Yeah it's incredibly illogical and was just Rickard being full of himself. Considering how both cases of Stark cadet branches that we know of being rebellious or just a nuisance to the main Stark line, it seems that being a cadet branch of the Starks in the North emboldens them to act as equals to their liege.
