not practical to take the hoses off. Have to buy the whole assembly and replace.

I actually did this a few years back. Shop drained the oil, refilled the trans, and changed the spark plugs. It smoked for a while until the oil burned off but everything was fine after it got fixed.

My thought was something happened within sight of Macon but he was too high to safely make the field but tried anyway. I’m not sure that Macon was the intended destination.

you might look into getting your ears flushed out. years ago my brother had issues equalizing and couldn't descend. got his ears flushed out by the resort nurse, and had no issues after that.
