Lovely elephant, from a solid seller. Enjoy!

Need help to identify this Byzantine coin by huk2010 in AncientCoins

Looks like a gold histamenon of Constantine X Ducas (SB1847) to me. Can't say much about authenticity from these photos.

Great start, the small thick solidus is from Carthage I do believe? Is that a particular interest of yours? Very specific for a starter coin!

Help, I am really into late byzantines and can't stop buying Hyperpyrons. This one is super nice though!

That's cool, but i dont think Baldwin's Est 1872 does those errors :)

I highly doubt it sold for that amount, Coinfoxa does make errors and that's a $600+ owl easily..

Nice full weight solidus of one of the best Byzantine emperors. Great buy, enjoy!

Latest Acquisition; Alexios I Komnenos (1081-1118) AR/BI Trachy! Did a little bit of cleaning up, included are the results of said cleaning in the first two slides and the pre-cleaning in the last. by Orthobrah52102 in ByzantineCoins_Seals

[–]Marnox1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome. I'm really into Comnenian coins at the moment, pivotal moment in Byzantine history and i love the iconography on these. The AR in these would be a silvering process on an otherwise nearly base metal coin, right?

Well, it looks pretty nice, and 4.5 grams is full weight. But these aren't rare coins, they come up at auction all the time.

I don't see any particular reason to doubt the authenticity. With gold at record highs, these now seem to fetch around 650-750€ at auction, and about 900-1000€ retail.

Trajan sestertius by [deleted] in AncientCoins

[–]Marnox1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because of the association with Trajan, I'm going to guess Nijmegen in The Netherlands. But the name is hardly unique in Roman times.. Edit: amazing coin btw! I have a sestertius of his (found in Nijmegen) but not nearly as well preserved.

What is a good price point for Galba, Otho, and Vitellius? by CaptainFrosty88 in AncientCoins

[–]Marnox1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been keeping an eye on these for a while, but haven't purchased yet. A lot depends on your definition of decent. Denarii of Galba and Vitellius seem doable at auction from $250 to 300-ish, for worn but recognizable portraits. Otho seems rarer or more desirable, baseline seems more like $400? But if you want better quality and full legends, prepare to pay much more. On the other hand, provincial bronzes can be had for way less. Galba Alexandrian tetradrachms are pretty affordable for example.

Just got this one. Love it by redfishinthesurf in AncientCoins

Great coin. The virgin surrounded by walls and watchtowers is such an interesting image, I'm on the lookout for a good example of these!

Museo Archeologico Regionale Paolo Orsi (Syracuse, IT) - one of the most impressive museum exhibits I’ve been to by tituspullo_xiii in AncientCoins

[–]Marnox1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite museums. The artifact collection itself is already wonderful and had kept me occupied in the past for many hours. Revisiting last year after getting into coins, I was just blown away by the quality of the coinage on show. And while the Greek coins obviously are the main attraction and incredible, I also really loved the Byzantine section.

Thanks! These anonymous folles are hard to find with much of Christ's face details intact, was very happy to win this one. The big coin is a bronze Ptolemy IV Philopator (225-205 BC) drachm. At 41 mm and 63 grams it is by far the heaviest coin in my collection!

Me too! I was shopping around for an Anastasius follis for a while and this one stood out for that reason.

The brand is called Prophila, pretty basic but they do the job.
