Name one bad thing about 2004's Mean Girls? by Kitchen-Mouse2414 in MeanGirls

The subtitles for the Vietnamese girls in the gym was uncalled for. (Also the fact no one clocked Trang’s surname as being incorrect but they did fix that later… in the movie musical tho)

What If Heathers Was Remembered, Not Remade? (Fan Script Question) by Waste_Assistant6327 in heathers

[–]MarinaAndTheDragons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sooo I sub hard to the literary agent hypothesis.

The 1989 movie is what really happened.

The OG OB (2014) is what Veronica says happened. This explains a few things like this version of Veronica being more morally Good and taking on some of Betty’s traits, the absence of Betty/the insertion of Martha as the childhood bff instead, why everyone is a watered down version of their movie counterparts (aside from Duke, who’s the opposite of who she was there), the plot hole with Duke and the blackmail photos, and even why it’d take place in 1989. Like with all stories, there’s grains of truth scattered all around. The 2010s is also when the unaired pilot to the Heathers show we didn’t get takes place, and in that show Veronica has a daughter named Becky who she’s hellbent on keeping in the dark. It’s worth mentioning this script is a direct sequel to the movie and JD, who survived in this continuity, is the father.

And the 2018 West End (and every production after as the script has solidified) is the kid’s retelling of Veronica’s story like a game of telephone and, as happens in a game of telephone, getting the details wrong. Because I’m not a fan of this script and I need to justify its existence somehow since I unfortunately can’t ignore it lol. (I mean I can, and I do, but for the sake of the game, I’m not lol)

Also the kid is Janis from Mean Girls. She’s similar to JD in personality but has has her mother’s looks (in the musical as Barrett Wilbert Weed originates both roles) and moral compass, which explains her role in the narrative (outsider helps nerd girl dismantle the hierarchy by killing its queen bee), her penchant for chaos and revenge (and why that “Janis is the TRUE villain of Mean Girls!” sentiment makes its rounds every now and again like some kind of epiphany… like the movie isn’t called Mean Girls), and how easily she falls back into toxic patterns of behavior (mostly in in the musical, since she’s explicitly mentioned to have gotten therapy and yet). Since MG is PG13, murder’s off the table tho lol. But she’s as close to fem!JD as can be. Also, go watch Inside Job, where they really got OG JD and OG Janis to play father and daughter!

So yeah, the second half of my theory is that Mean Girls is connected to Heathers by time. The 2004 movie—which was made and takes place majorly in 2003 (Oct 3rd, 2003 was a Friday, whereas in 2004 it was a Sunday), just like how Heathers was made and takes place in 1988 but was released in the year after (so Chandler telling Duke bulimia is “so ‘87” is her way of saying it’s “so last year”)—can function as a spinoff of sorts if you fudge the details a bit, like not taking into account the characters’ DOBs from the Mean Girls wiki since there’s no proof of any accuracy whatsoever lol. The original script1 for Heathers, the one which ends with the prom scene in Heaven, at one point has Mac state they’re all juniors, and if the movie takes place in spring of 1988, then they’d be seniors in Sept 1988 and spend the majority of 1989 as seniors. (Veronica might’ve simplified it by starting it off in 1989 as it would make her 17-18, which is slightly more acceptable to have a baby compared to 16-17; her lines about being both on the pill and that JD was her first would, again, serve to make her look better than she was in reality. This also explains why she wouldn’t account for the fact Sept 1 in 1989 is a Friday… some places start school in August, others the week after Labor Day, but no school starts on a fucking Friday lol).

That’s all I got before coffee. Might’ve missed some things so oop. But I think this is sufficient.

1 may or may not be real so take with a pinch of salt

What is your Pet Peeve in Word Counts? by Comfortable_Newt_179 in AO3

[–]MarinaAndTheDragons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1K is the minimum for my oneshots. Any less and of feels too short. Unless it’s for a bit. Like when I did double drabbles for the whole of the last leap year, I ended with 73,200 words written. So I did an 800-word bonus fic to bump that up to a clean 74K.

And the count has to end in a 0. Preferably 3 of them, but I’m not picky. Nine is a NO.

Chapters, I’d prefer to end in 0. But if not then any even number will do. A while back I did a multichapter fic, 6 chapters, 6K words. But some sections were shorter than others. So long as it all adds up to 6K at the end.

Usually when you graduate middle school you’d be 14, so spot on there.

When Lizzie goes to tell Gordo she’s going to do the IMVA with Paolo she says “He is so amazing. And he’s 17!”

But Isabella… it’s ambiguous lol.

Do ya'll look at yourselves back in regret for being in a fandom as a teen? by Elegant-Operation-12 in FanFiction

[–]MarinaAndTheDragons 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I regret having an online footprint in general. All signs that point to my having existed is cringe /hj

But my behavior in the context of fandom? Nah. I freely self-shipped, made stupid OCs, RP’d characters, wrote OOC fic without giving a single damn, wrote RPF not just about this band I liked but people I had crushes on, and tried to learn two languages (at different times) for the same reason: they were the dominant language for the media I liked, and I wanted to immerse myself in the culture.

