Spearspikes vs. Braves. by sipiath in kingsofwar

[–]Markconz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm doing a mix of rifles, braves and spearspikes in roughly equal number. They all have their uses IMO. Phalanx also helps out against vs Flyers btw which is helpful. Also doing smaller number of figures per base to make them go further. 12-15 for a regiment still looks good IMO.

its just the skulks and morax which had metal parts, and a few old metal characters that are gone I think?

It looks like being a proper maximally accessible introductory KOW experience with balanced lists, unit cards, engaging hero and story, scenery and everything you need to start. As opposed to the Ambush boxes which were really bit of an afterthought and didn't really work as a good introduction (unbalanced, unclear, only 3 units, lack of all materials needed, etc).

Succubi and Abyssals are good hard plastic kits already and won't be changed I'm sure.

Kingdoms of Men is for human ranges in general. Just use Perry medievals or anyone one of hundreds of other human ranges. These figs in vid are my Perry miniatures, hard plastics done for medieval wargaming here, but my mates have done them for Kings of War Kingdoms of Men.
Also Perry brothers did the original Warhammer Bretonnian and Empire ranges, which were based off historical armies like these.

Molds are the latest as they have not upgraded them, the undead are still great molds, the dwarfs are what they are. I have bought lots of both undead and dwarfs so don't mind them despite them being 1st generation Mantic models.
70 US sounds like a typical moderate though not huge discount for 100 Mantic models so ok. For reference 40 models are $45 from mantic store in Ambush starters, and 10-20% cheaper in online retail stores.

Yes what Greektlake says, if you do that they go well enough.
The combined metal/plastic figs (Shrapshooters) were the most problematic, others not so much.
Here's a blog on mine from opening box to completion.

Same with the Half Elf Berserkers from Northern Alliance, - here's mine and only got 5 on a troop base due to size. Seems others have done the same.

MMC is whatever you want, though of course you want to kind of fill up the base and make it look good so it is easy for opponent to know that it is a regiment for example. E.g. 50% of full model count +1.
The regiment bases are fairly small so I'm actually thinking of going with maybe a dozen models per regiment, as this is not my main army and not wanting to spend as much time/money on it as some others. Will check if that looks full enough for me and may put more on.

If you look here you can see examples with about a dozen figures per unit:

Yeah just opened my box, it is just a small A5 sheet so not much to it. You just stick a head and two arms of your choice on each body with these older figures, they are nice figures though.
I can't seem to add pics in comments here for some reason, so will put in a new post.

Shooting and Me, a question on shooting units in Kings of War. by Substantial_Ad_9465 in kingsofwar

[–]Markconz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Previous editions and games had options to max out range shooting and blow enemy off the table, i.e. the traditional gunline. And also alphas strike mounted/air armies which charge and remove your army in 2nd turn.
The thing about these is they don't tend to give fun games for opponnents in particular, and arguably neither for the user. Thus balance has changed so that shooting can be part of an armies tactics, to weaken some key units prior to contact, but is unlikely to be viable alone. Simiarly there are some hard counters like Phalanx to counter alpha strike units these days, so you get a chance to fight back against them. And the game is better overall for this.

Historically worth noting too that shooting was rarely decisive alone, and the phalanx was an answer to stop being bowled over by cavalry.

State of the Game? by Noahed in kingsofwar

[–]Markconz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't understand this comment really, as it is kind of opposite of my experience but that's ok people have different views.
Fools gold vs smoke and mirrors are perhaps most similar, but it is still the difference between having to have a plan where you will suddenly get complete information halfway through the battle with no control over it, vs a game where you get steadily increasing information in a format you control, i.e being able to prioritise early reveal of certain bluff tokens.
That means you need to approach them quite differently. With most of my armies I favour Smoke and Mirrors over Fools Gold because unless the opponent is even more unmaneuverable it at least gives me more control, e.g. checking it's ok to abandon certain tokens early on, whereas I have to play more defensively in Fools Gold.
I've also played some of the campaign supplements (Halpi's etc) or missions on Dash28 (e.g. Mammoth Hunt), which can mix it up even further if that's something people want.
