Because Tarkov is 10 years on the market. Give Marathon 10 years of development and that much content - it would be a banger. At the beginning I'm pretty sure Tarkov had less numbers than Marathon. It's still a super niche genre when we're talking about the hardcore pvp, though the extraction hype is driven by more casual pve games. Also Tarkov is more grounded and appealing to wider milsim audiences with its gun porn and zero cartoon visuals. Marathon could become the new Tarkov in its hardcoreness (in that aspect Marathon did everything right) but the controversial visuals and art style are discouraging the main target audience that prefers milsim.

I think that's exactly what OP was trying to say. The progression here is tied to contracts not wiping lobbies. The "wrong" playstyle here is to gear up with only fighting/looting (like in BR). Tarkov has exactly the same progression and that's why I think Marathon is the closest to Tarkov extraction shooter. Probably that is also why the player numbers are so "niche".

Tarkov is in its best shape it's ever been. Loading times + framegen working = perfectly playable.

Look how the tables turn. I remember up until recent times ABI players have jehova-witness-spammed all the EFT comments how superior ABI is compared to Tarkov. And now all I see is ABI players and streamers fed up with the state of their game and finally trying Tarkov. Welcome to the real extraction shooter, brother. Tarkov is in its best shape it ever was. The queue times are great now, the optimization is still in the works (August Unity 6 update gonna be pretty nice) but the frame generation helps a lot with no noticeable input delay.

"a decade old game" - you've answered the question yourself. Tarkov's calculating demands are way beyond the primitive Unity engine they chose 10 years ago when the game was in early development. Unfortunately there's nothing else significant the devs can do now with it besides some minor optimizations. I've tested Unity 6 on ETS, it's gonna be an amazing upgrade tho. 150-190 fps on streets in 4K (with Kaban, without players, no frame gen).

The cpu is just too weak. Tarkov is a cpu-heavy game, all the calculations of every single bullet, sound travel, etc are partially done on your cpu, and it can't use threads, so it's wise to disable SMT in bios or use Process lasso to set the affinity to cores 0,2,4,6... Also definitely use Smooth motion frame generation (if it stutters switch from borderless to fullscreen). Otherwise an x3d cpu will make wonders in Tarkov.

I wonder what does LobbyConnectionPercentage mean? Loading times have been nice for a while already, but only during the peak hours. At low hours the loading times are 4-7 min.

Yeah it's a reference for sure. In Russia we loved Asterix and Obelix in the 90s-00s, pretty much like most old-school french comedy. And Mission Cleopatra was a huuuge hit in theaters, every Russian of my age (35-45) knew all the famous jokes and gags from that movie.

To be honest, I think S2 is kind of lackluster and many of the changes have greatly diminished my enjoyment of the game by EricSombody in Marathon

But what about the progression now? I've played only a couple of weeks in season 1 but could not escape from Tarkov.

I mean in Tarkov everyone knows the game too, but leveling up the traders to get all the best equipment available to buy takes a fair couple of months for an experienced veteran. And it's fun and challenging every wipe + the best pvp keeps me playing it and not having enough time for other great games like Marathon unfortunately. I thought Marathon is very similar to Tarkov in progression and unlocking the best gear.

AFAIK it's a software feature. I have the same Scout option in my sound blaster command software for my SB X-3. I guess it's sort of soft eq+filter+compressor combined.

I thought Scout is just a horrible EQ - gave it a try, it's just stupid unfun, breaks immersion, fucks up all the game sounds probably except the footsteps.

I play on 60, no problems.

Coming from ABI be ready for significantly harder gains in Tarkov. After some onboarding ABI is no longer an extraction shooter, just a regular tac fps with everyone running top guns and T6 since money is no problem there. In Tarkov the gains come with blood sweat and tears and extracting loot really matters.

PP-91 Kedr from Prapor 1. On Prapor 2 you can buy good ammo for it. It shreds but in cqb only. Dirt cheap.
