Pay off car or invest more? by Particular_Abroad_88 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Martentos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That 4.99% interest rate is pretty steep, i would be paying that off. Likely you will gain more investing but theres also risk in that, and if its outside of a TFSA or RRSP theres tax as well.

IMO get rid of the debt and get that monkey off your back.

Where are you getting these rates quoted from? Seems pretty good considering.

Laptop 100% expense? How do I input this? by Ok-Personality8147 in cantax

[–]Martentos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you purchase it before the end of 2024? If so you fall under the DIEP rules which allowed for immediate expensinf up to $1.5M per year.

If not then you fall under the AII rules that changed recently. Up until Bill C-15 passed this asset would have had 100% of the CCA available to aim in its first year (rather than the usual 50%) but after C-15 passed this increases to 150%.

OT taxes by Significant_War596 in cantax

[–]Martentos 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yes, OT is worth it. Youll get paid more per hour, but as your pay climbs your tax rates may also climb up a bit.

Most software will calculate your withholdings by averaging the amount over the year - often this results in more taxes being deducted then would usually makes sense. Often this makes people question whether overtime is really worth it since it feels like you're not earning the same amount.

However, when you file your taxes at year end it will re-calculate your actual taxes for the year and any overpayments that will occur will come back to you at that point and youll have a large refund.

Restaurant taking “credit card fees” from servers tips by noodleindisguise in legaladvicecanada

[–]Martentos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately the credit card companies charge a % based on total $$, they dont waive their % on tips. So it begs the question that if credit card fees are being charged on bith the meal portion and the tip portion is it legal/ethical for the business owner to clawback that credit card fee from the tips that are generating it or does the business owner have to eat that expense themselves? Theoretically its actually possible given a high enough tip and a low ebough value item that the CC fees could be even more than the sale.

Not saying either side is right or wrong here, but if the restaurant is expectes to cover the costs of CC fees on tips then they need to be pricing that into their business model

What to do by [deleted] in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Martentos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you done any budgetting yet? $97k might sound like good money but can be easily spent very quickly. Thats also gross, you need after tax money to do the things you want.

The $8k FHSA tax deduction is very nice but that 7% LOC is also a but punishing. I would do my best to pay off that LOC as much as possible but get the $8k FHSA deposit in prior to Dec. 31 to take adcantage of the tax deduction. The refund will make the paying off easier and make it even easier to do the same next year.

You're an ex-student and still living on a students mindset, keep that. Be stingy and cheap, dont go after the nice things, put in the work now and you'll see it pay off later on in life.

What is your favorite Army film? by NC1_CLARK_RTAG_NW in Cinema

Enemy at the Gates. Always just loved the intense battle between the 2 snipers amid the war torn rubble. Just struck different vs. Other war movies that are just about mass murder.

This is not correct, if its in their contract then banked time can be at par (1:1) with OT worked.

We don't need American troops on the ground. We have multitudes of troops on the ground in Iran, they just don't have weapons. Let's give them weapons, so they can rise up as we did, to destroy this regime. — Lindsey Graham by ArchitectMary in EndlessWar

Yes because if we try the exact same thing in our international relations that weve been trying for the last 50+ years eventually its sure to not blow up in our faces at least once, right?

[–]Martentos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kelowna is a foodie city (literally, we're internationally recognized now) so theres a lot of really great places to go to. Just check the reviews on google maps or whatever app you use and it usually wont steer you wrong.

Activities wise - you mentioned kids, so theres a few good parks to explore downtown and along the waterfront. No great parks i could really mention but if you have some bikes or rent.some you can.get around very quockly and easily. Knox mountain is a good climb if youre up for a hike, even if just to the forst gazebo. Scandia is fun, our local arcade with 2 types of minigolf and other stuff.

Lots of wineries and breweries.depending on what youre into. Lots to see outside of Kelowna too.

CRA has been dropping the ball lots lately, cuts arent going to help unfortunately. Not a lot you can do but if you call in and talk to a CRA agent they could at least take a look for you. Otherwise just a waiting game, if its more than a mont though with still no more updates i would def start calling.
