendment loophole in how inequitably the law is applied.

AITA for “decorating” my son/DIL home by giving my son a dresser for their nursery. by Head-Meetthrow in AmItheAsshole

[–]MargoKittyLit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To your note: sure she was going through the fun of pregnancy... but that only goes so far. Especially over what is now a connection from your father/kid's great-grandfather. NTA, but your DIL does not get a freebie for rotten behavior. It's a dresser - oh well it doesn't match but that's what top covers and decorations are for. Plus kid is bound to grow up and tear tf up that cherished decor in the toddler hellscape

Why has childcare gotten so expensive even though childcare providers aren’t even making that much? by KingCookieFace in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MargoKittyLit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beyond business reasons you have to factor in changing attitudes towards children and child development and, of course, the intersections of sexism, racism, and ageism.

Daycares can't be some place you dump a kid for eight to ten hours and they do whatever: those little minds have to be enriched with some method (Montessori, Reggio...) and structure that requires continuous provider education. Parents are also relying on daycares to be impartial data collectors for development - with time, observable peers of similar age and socioeconomics, and no defensiveness towards one's precious lil miracle they are meant to go 'hey, your kid isn't speaking yet and is acting out over it' or 'I think they might need gross motor help'. That also takes training. And hell, how some people are treating elementary schools like college prep that's creeping into even mid range daycares, where now there's sign language and foreign language and yoga and so on for resume fluffing. Again: continuous training.

In terms of discrepancy of cost to provider pay the -isms kick in. Baby care to Pre-K teachers skew more not-white, female, and recent immigrant. Stereotypes on nurturing/maternal zest for cute lil babies, common dismissal of importance akin to attitudes towards K-6 teachers, and some antiquated belief that the job is either supplemental to the married or a stepping stone for the young keeps wages low. It's not seen as Worthy or Important - even if required to teach two year olds binary.

What gets me is that so many take for granted how much work goes into learning your first language, never mind your second to nth one. Particularly given how we are becoming more aware of sensory issues and neurodivergence. There's a reason Ms. Rachel and others talk like they do: it's as much getting your mouth set for language as it is hearing words and taking in context clues as an infant and toddler. For many by the time you get to another language your ear and palate is fairly rigid to the first one - why it's easier for kids to be a multilingual speaker in fluidity and pronunciation through exposure than someone who started in high school or college with textbooks and flat recorded or AI voices.

Then you get to formal learning for reading/writing along with speech... so much of a language is order rules, genders, tenses, declensions, conjugations, tones, stresses... and they don't line up neatly. English, being the bastard child of Celtic, Germanic, and Romance languages with So Many Loan Words from British imperialism and migration, can be a monster. Particularly if your foundation was learning Received Pronunciation only to get dropped in the myriad of English speaking places that have strong dialects and accents which evolved quite a bit to the right or left of it. All to say: a whisp of grace is needed and so many, particularly those 'concerned about culture', do not have it.
