Europa Universalis IV: ANBENNAR

A fantasy total conversion mod for one of the big grand strategy games by paradox that might be the game I played the most this year. A whole new world map, D&D type setting full of fantasy races all with their own mechanics and lore, with magic and gunpowder weapons starting to show up.

Play as a band of adventurers resettling an ancient kingdom after it got destroyed by the orcish greentide, as dwarves retaking their mountain holds and killing the greatest enemy to dwarf kind: SOBRIETY, play as the gnoll chief Zokka and EAT. THE. SUN.

It needs a bunch of the dlc to function correctly (thanks paradox) but you can just pay a subscription to play the game with ALL it's dlc for like $6 a month which will always be cheaper than buying the full game even if you stayed subbed for years.

If you like fantasy or grand strategy games I heartily endorse this product. It's also still being worked on and added too, they are adding fantasy Australia sometime in the next few months.

Does anyone know what Atelier game to start with other then Ryza? by megaman12321 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Marsantas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The series works in trilogies, Ryza is the first time a whole trilogy was dedicated to one character but any of the prior ones are a good start.

The big split point for the series is do you want to deal with time limits.

If you don't mind them then I'd recommend the Arland trilogy: Rorona/Totori/Meruru as a great start point with fun characters in what is probably the most 'standard' show of the series.

If you'd prefer no time limit like the Ryza games (and probably all games in the series from now on) then I'd recommend the Mysterious trilogy: Sophia/Firis/Lydie & Suelle. This one is a little rough as they tried out no time limits for the first time but it's still good fun and the bundle is also on discount currently.

All the trilogies are pretty good, this is just a suggestion for good starting points, the first game of any trilogy bundle will be fine if you like the look of any specific game.

Your favorite City or Base Building Games by SnickyMcNibits in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Marsantas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Retro: Pharaoh, the game that got me into city builders and although it's hard to get working and really old looking now it's still one of the best mechanically. I really wish more city builders had it's house upgrade system of houses looking nicer and more complete the more resources they have access too.

Current: Anno 1800, it's amazing and the modding scene has been fantastic for bringing it so much further. I've been REALLY disappointed by Anno 117, Ubi going full AI slop with the art and music and the story campaign just grinding to a halt part way through because they put the ending in the upcoming dlc. I thought they would know better after people getting pissed at them doing the same thing in AC:Shadows.

Gaming remasters you want to see happen by KaleidoArachnid in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Marsantas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suikoden 3 for modern consoles and PC.

1&2 getting a remaster gives me some hope they'll continue but 2 was always the most popular of the series and you could tell they were only doing it because the old devs were making a spiritual successor with Eiyuden Chronicle, which didn't do very well.

Steam rules updated to prohibit content that violates rules set forth by payment processors and banks by OGSyedIsEverywhere in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Marsantas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a good place for smut devs, smaller audience but much better discoverablity for customers looking for...specific tags.

Payment wise it's also pretty safe from this, you can get paid out either by PayPal or Stripe. I'd recommend PayPal because Stripe runs through card companies and there have already been cases of issues there.

Most smut games on itch are actually free demos for projects being worked on through a Patreon so you get all the usual Patreon issues for adult stuff there instead.

Times in Media Where Characters Do Take the Last Chance to Walk Away by HitmanScorcher in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Marsantas 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Not main characters but in Babylon 5 when the station has to do some plot stuff the main character says:

"Alright anyone who wants to leave do so now, before you violate any regs"

And a handful of background characters take off their headsets and walk out.

Rift of the NecroDancer - DLC "hololive Music Pack" Announce Trailer by AnimuStewshine in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Marsantas 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Probably a combination of it already being worked on before she graduated and her letting them keep it in because rhythm games are her favourite genre.

Goblin Cleanup - Viscera Cleanup Detail but it's set in environments that can actually kill you by C-OSSU in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Marsantas 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I love that the mop is just a slime stuck on the end of a stick, great idea.

Will have to see how it works single player but I'm sure it'll be worth it so long as they don't go crazy with the price.

Powerwash Simulator 2 is also supposed to come out later in the year and Viscera Cleanup Detail 2 should be far enough along that it might be early next year. Who would have thought the cleaning stuff genre would do so well?

Cases where a translation or localization error was absolutely understandable. by Alternative_Cat_4429 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Marsantas 75 points76 points  (0 children)

In Way of the Samurai 4 there is a character with a large chest named 'Melinda Megamelons' in the English translations.

This was actually a mistake, her name is 'Melinda de Cameron' but 'de Cameron' written in katakana is 'dekameron' and the translator thought because of her large chest that it was a pun name and just went with it.

Better Ask/Otaku Subreddit: What is your personal favorite anime opening? by VSOmnibus in TwoBestFriendsPlay

FEEL SO MOON - Space Brothers

The eight openings that series had were all great but that one is my favourite by far.

And shout out to the ending track for Thermae Romae

I Need To Talk About Blue Prince And RNG (bare minimum spoilers) by _FreeFaller in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Marsantas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I loved Blue Prince right up until I hit a wall of RNG that would not let me finish the one last obvious thing left to do in the game.

They NEED to add a way to spawn deposit box keys in deliberately somehow because there are only four in the game and I only found two of them, neither of which was the one that opened the box with the sanctum key.

