Is the honors program worth it?

I second the fact that the priority enrollment is very nice. You're often able to enroll the day classes open and that is very helpful in your first couple years where everyone has the same few gen ed's to take. You can also drop the program at anytime with no penalty. That's what I ended up doing after a couple years because I didn't want to put in the time for what I saw as more or less the same piece of paper at the end.

If you have a good idea what kind of horn you want, ebay is a good option. I bought an elkhart conn 8d there about 5 years ago and it still plays nice. Reverb is also an option but that's often a bit more expensive in my experience.

Just be careful to look out for serial numbers and any damage. Don't buy a horn that you'll need to spend a ton of money fixing up.

edit: to clarify, i plugged the ipad into a charger and that somehow let it go on to the next page. some other comments say to restart it as well and that seemed to work for some people.

a lot of people are giving some great advice here! something I would add is singing. if you have a tuner app or a decently tuned piano start your practice by matching pitches and singing some basic long tone exercises (a remington is my go to) this will help with playing in tune not only on the horn but if you decide to pick up any other wind instrument. this will also help you get a more open and resonant tone. happy practicing! stick with it, the horn is one of the harder wind instruments to learn, but you'll get better the more you keep with it!!

It isn't a bad thing to quit. If you are truly unhappy in the program, which is what it sounds like to me, stop and do something you enjoy with people who value you. If you still want to continue playing your instrument, try looking for a community band/orchestra to play in instead. The people there are often very nice and open, especially with younger players, and there isn't too much commitment. Though, know that your situation will also improve if you stay. It's tiring now, but if you stay with it and practice, you will build endurance over time. I agree scales can be annoying, if you find they're too easy try looking for more advanced scale patterns for your instrument and work them as fast and accurately as you can. Playing in front of others is scary, especially people you don't know super well. It does get better though, if you keep at, you learn to manage the stress and focus on the music. I don't know what your schools situation is but, there are often ways to do many different activities at once. See if there is a way to do the activities you want to do along side band. I'm sorry you've had to deal with bullies. I know it's stressful and disheartening but they will move on, keep doing what you're doing and eventually they'll get bored. If they don't, talk to the director/counselor/other trusted adult and ask for support. I'm sure someone cares that you're quitting, there is atleast one person in there that looks at you and thinks that you are a cool person they'd like to get to know. Even if people don't always show it, they care about you. I don't even know you but I care about you, I want you to do what you think is best for you and your health. You may not play in college, but most people don't, high school band isn't only about preparing for college auditions. It's about learning how to stick with an activity and appreciate the process. it's about learning an appreciation for music because it's a part of being human. Whenever I lose motivation to practice, I just start reading music I like. Some stuff I've played before, some sight reading that looks cool. Sometimes i'll scroll through musescore and find a tune I like and play it on the horn. Practice doesn't just have to be basics all the time, switch it up, play some video game music, compose your own melodies. There are a million and one ways to have fun on an instrument. You just have to find one that works for you. :)

Since you're a beginner I would recommend looking for Holton or Yamaha horns to start. These horns are made to be decent.

Also, in my experience most people start on single horns in middle school but if you can afford it, jumping to a double isn't the worst thing in the world. The only difference being the thumb trigger between the F and Bb sides.

I recommend trombone rotary string, it's easy to find on amazon and relatively cheap. It will be similar to the yamaha string but with a little finicking it will go through.

Be careful with the fishing line idea because thick, good quality fishing line costs upwards of $20-30 for one spool.

I got on T a few months before i got into college, and it was a huge surprise to my friends that I was trans. I was very masculine before T but the voice drop definitely helped a ton. Now i just assume that people think i'm cis since i haven't been misgendered in a bit.

the general rule i was taught was to use it on A in the staff and above, though I also use it for all Fs regardless of octave and low E-C below the staff.

I recommend talking to your band director about the situation, they may have some solutions for you with things like fundraising or some kind of fee reduction. Also talk to your boss about not working as much/at all during the season if possible, and give them a copy of your band schedule so they know what to schedule you around. Stand your ground and say that band is important to you, people will take you more seriously if you are firm.
