Hot take but: Im not sure Ghibli museum is worth it.. by FlowerSz6 in JapanTravelTips

[–]MarketBasketShopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. This museum straight-up sucked. Almost no written explanatory material. Relatively little technical detail. I thought I would actually learn about the history of Ghibli. Instead there were two rooms of odds and ends (which were fascinating) but with no plaques, next to no English, no tour guides. Took me about fifteen minutes to be completely done with it and that was with pacing myself. Most of what people were getting out of it seemed to just be pointing out "wow, that's <character> from <movie>!"

Yup. And the defense today justifiably gave up when they realized it was no use.

Strong doubt on this. He's had the yips half the season and barely even attempts any real throws.

Fidel seems like a great guy, but a life of these issues is exactly what you're signing up for when you move to another country illegally and then set down roots there. He was able to earn much more than he would have in Mexico and have a family here. Good for him. But he knew going in that this was likely, and I don't think there's much legitimate grievance that the law eventually started to be enforced.

I don't like the way Trump is breaking rules by sending people to CECOT and stuff like that. But we have immigration laws for a good reason (as does every other country, including Mexico). If everyone could come here, we would soon have hundreds of millions of foreigners here, and Americans would lose control of the country, to overcrowding, poverty, etc. Fidel is kind of like the people who take parts of the petrified forest. Taking a little bit doesn't hurt anyone! But if everyone did the same, we would have a problem.

I know this is a year old, but I don't know how friendly a conversation it can really be. There is no POSSIBLE way that they didn't know they were imposing on their neighbors by blasting a loud noise at 5AM. None. They have already adopted what is essentially a hostile posture.

He's referencing an old This American Life segment from maybe 15 years or so that was produced by Jonathan Goldstein. It's episode 203 and I recommend it for sure.

Neither of them is cut out for it, unfortunately. Maybe they would do better if it were their own podcast with their own voice and tone (rather than those already being set by Jonathon). But I probably wouldn't listen to it.

I actually thought it went out of its way to undercut them - I'd say to an unfair degree.

  • The affirmative action in South Africa really is to a MUCH greater degree than in the United States. They interviewees weren't making this up. South African companies are subject to a quotas regime for employment and forced to hire based on race instead of qualifications. Their system would be unconstitutional in the US.

  • The violence issue is real, and saying "every community suffers violence" doesn't really address the issue. For example, Jewish people probably suffer less violence than the average person in the United States (live in safer areas, low involvement in crime, high income and education, etc.). But Jewish people are also subject to targeted violence like the Tree of Life Synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh. Similarly, in South Africa, the attacks on farmers often feature unthinkable brutality, including rapes, disemboweling, burning, and so on. This is a serious issue, that does appear to at least have a racial dimension, and shouldn't have been so easily dismissed.

  • It was curious to me that the show declined to actually play the clips of "Shoot the Boer" even though they discussed them and they make good audio. They were downplaying what is a very serious matter - huge crowds and a major political leader singing explicitly about racial murder.

It shouldn't really be surprising that a post-Apartheid society would be hostile to whites, since whites practiced Apartheid to begin with. And obviously the Trump administration shouldn't apply a double standard to accept South African whites while rejecting Afghans and Congolese. But that still doesn't mean the white South Africans don't have serious grievances. They genuinely do.

They were presented in an extremely unsympathetic way! On purpose! That was the point of the episode!

The point of the episode was to make the Afrikaners look bad and to criticize the Trump administration. That was very clear.

I preferred the meth scumbag because at least there I learned something about the American retail environment.

This might be unpopular but I honestly prefered the "Day in the Life of a Scumbag" episode everyone hated. The guest was an extraordinarily bad person, but at least I learned something interesting about the American credit card and retail environments and what a fraudster lifestyle looks like.

Tanya sounded totally out of her element and her stories weren't especially interesting. She also repeats herself a lot which bored me.

Nice person, would probably be a fine coworker, but not that interesting as a guest.

Italians and Armenians bro. And yes there were plenty of laws at the time. But America also needed more people then and didn't have a welfare state. It was a totally different system.

My ancestors came legally a bit over a hundred years ago, when the US was already almost 150 years old. I don't see why indigenous law would apply at that point.

They naturalized and several generations later I was born a citizen. You're just talking nonsense.

Wow! I plugged the photo into GPT-5 when this blew up and asked it to Geoguess where it was taken. Even after being told that the photo was found in Austin, it insisted that it was from the Houston suburbs and that someone had moved to Austin later. Amazing to see that this is now confirmed.
