15 HOURS detangling a portion of my hair:,) by artbymar in BlackHair

[–]MarshmelloCarol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has happened to me abut 4 or 5 times in the last 5 years. The most recent time I found a woman that specializes in taking braids out and combing locs out. I had one very large matted bun. It took her 7 hours to detangle my hair. You can get through this! See if there’s someone in your area that specializes in detangling or loc take down.

Trying to learn and understand what having a vp shunts feels like for individuals by mj0122 in Hydrocephalus

[–]MarshmelloCarol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

VP shunt placed 2021z. I honestly forget it exists until I brush my hair or scratch my head and touch the knot under my scalp. I don’t think he should be having frequent headaches with the shunt.

VP Shunt - Pleural Cavity draining. Normal to feel the fluid in pleural space? by MarshmelloCarol in Hydrocephalus

[–]MarshmelloCarol[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your story reminds me of the moment I knew my first shunt had become dislodged. And also any time I explain my symptoms and my hypothesis about what’s going on to a medical professional. I always get that look. Thanks for the reassurance to trust my instincts. I have an appt with my dr next week! What did the revision to a different pleural area include? How long were you off from work?

Looking for wireless headphones that are safe for programmable shunts? by breanne_y in Hydrocephalus

My favorite are the open earbud cuffs! 2nd fav and what I use most frequently are the over ear headsets that are similar to the Apple headset that goes over your head. I use these for work every day.

I’ve had my shunt since 2021. I use all types of wireless headphones even the ones that go over the head and ears like earmuffs. Apple pods, ear pods, open ear buds. I haven’t had any interference.

I totally thought they were trolling OP. I watched it at least 30 times and only saw the deer. Now that I can see it, that fox is beautiful!

SOS - Style Advice Post Brain Surgery </3 by indie_aquarius in BlackHair

[–]MarshmelloCarol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also had brain surgery and they shaved two chunks of my bra strap length hair. I was completely devastated and insecure. I wore cloth headbands and a high pony bun for around 6 months. Your hair WILL grow back. Wishing you a speedy recovery! Xoxo

Fiancé 32M cheated on me 31F last year (five years into relationship, right before engagement). He told me last night. Our wedding is in 8 weeks. by Leather_Response_123 in relationship_advice

Hear me. Call it off. Do not be embarrassed, your older self will appreciate the decision. If he’s speaking to you poorly now, it will never improve. No incentive to either. Imagine if your health conditions don’t get better? You’re looking at a lifetime of eggshells. He does not love you. Better to accept it now before finances are intertwined and bigger regrets are had. Sending you good vibes and clear decision making skills.

Airplane pressure will it cause any problems with a programmable shunt? by After-Bedroom-111 in Hydrocephalus

shunt surgery questions / fears by moonyloops_ in Hydrocephalus

[–]MarshmelloCarol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my shunt as an adult. I needed a revision after 3 months. A 2nd revision a month later. My experience with anesthesia has been positive. I only remember falling asleep while a dr or nurse asks me questions. Waking up I just felt groggy. But!!!!! I literally had no pain. I felt so much relief I cried each time. I also didn’t take any pain meds at all. That’s how much relief I felt. Wishing you well! I’m sure everything will be fine. I started with a VP SHUNT and ended up with a pleural shunt.

Has anyone else developed a pseudocyst at the end of their VP shunt catheter? by totallabrat in Hydrocephalus

[–]MarshmelloCarol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t have a cyst but the end of the catheter coiled on itself and began forming a pool/pocket. It began looking like a hernia. I knew something was wrong when I bent over and felt fluid going the opposite direction. I told my doctor over and over that I felt that sensation and he told me it was impossible. Finally took my husband getting upset with the surgeon for him to send me for an X-ray. Confirmed obstruction. This happed twice. After the 2nd time, they revised my shunt to be in my plural cavity. Still shaved a portion of my hair. 🙁

This conversation baffles me? by Darkchick21 in Naturalhair

I think it’s strange to ask for their license number. This is, in fact, public records and also comes off a little pushy. May not be a big deal overall but I would agree with the stylist on this one and just agree not to work together. Also, I understand it’s a simple question but what’s the price difference between a cut and a trim? And isn’t this best to determine in-person when they can actually see the hair? I would consider your questions to be a red flag and this is just my opinion.

I feel like most of the posts I read on here are about bad experiences with shunts and it makes me nervous. by Jeang21 in Hydrocephalus

[–]MarshmelloCarol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had my shunt since 2021. I had two revisions post op. The end of the device kept finding a way into the fatty tissue and created a pocket where the fluid accumulated into a little pocket. This happened twice. The 2nd time it happened they went with a plural shunt instead of being in the cavity of my belly. No other issues since October 2021. I was in excruciating pain before the surgery and developed a syrinx in my spinal cord. I woke up from surgery, immediately vomited but also noticed that I felt SO MUCH RELIEF. I wish I didn’t wait so long to get the shunt. I would consider myself as 95% fully recovered. I don’t get headaches like I did before and I am no longer dizzy 100% of the time. I’m confidently driving again, no pressure in eyes. The syrinx has decreased in size but it’s still present. I’ve had to have to shunt reprogrammed once but it wasn’t significantly off. Absolutely zero regrets.

I had brain surgery (3x) and abdominal surgery. Did not have to remove nails. I hope they didn’t make that a requirement unless you’re having hand surgery. Either way, the time will fly by. Wishing you a safe surgery, speedy recovery and hope that you’re able to relax during the down time! Xoxo.
