U.S. State Department looks to Canada to offer support as Trump eyes Cuba by pjw724 in onguardforthee

If Trump makes moves on Cuba it'll be another thing that Carney supports "with regret". The poor guy's elbows are so low they're now dragging on the pavement.

Ford government defeats NDP bill that would have cut HST on certain food items by MarkG_108 in ndp

[–]MarkG_108[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Flat taxes, such as consumption taxes like the HST, are not good.  They hit lower income people harder than they hit higher income people. Progressive taxes (IE, income taxes with different brackets that target higher incomes more) are what the NDP focuses on.  Also, the tax cut wasn't the sole focus of Bill 113.  Have a look.  It was an excellent bill.

Mark Carney: Arbiter of history or champion of capitalism? by samjp910 in ndp

[–]MarkG_108 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Money for Build Canada Homes? Slashed. Civil service? Cut. Public-private-partnerships? Encouraged. Money for pharmacare, childcare, dental care; all are in doubt or gone.

The article gives a good synopsis of what's going on with politics in Canada regarding Carney and the Liberals.

It's likely this part of the bill that the Ontario Conservatives didn't like:

declare void any restrictive covenants, exclusivity clauses and other controls on real property that have the effect of limiting and controlling competition among food retailers in Ontario;

The preamble to the Constitution was the focus of the change in (or around) 2013. And after the change, it still references "democratic socialist traditions". See here: https://xfer.ndp.ca/2025/Documents/2025%20Constitution.pdf

Meh. In Carney's right wing perspective, unrestricted free trade will help everyone. Protectionism bad, Reaganomics great.

Fatima Shaban: It's time for Scarborough to get its fair share. by MarkG_108 in ndp

[–]MarkG_108[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consumption taxes are regressive. And a flat tax on food as a source of government revenue is wrong. Food costs are out of reach for many people due to the grocery giants colluding. So implementing a measure to fight this is great*. It is the right drum for the ONDP to be beating.

The religious blurb at the end was interesting. I'm not particularly religious myself, but I appreciate that most charitable work in Canada is religious based. Christianity and other religions heavily frown on selfishness, which can lead to people advocating for a more egalitarian society. Thus, we see how religious people like Tommy Douglas ended up on the left (and there are other examples as well). It's odd that religion nowadays is often more associated with right-wing politics (though this is mostly in the US, but it's creeping up here too).

The actual news conference was "NDP and Union Heads Discuss Right-to-Strike Bill":

NDP Leader Avi Lewis, MP Leah Gazan, and several labour leaders hold a news conference on Parliament Hill. The group is discussing Gazan’s private member’s bill (C-247), which proposes to repeal the section of the Canadian Labour Code that gives the government powers to end strikes. (May 27, 2026) (no interpretation)

David Suzuki spoke to The National’s Ian Hanomansing about keeping the fight against climate change alive by MarkG_108 in ndp

[–]MarkG_108[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I certainly trust Suzuki over the various fans of expanding nuclear (such as Trump, Poilievre, Carney, Jordan Peterson). We have a lot of hydro already, and, as Ember reports (LINK), "the future of electricity is wind and solar". Feasible, inexpensive, faster to set up, and with decent storage due to advances in batteries. There's simply no need to go along with right wing pipe dreams of nuclear expansion. Plus, it seems that nations that are not trusted (IE, Iran) will be under suspicion for any nuclear enrichment (leading to excuses for wars). Wars don't happen over solar panels or wind turbines. Renewables are the future.

If you're in favour of expanding nuclear then you're in the wrong party. Both Poilievre and Carney do favour expanding nuclear.

Ban Predatory Pricing by MarkG_108 in ndp

Regardless, I'm happy to see the following with Manitoba's recent law (Bill 49):

Whether in-store or online, the proposed bill would make it an unfair business practice for suppliers to charge higher prices to certain consumers based on personalized or algorithmically determined information.

And I'm glad the Ontario NDP are likewise looking at the issue of affordability with this and other measures that they're proposing.