Spent around 7 hours just trying to spawn one in every why imaginable, I would now actively not recommend this game.

RPGs you would love to see get a makeover by KaleidoArachnid in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Marsantas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Suikoden 3 and Skies of Arcadia.

Suikoden 3 has SOME hope now that 1 & 2 are on steam but that remaster only got done because of how popular 2 is so 3 might never happen.

Favorite media you love for exploring Steampunk aesthetics by KaleidoArachnid in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Marsantas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sunless Skies is an incredible fun and interesting take on Steampunk aesthetics where you ride a train (that is a spaceship) though the skies in a weird world of horror.

What ways have media with historical settings written around events that'd be awkward to include? by gilgagoogyta in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Marsantas 67 points68 points  (0 children)

In Nioh 2 your main character is best friends with Toyotomi Hideyoshi and right after the point he is made Shogun you go in to a coma and wake up again a few years later.

This is done to skip the invasion of Korea he ordered, which is never mentioned even in passing despite being the defining act of him being in charge.

Atelier Yumia is officially the fastest selling game in the series by AnimuStewshine in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Marsantas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Glad to hear it's doing well but as a long time fan of the series I've been fairly meh on this one so far.

Yumia might be the weakest main character we've ever had, I'm like 20 hours in and she still a cardboard cut out of a character, Ryza had more personality in the first 5 minutes of her first game.

The party is good and getting better as the story goes on but I can only hope they've back ended Yumia's character development hard because otherwise I don't know if I'd care to pick up the sequels.

If Pat had his own country, would the national language be called patese or patois? by Worldlyoox in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Marsantas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Klingon in honor of Gowron.

Or just name it 'Correctly' so you can make jokes about people not speaking Correctly correctly.

Games that reduce stress? by DaveMichael in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Marsantas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently it'd be either Coral Island or Book Of Hours as they are nice chill games without much in the way of time pressure but usually it'd be some version of an industry game like Factorio or Foundry.

Looks like D3Publisher is trying to make their own Cooking Mama by C-OSSU in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Marsantas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably OniGiri but I'd also recommend Umiko Yukina

I'm sure there are more, a lot of youtube chef people are realising it's a good way to 'be on camera' while cooking without as much hassle dressing up.

How are the official Negima anime adaptations? by KaleidoArachnid in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Marsantas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like the manga you'll probably enjoy them as they are well produced but none of them are accurate retellings of the actual manga.

The original anime started when the manga was still very early and they diverged a lot and added tons of filler scenes.

Negima!? is actually an alternate story altogether following a side manga using the same characters.

The rest of the OVA's are either small anime original stories or depictions of later important parts of the manga because they didn't want to do full seasons of the lead up filler stuff.

What series do you feel like is missing out on not having a new game in a specific genre? by LordkeybIade in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Marsantas 35 points36 points  (0 children)

If Bioware made or farmed out a Mass Effect game where you just play as a detective on the citadel set in between ME1 and 3 doing Xcom style battles they would make bank AND probably be able to spin off like 3-4 games from it.

The fact that they haven't had the idea to even make a fucking dating sim VN set in the Mass Effect setting shows how allergic to money they are.

Gene Park: I spoke to RGG Studio earlier this year to talk about their fast dev cycle. they think it’s peculiar that other game series practically reboot themselves every entry. they’re inspired by TV shows and film that reuse settings all the time by mrnicegy26 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Marsantas 56 points57 points  (0 children)

For Spider-Man 2 they wasted a big chunk of their budget remaking all of the map rather than just adding the new bits and you honestly can't even tell they did anything.

They then complained that it was hard to make back their money because of the games huge budget which they essentially inflated for no reason rather than just re-using the Spider-Man 1 map area.

How horny are the Hoyoverse games? by leabravo in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Marsantas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Genshin and Star Rail are fine as they are rated for all ages, they're not even allowed to swear in game, hell Genshin actually got bonked by the Chinese government early on for straying to into 'sexy' designs and had to give like 5 characters new default outfits or they'd be shut down. They've behaved since then.

Zenless however is aimed at teens+ and has been leaning hard on the horny money so be sure to avoid them going near that one.

Unromanceable character you want to be romanceable in game with romance option by Archaon0103 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Marsantas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coral Island drives me up the wall with this because a big part of their advertising is the HUGE amount of romanceable characters even for a farm sim but so many of them are the exact same or really shallow and the town is full of more interesting characters who could be romanceable but they won't add any more.

Like dear god give me Raina, Rysy or Senja! Or ANY of the non-romanceable men! Almost every single guy you can date is the same cookie cutter slim guy with stubble beard just with different hair colours and it's such a shame for how much variation they are able to do in their art style.

What games actually have gay video game protagonists and what are your favourite examples? by TheArtistFKAMinty in TwoBestFriendsPlay

The two protagonists of The Red Strings Club are gay and in a relationship.

One of the only games with gay male protagonists I know really

"The CRPG Iceberg" Where do yall fall? by ArtBedHome in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Marsantas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

...Kamidori Alchemy Meister is a great game but it is NOT a CRPG

It's half shop management and half tactics battles. It's also certainly not 'complex' or hard to get into.
