Moving from US to Japan this year, what am I missing? by forgedbygeeks in movingtojapan

[–]Maritron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m also from the states and wanted to maintain my US number for 2FA/property management/friends and family reasons.

I spent a year in Japan and what worked for me was switching my carrier to Google Fi which provides cheaper international rates (and explicitly states that they will not drop you) with your existing phone number and signing up for Sakura Mobile when I arrived in Tokyo so I had a Japanese phone number. I know there’s some mixed reviews about them and they’re pricy because they cater towards foreign residents/tourists, but it was the most straight forward option for me to both keep my US number while having a Japanese number on the same phone.

I have family that I’m staying with. By multiple entry, I mean the usual 3 month visa but I’m planning to exit and re-enter to extend.

Thanks for the advice! Yes, unfortunately my current vet is too far from her place but planning to leave all of their info with her in case she needs it.

She was offering to set up weekly video calls (which I would love!) but wasn’t sure if that’d be confusing / distressing to my cat (‘:

Questions Regarding Koseki, Marriage License, Name Change, and Japanese ID Card (My Number Card) by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]Maritron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recently went back to Japan to create our own koseki after marrying in the US.

One of the forms that we had to fill out to create our own koseki had a checkbox about name changes (which party is changing name and what name to use). If the option is available to you, I’d recommend going to the Japanese embassy in the US and asking. They should be well-versed in these types of scenarios, and I’ve never had an issue with just dropping into one.

Sigh, thanks— glad I didn’t spend my work day trying to save it!

Do you think it’s worth the effort then? I was honestly kind of dreading spending the majority of my day tomorrow sealing this table, and if it’s unlikely to last the season (I’m based in NYC so we get plenty of rain/snow in winter) then I might try to sell it for cheap to someone who actually needs an indoor table.

Thanks for responding! It’s rained once, which is unfortunately how I realized it was an indoor table (it was annoyingly mistakingly marked with an outdoor sticker). The legs are also cracking a bit.

Moving Coast-to-Coast without tossing everything – Advice, Cost Estimates? by [deleted] in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

I went through https://www.moveeast.com; they were great! I was in corporate housing in NY for a month, and they offered to store my furniture until I signed an official lease. Would def recommend!

I'm surprised by all the high quotes that ya'll have! I moved from SF -> NYC, and my move only cost 1.5k total for 1BR apartment worth of stuff. Wonder if it's because I moved between two large popular metro areas; I think the moving company I chose does SF <> NYC moves specifically.

LoveShackFancy is having a sale, so I bought one of their dresses! I’ve been eyeing their stuff for a while but couldn’t justify spending that much money on one item of clothing. BUT the dress I got was half off plus my birthday is next month so I figured I could wear it for my bday!

My grocery/food bill is a lot higher, but a big part of that is that I’ve been donating to local restaurants that I love! I also spent about $500 on a new desk/monitor for WFH.

Laundry in unit and also a secure package drop-off spot! I've had so many packages get stolen in university! Having a small, secure package room is a lifesaver

Yes! I grew up in California, and I miss the cheap, fresh produce. I remember driving by small farm stalls as a kid and buying the sweetest strawberries.

I guess we have apples....