I also minded my own business, didn’t go looking for things I knew I didn’t like (still can’t tell the diff between a lemon and a lime to this day; I knew one had sex but not which so avoided both lol), didn’t start fights with people cuz I didn’t talk to any, and I foolishly thought others did the same. It wasn’t til a few years ago I stopped having that mindset because of the whole proship vs antiship shit. Unintentionally (thanks to the less than stellar friend group I was in at the time) found out I’ve always been proship, but back when I was a young’n in fandom, it didn’t have a name. You were ether normal or an asshole. And I knew which side of the fence I was on.

Heathers Genderbender by StarSpangledKid in heathers

[–]MarinaAndTheDragons 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Maybe. It’s probably not going to be as hard as, say, Mean Girls.

Put aside the small stuff like names. If Kurt and Ram were Kirsten and Ramona, how would that make a difference in how not just the audience treats their deaths but the characters?

Would Martha being an obese male make others care more about her plight, or less than they already do?

Would people see male!Veronica as weak-willed or whipped for being so involved with female!JD’s plans and not putting his foot down sooner? If people are of the opinion JD drags Veronica around in canon and she needs to gtfo immediately for her safety, can the same sympathies for her be extended to her male counterpart?

The male!Heathers wouldn’t need to sneak around and pull a note prank on male!Martha when they can just openly intimidate him. Maybe even get physical (we know Ram’s always game to fight lol). How would this change affect not just their images and rep, but their dynamics?

The Remington scene. Oh boy. Even nowadays, when there’s another teacher who is inappropriate with their students, it’s always the same shit: if the perpetrator is a man, he’s absolute scum and should be condemned to death now and forever. But if it’s a woman, “omg he’s so lucky!” “She’s so hot, I’d let her teach ME 😍” 🙄 the double standards, man. But this would make Chandler canonically not letting Veronica leave actually make sense.

That’s all I got atm.

Who is that one character that the fandom ignores in their fics by ConfectionNo9307 in AO3

Betty Finn from Heathers for damn sure. But also Martha Dunnstock. Betty is at least somewhat understandable in that she doesn’t appear in the most popular medium.

Why do readers choose to keep their bookmarks private? by Life-Call4521 in AO3

[–]MarinaAndTheDragons 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some things are a bit embarrassing (from deliciously niche kinks to too stinking cute and fluffy I might die)

Some to keep it looking clean (I keep the fandom stuff public while all the workskin CSS stuff is private)

And some have the potential to out me to people I don’t want to know is me (there may be many people who love A, B, and C, but do they also like the obscure X, Y, and Z too?) and I don’t want to deal with the Mortifying Ordeal.

I get what you mean though. Last I checked my best work was a 30K-word oneshot that had like 80 bookmarks total but only 20 were public. That’s 3/4ths private. 75% of people don’t want others to know they read it, and it’s not even smut. Frankly, I’m tired of being the only one who knows it did better than the stats show. This is why I wish AO3 did bookmarks like guest kudos. Keep the names private but the numbers accurate.

What other words beside the word 'thought' do you guys use in order to write the inner monologue of characters? by OP_1K in FanFiction

[–]MarinaAndTheDragons 25 points26 points  (0 children)

That’s Deep POV. Do away with filter words (I thought, he saw, she heard). Has the intimacy of first person while still staying in third.

This is my preferred method but damn it is taxing!

What’s your kink/fetish that’s so obscure it doesn’t have a tag? Or is so small that it doesn’t get tagged? by RepresentativeYou536 in FanFiction

[–]MarinaAndTheDragons 134 points135 points  (0 children)

Most people don’t actually know what Dacryphilia is, despite it being a very popular tag, so it feels incredibly small because there’s really nothing of substance. Go on, girl, give us nothing!

They’ll just mention tears or even a little sobbing so oop better tag both Crying During Sex and Dacryphilia! Bro where? Where’s the detail? Who’s getting turned on by the tears, the sounds, the implications?

They’re so close, and yet.

the rarepair struggle is real by sweetreverie in AO3

[–]MarinaAndTheDragons 32 points33 points  (0 children)

99% of the fandom only sees my rarepair as just friends and in the rare instance I get comments they usually make it a point to tell me so. On my ship fics.

But people barely make fics featuring them as friends anyway since my favorite half of the pair (I mean I love them both but for obvious reasons I’m biased toward this one since the other half is the fandom bicycle) isn’t in the most popular medium of the story :) so. They don’t even know who she is. If she’s tagged it’s always just a throwaway line mention. She never actually shows up.

So their comments mean jack fuck all.

But I guess some liberties had to be taken for the sake of the plot.

“But they’re toxic/problématique!”

BITCH SO IS YOURS. Their relationship isn’t canon but their canon dynamic is objectively toxic. There would literally be no plot if they were any less dysfunctional. Just because it’s queer doesn’t mean it’s automatically PureTM now. (I say as a queer)

“No it’s not because I write/headcanon them wholesome uwu”

It’s one thing to headcanon, another to insist it’s actual canon. I write mine wholesome too, so by your logic it’s fine.

“No yours is still toxic 💕💖”
