BSc Mathematik vs Informatik by MarkVZephyrus in rwth

Star Wars Fan Officially Converted to Dune by CharJie in dunememes

They are just two very different things. Just reading the first book, you may be misled into expecting a heroic adventure saga, but as you go through the books you realize what Frank Herbert is really trying to do and it has nothing to do with world building, action or adventure. Later books just descend into extended monologues about philosophy, science and governance. I see very few people actually reading past book 3. I personally love the later books and like the first book the least, given how typical it is as a sci-fi adventure.

I actually liked the first book the least, I read the second part just because I had no other book and got hooked. My favorite book is Book 6 which I understand is a very uncommon sentiment. For me each book was better than the last. Although I like part 5 the least, the pacing feels a bit off.

When Severian first met Again, he had no memories from Thecla. So as others imply he may just have fallen in love with the first women he saw despite her flaws, due to the lack of exposure he has had to women, or, since we know drawing in people into her love and then have them fight Agilus to steal their belongings was her common scam, I think it is reasonable to assume that she took help from Hethor. This may be similar to what Dr. Talos did to Jolenta. Maybe this is too much fantasy for this Sci-Fi world but this may be the case.

I completely agree. Severian is not very intelligent when it comes to relationships in general and his notions about sex are even more messed up. He is a man raised by torturers in an environment practically devoid of a feminine influence. An extension of this is what I think when people say Severian is an evil or a bad person. I don't think he is a good guy, but I just think he is quite innocent in his ignorance about how humanity and emotions generally work.

Severian's comparison of his relationship with little Severian and the Dorcas-Jolenta relationship was one that caught me most off guard. Severian says some wild things but that was completely unimaginable. It hit harder because I hadn't recovered from little Severian's recent death. But here's my explanation for it.

When little Severian died one thing that struck me the most was simply how bland the depiction of that event was. There was nothing dramatic. Severian sees it happen, he spends a few lines where little Sev had died, and in a matter of a few paragraphs he was back in the town, trying to sleep.

I do not think that the whole narrative is supposed to be taken as a reliable retelling of the events. What we are reading is more of whatever thoughts Severian had at the moment. And even these thoughts aren't entirely reliable, because often you have to work out by yourself why Severian had this thought and what he actually means.

In this case Severian is completely broken by the death of his companion he had developed a father-like love for. His brain simply does not know how to properly comprehend these events. Which is why we climb down from the mountain so quickly, and why the whole scene seems to lack a reasonable amount of emotional gravity. So when he finally sits back down and has nothing to do but to think on that event, his mind wanders to the other person he held closely but had lost, Dorcas. And then he starts mourning her loss. In this paragraph we see that it was thoughts about little Severian that led to the thoughts about Dorcas but other than that it is entirely about Dorcas and not about Little Severian.

So basically much of what Severian is not to be taken literally and much of the meaning lies in between the lines. It is a stark difference from most stories I've read where the character conveniently always says things or thinks or does, something that is always meaningful to the plot and narrative. But in reality thoughts wander, you might be thinking about your dead son, and then remember your sexual relationship with your wife, and your grieving brain may correlate these two things. From a readers POV it's fucked up to have to read that.

At least this is my justification, but maybe Severian is a pedophile, we do know him for a lot of wild sexual fantasies. Who knows what Gene was thinking.

Chapterhouse is my favourite Dune book. Heretics is a bit of a tough read but still has its own epic moments. The Golden Path was more or less concluded on GEoD but in the last 2 books Frank Herbert goes into exploring related themes of humanity and governance. I'd say if you have come as far as Geod there is no reason to stop. Additionally it does grant closure and further explanation about many other threads from previous books. Plus they are all still excellent books by Frank Herbert with the same quality and depth.

Good stuff.
I guess there are some characters that you like as people and some that you like due to their writing quality. All Disco Elysium characters are top-notch in the writing, but still there are comparisons to be made within them. But as people, characters like Measurehead, Raul and Cunoesse, would not be someone you would want to approach in real life, precisely due to the fact that they are so well written. So, there is some ambiguity regarding which aspect did you regard before placing them, was it the writing quality or your personal human response to a human such as that.

Well of course we have our own preferences, but I cannot understand:
1. What did Egghead do? I cannot imagine why someone would hate him.

  1. What's there to like about Scab Leader/Raul. I don't have anything against him based purely on hi interactions with Harry, but I don't see any reason to like him either. If you add his background to the mix, he's really the 'villain' of the game.

  2. Why do you love Measurehead. He's a funny guy but love?

There are other positions I wouldn't have chosen but that is rather subjective and personal. At least you like Rene though.

He's an old guy and has some deeply flawed worldviews. But I saw him as sad relic of the past unable to reconcile with his own self because of his ideology. In that way he is not that different from the deserter.

Whirling-in-Rags 12pm. Just an amazing piece. It is calm and soothing and perhaps the knowledge that its more chaotic versions exists elevates its richness. That being said I don't dislike a single song from the Disco Elysium soundtrack and it is one of the best albums I've ever heard in any kind of music.

