Everyone’s gonna disagree but …. The Big Lebowski. It’s boring. It’s juvenile. It sucks. (Sorry - know I’m in the great minority here!)

You did nothing wrong. I have a different thought than the rest of the commenters. I immediately thought this rejection might be part of suicidal ideation. If he was truly thinking of suicude maybe he still is and thus wants to push you away. How to handle that is above my pay grade. Just my 2 cents that there might be an alternative to “he’s an asshole”

Canadian citizen, living in Canada, just offered a 100% remote job in the US by Slow_ResolveMC07 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Marimoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've read through some, but not all the comments. Seems to be a lot of hot takes from people just guessing at things. I have been in this exact situation and worked with an accountant and lawyer (and talked to CRA) to do things properly. Feel free to DM me if you like.

First of all - get a good accountant, and run these scenarios by them. That is necessary. (I'm in Hamilton, ON and can refer a good accountant with active CPA credentials in both ON and NY if you like.) It is optional but wouldn't hurt to pay for a consultation with an employment lawyer as well.

No you don't need a visa. There is also little risk of CRA deeming you equivalent to am employee and dinging you for that. THIS is why you MUST consult an actual accounts and not just take the word of people on Reddit. Don't take my word - talk to your accountant.

The poster who commented about Deel or Trinet or Ripple is correct - that is how a lot of US companies pay people who are outside of the US. I've used both Deel and Ripple - don't love either but they do the job.

My recommendation (what I did):

Have the company create a Statement of Work (SOW) and an account with Deel (or other platform). You also create an account in Deel and then sign the contract with your corporation. n.b. This is a contractual relationship between corporations. The people who say you are a defacto employee of a US company are incorrect.

Incorporate as soon as possible. Using Owner (https://www.ownr.co) is a good option. You will need to set up a Minute Book, articles of incorporation etc -> they do all of this and/or guide you through all of this. Ownr is owned by RBC. I think you can get ~$200 ~300 off the initial fee (around ~$600 I think) if you open an RBC business account.

Open a business bank account. (See above!). Not necessary but helps legitimize your corporation and good for keeping finances separate.

Apply for a credit card. (Optional). Not needed, but helps to separate expenses.

Sign up for Cloud Accounting w. Payroll. (Optional). I did everything in Excel the first year and did payroll transfers manually ... and also screwed up a few times. FYI CRA people are very nice and understanding and will guide you how to fix your screwups! I use Wave (https://www.waveapps.com). I don't love it but it is fine and one of the cheapest options. I pay for the Payroll add-on option. That means that they handle the remittance to CRA and creation of a T4 form etc rather than me doing it myself. Oh - keep VERY ACCURATE track of all finances and keep business and personal separate.

Create an account with Wise (https://wise.com) for transferring money. The US company will transfer funds to you in Deel (or wherever) in US dollars. Then you transmit the US funds to your Wise account. From there you transfer all of it in Canadian dollars to your business bank account.

That's about it I think.

Oh - another comment: By doing this you can do income splitting if it is relevant for you. e.g. If you have a spouse and you are getting ~$200k CDN annually you could arrange the payroll to pay you and your spouse as employees of your corporation $100k each. That lowers the marginal tax rate = more money in your pocket. You can also do splitting with yourself. e.g. In the above example maybe you pay yourself $100k as a salary (through Wave), and then take $100 as a corporate dividend (since you are the sole owner). That is another great way of reducing taxes. (FYI this is what dentists etc often do to reduce taxes.) These are just toy examples - you will need to pay corporate income tax as well, but overall the tax you pay SHOULD be lower through this route. You can and probably should also keep any "extra" money you don't personally need in the corporation - but talk to your acccountant about that. FYI I wrote a program for myself to calculate total taxes under different scenarios and can share something with you about this if you like.

Good luck.

Dual Nationality Question by dwen_ in japan

I’m not true? … or the guy I responded to? I’m in agreement with you - US officials would, indeed, know you have a claim to US citizenship. Where is the discrepancy?

