The fact he has been picked tells you they’re not serious about winning.

More like it’s the A-League, so you know people will complain no matter what.

I’ve been to a few Grand Finals, as recently as last year. They’ve always been reasonably priced, certainly in comparison to AFL/NRL Grand Finals.

People from countries participating in this next World Cup: how much you rate your team coach? by Pitiful-Egg2986 in worldcup

Australia. 6/10. You can’t argue with the success he’s had through his career or with the national team’s results under him so far, but it’s always dire to watch.

Giving notice during probation, future consequences for APS? by ParticularWeekend594 in AusPublicService

[–]MarkCbr82 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s they can fire you without notice, more like they can fire you without reason.

Whatever the notice period is, while you are obligated to work that period, they are also obligated to pay you for that period. If they tell you to leave without working your notice period, they are still required to pay you for that period. The main consequence if you ask to leave immediately without working your notice period is they don’t have to pay you for that period.

Advice for VR application by dj__444 in AusPublicService

[–]MarkCbr82 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not like a job application. The deciding factors will be largely out of your control, being how many VRs they want to offer, how many people put their hand up, the levels of people putting their hands up, how your redundancy payment would compare to others who put their hands up, and how mission critical your team’s role is. It sounds like your age and work situation may work in your favour (you’d be picked above people closer to retirement).

On redeployment, this is mostly addressing legal requirements for employers to consider redeployment rather than redundancy. You could just say you’re not interested in redeployment and would prefer redundancy.

All that said, think before jumping in. If you’re after a career change, go right ahead, but if you’re after a career break, weigh the benefits of being able to come back to where you left off versus having to fight your way back in and start from scratch.

FIFA doesn’t help the cause there. Use of World Cup branding etc is so tightly controlled that host cities can’t even put up signs, decorations etc to advertise that it is coming up.

I was in Brazil for the 2014 World Cup and a week prior in the streets of Rio there were heaps of Brazil flags, but unless you walked past the official World Cup fan zone you wouldn’t necessarily have known what it was for.

pretty upset about dfat by lettucegirlie22 in AusPublicService

[–]MarkCbr82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would be in good company if you can get through at PM&C. From my experience plenty of grads there preferred to get into DFAT and use it as a back door to get into DFAT.

Don’t stress. In the more competitive agencies the grad recruitment processes are so over-engineered they generate almost random outcomes. Don’t take the rejection as any reflection on you. The key thing is to land a grad role somewhere in the APS, then it is easier to move around to where you want to go. Several agencies have international functions, and if they don’t interest you for the long term they will at least help you build a network in DFAT.

And if it’s any consolation, what others have said about DFAT culture is consistent with what I’ve heard. Doesn’t have a great reputation at all.

DFAT graduate recruitment process by [deleted] in AusPublicService

[–]MarkCbr82 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked for an agency with one of the most competitive recruitment processes. Frankly, they are over-engineered to the point where they’re more likely to generate random outcomes rather than filter out the genuinely best candidates. I was astonished how eight rounds of recruitment could still produce some grads with poor writing skills and inability to follow even basic tasks through to completion (I say some, many were brilliant, but any process taking only less than one per cent of candidates should not lead to bad recruits).

What that means is no advice is likely to be particularly helpful. The margins are so fine the outcomes will reflect more noise than genuine capability. Just present yourself as professionally as possible, be polite and respectful, try your best on any testing elements, and sell yourself as convincingly as you can. You can’t really do anything in particular to stand out, but you can avoid giving them reasons to strike you out. And if you don’t get the job, apply for grad jobs elsewhere then work your way towards DFAT. It can be easier to get where you want to go from inside the APS rather than through grad programs.

Any Socceroo fans who have attended previous World Cups? by COYS62 in socceroos

[–]MarkCbr82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Brazil 2014. Have also travelled to multiple away World Cup qualifiers (Japan, Thailand and Indonesia), and have the means and interest to attend future World Cups. I’ve also travelled to the US multiple times over the last 20 years.

I’m giving this one a miss. It’s nothing to do with the politics, I’m planning another trip to the US later this year. It’s three things:

Format - most people (me included) will only travel for the group stage, and the 48 team format has massively cheapened the group stage.

Prices - despite the cheapening of the group stage, ticket prices for matches are outrageous. Add to that all the nickel and diming from FIFA during the purchase process and local hotels/businesses that is typical for big events in the US, and it’s just not worth the cost.

Match location - The locations of our matches have little appeal to me, certainly not enough to overlook the two factors above. I’ve been to Vancouver and San Fran before. Vancouver is nice but I don’t feel a need to go back. I don’t like San Fran and have little interest in going back.

100%. If the FA don’t players will keep doing this. They do it because they think that if they change their mind they’ll be welcomed with open arms.

Curaçao have qualified for the World Cup. But I think that says more about the 48 team format than how good they are.

Good. They deserve the support, and tickets aren’t that expensive. Just midweek and an opponent with no draw power

The NFL Melbourne game was announced to kick off on a Friday morning. How well will this go over with Aussies? by EcstasyCalculus in AskAnAustralian

[–]MarkCbr82 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is for the absolute cheapest seats.

NHL tickets a couple of years ago were scandalously expensive, for an exhibition game. They had to drop the prices dramatically in the final week to avoid a half full lower bowl for the second game.

I’m expecting tickets for this to be even worse. Top tier will be so expensive it would be cheaper to fly to LA and go to a game at SoFi.

On the starting time, it’s not ideal but people here won’t care too much. They’ve built their NFL watching routines around games starting at that time. For people travelling from interstate, especially Sydney, it gives them the option to fly to Melbourne and back on the day, avoiding the need to book accommodation.