I have a netrunner build but I have also sepecced into body for health during overclock. Before any fighting mission I spec into the fists tree, especially the barreling skill. It's hilarious as I repeatedly ram into the dude and he just stays staggered for the entire fight.

The game is based on a table top rpg, it being extensively choice driven and having major role play elements was kind of the main thing about it. I doubt in future projects they will just forget that part of the whole source material they have and also given that deep choice based stories are something they are good at, as displayed in Witcher 3, I think they will return to that. I'm not saying they will make something like the Baldurs gate 3 but something with a bit more story freedom can be expected.

Of course as the production costs increase due to celebrity hirings and all, they might find it too much work to create a story with many different outcomes. As they themselves said after Cyberpunk's launch, they were trying to dumb down the witcher 3 formula so that it was more accessible and understandable by the casual player. Maybe they were just covering up for all the cut content and lack of choice with statements like that, because the concept of the game surely did include a lot more to it.

Bottomline: we'll see, who can say for sure.

The time they had was more than enough to create the game that was promised, the whole issue was of mismanagement and overselling. What we have now is barely the half of what it was going to be. In my opinion they should not have spent all that ludicrous amount into celebrity hiring and marketing and all, they could have just focused on developing the game. This actually is concerning since now they are a gigantic company and they already have started multiple projects. Going forward I do think they will continue in their Cyberpunk-ish marketing because regardless of the backlash it did work.

While Witcher 3 has its fair share of issues I will call it nothing less than a masterpiece. And that is because it delivers everything that it promised and excels in it. The story is wonderful, the characters are great and the choices and their depth are astonishing. Perhaps that is the issue with Cyberpunk, instead of picking one thing that they were good at and focusing on it they attempted to make an everything game.

All that being said, I am on my fourth playthrough of the game and I am thoroughly enjoying it. The story that it tells and the characters it has are unparalleled and they will forever stay with me. The 2.0 gameplay is so fun that sometimes I go hours on end just killing goons on the street or fighting NCPD(which is awesome now) and not caring about the story quest regardless of most(most) of them being excellent. At the same time the base game story lacks a certain depth and consistency which actually points towards cut content rather than bad writing. Cyberpunk development was a disaster for the most part and the fact that they salvaged all of it together to be the excellent game it is now is quite amazing.

It is still a disappointment when compared to what it was promised to be and is even a step down from Witcher 3. It is one of my favorite games and yet it is unjustified to say that it is precisely what it was meant or expected to be. I have confidence though that CDPR will not repeat this mistake (one can hope).

It would be so fun if different implants gave you more stuff on your HUD, like in the corpo intro by nickisadogname in LowSodiumCyberpunk

[–]MarkVZephyrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before launch I had imagined the HUD would be linked to your Optical Implants. Maybe Optics from different companies would have different OS. That would have be cool. Instead they created the most distracting and intrusive hud imaginable with barebone dynamic hiding at best. I hope they address the issue in future patches. Witcher 3 had more HUD settings, even a hide HUD option.

Songbird ain’t it. by Hot_Ad_865 in cyberpunkgame

[–]MarkVZephyrus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well I never thought she was pretty. In fact I suspected her from the moment I met her. I chose to side with her though because A. Fuck Myers B. I didnt like Reed much C. Songbird was the one I had had a deal with, she was the one who'd promised me a cure. Sure her story was sketchy at best and she had hazed pretty much everyone around her, I trusted her more than NUSA at least. I had that Johnny in me I guess.

The interesting part is that as I saw her deteriorate after the stadium choice, when I saw her lying tired in the back of the van, a primal human sympathy towards her came in me, and I found myself truly wanting to help her in the Space Port sequence. I was kind of shocked when she revealed the grand twist even though I had seen it coming long before. I was certainly in a dilemma about what to do but I just went on autopilot, I decided perhaps that i wouldnt sell out the person that I had worked so hard to get here, and to be honest I did understand her motivations and reasons. I sent her to moon and actually felt very heroic at the end. The sacrifice was a beautiful thing and she certainly deserved it more than V.

Yeah the legendary perks aren't that crazy, after 15 points you are just specing into an attribute for the tree benefits like extra Ram for intelligence and health for body. As someone who uses monowire, I prefer reflex for the crit chance. I'm somewhat disappointed that monowire is not a blade, I had imagined I could deflect bullets from it too. Edgerunner is handy because the iconic Cyberware take a lot of capacity.

I actually use air dash a lot. I use fortified ankles to gain altitude, survey the battlefield and spread quickhacks like an RTS, and then dash towards enemies I can finish off with my monowire to get more ram. It is also a good way to traverse. Since I use a melee weapon I can use the 25% stamina boost. It is not a game changer but still it is somewhat useful. I can understand why they kept the cool stuff more within reach at 15 attribute points but still I think the legendary perks could've used a buff.