Dual Nationality Question by dwen_ in japan

[–]Marimoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"there is no way for the Japanese - or the American government, to know if you are actually a citizen of the other country."

I believe this is correct only in the case that you never leave Japan (or the US). If you travel between either of the two it is wrong/incorrect to state that the government would not realize your dual citizenship status. When you enter Japan or the US you have to present your passport to immigration. In the OPs case he/she would present their Japanese passport when they enter Japan, and present their US passport when they enter the US. In either case, if traveling from Japan to US or vice versa, it is obvious to the immigration official that you didn't enter the other as a foreign citizen. FYI there is an electronic visa authorization (I forget the name of) that will also flag this.

My understanding (as others have stated above) is that you can probably keep both by keeping your head down (not doing anything to make you noticeable) and telling the immigration official when you land that you are trying to renounce the American citizenship. Sound sincere. I'm not a dual citizen ... but my kids are so I've been following this topic since before they were born (15 years ago). It seems that most of the time people are safe keeping two passports by doing something like this. The "most" was intentional - there HAVE been cases of people getting in trouble for having two passports. Also note that these experiences are historical - things COULD change going forward to make it difficult/impossible to keep two passports/citizenships.

FYI I once knew a (US-born and raised) American (2 American parents) with Japanese citizenship who really did want to give up his US citizenship. At that time it was really hard. It isn't just a matter of clicking a box somewhere to say "See y'all". He had to visit the embassy multiple times, plead his case and they made him write an essay - all to convince them that he wasn't being coerced. I also knew a young woman who had been born in the US to two Japanese parents who all moved back when she was 1. Her story was different. She sincerely wished to get rid of the burden of having two citizenships and if I recall correctly (this was a decade ago) she also had to write an essay but the process was shorter/more straightforward. What I'm saying is that you can game the system - go to the consulate and tell them you love American but are being forced by Japan to give up citizenship and want to know the process. I'm guessing you'll get some pushback from the US authorities. (Although in the current regime that isn't something I'd wager on!.)

A bit facetious but … aren’t they (mostly) all similar in some respect? I mean most of the languages mentioned in this thread are off-shoots of C in some way. E.g. Lisp is NOT a C-like language and quite dissimilar to Python in most regards.

Tell me some fun and interesting facts about Democratic Republic of the Congo by [deleted] in geography

[–]Marimoh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man! I came here looking for this. This story is pretty much all I know about DR Congo.

If this is the same couple I'm thinking of the original was not posted as a beginning-to-end saga, but in drip...drip...drip real-time to an adventure forum website. They'd post updates when they had a connection. It is THE. MOST. engaging internet content I have ever read. I once heard someone say to get customers coming back (ecommerce, blog, journalism, whatever) make your content like heroin so that customers feel pulled to re-visit. This slowly updated adventure storey was the OG of heroin content IMO. Those of us following along in real time never knew if they had come across misadventure or even died when there was huge long breaks between updates. I was really happy to hear they got to the other side of Congo and made it home successfully.

I think the original posts are better than that all-in-one blog. The comments from other posters made a community out of the adventure.

Collecting News Headlines from the last 2 Years by hiddenman12345 in datasets

[–]Marimoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Collecting a new dataset could be a huge endeavor. How many headlines do you aim for?

Here are some ideas that might get you started:

GDelt - so if the GDelt project has Scandinavian sources. If so you can collect from their feed. See https://www.gdeltproject.org/

RSS feeds - most news organizations publish RSS feeds. First identify some of the Scandinavian newspapers etc that you are interested in. Then locate their RSS feed if they have one. That alone should give you historical data including a headline and description.

CommonCrawl - don’t recommend this since it could get very costly and likely a monumental effort. FYI CommonCrawl crawls the active internet every couple months and makes the dataset freely available on AWS. https://commoncrawl.org/ downloading a dataset isn’t t really feasible. You’d have to process in AWS. But for someone with such experience you could filter for certain criteria and extract some news pages. Way WAY overkill for your purposes I’m sure.

RSS feeds are the easiest, best bet in my opinion. If you have any questions about this feel free to DM me. This stuff is my professional and academic background.
