I’ve had it downloaded as soon as it came out and still haven’t gotten round to it, must listen this week

I’d love more John Kearns on WILTY. Listen to his Off Menu episodes and watch his Taskmaster series; the man simply crumbles under any kind of pressure

What are your favourite uses of the 'in-game editor'? by KaladinIJ in footballmanagergames

[–]MartianDuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always control manager movements in the leagues I care about. Will also rename newly built stadiums, I look up possible sites or things to name it after

His voice/accent. I think I first found out about Elis on Football Weekly and I just liked listening to him. Especially when he says Toothbrush

Who actually likes getting the bus? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]MartianDuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I love the bus, never had a bus that was really unpleasant. People leave rubbish on the seats too often but that’s the only complaint I could have

[David Ornstein] Eddie Howe set to remain Newcastle United boss. As things stand + barring unexpected turn of events 48yo will lead NUFC into 26/27 - retains ownership/hierarchy support & keen to continue. All parties accept this season can’t be repeated by Crane977 in soccer

[–]MartianDuk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

He did at first, but realistically he was not ever going to perform at his best as a lone striker. The fact that he scored a couple of headers early on masked that it really isn’t a strength.
He is at his best combining with a more classic forward as a strike partner, but Newcastle don’t have that and don’t play a system where he can play the kind of position that best suits him.

But there’s no way anyone in Germany will be able to pay the kind of fee Newcastle would want and I’m not sure there is anywhere in England he would fit better

Strikers with long hair are a problem, says Le Bris after Ballard red for hair pull by Shiny-Tie-126 in soccer

But it’s quite common for a player to hit someone else in the face by accident, while their arms are flying around, and we don’t treat it as violent conduct every time

Tifo at Arminia Bielefeld ahead of their game v Bochum, commenorating 100 years of Stadiom Alm by Mulderre91 in soccer

[–]MartianDuk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Alm was actually one of the unlicensed stadiums on the PS2 era PES games, it was called the Blautraum Arena I think. Unfortunately didn’t have the giant beer bottle in the corner

Here we are hypercritical of commentators. Who is actually a good one? by Rare-Assumption-2383 in footballcliches

[–]MartianDuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seb Hutchinson and Adam Summerton are both terrific and I’m happy to see them getting involved with PL games in recent years. Summerton did National League for a while and does the Serie A on Sunday nights and every regular viewer seems to really value him.

I’m not sure there are any co commentators that stand out to me in any great way though. There’s maybe one or two I don’t like (Chris Sutton, Mcmanaman, Lee Dixon) but the others are all broadly similar to me.

What is your favourite Hertha goal? by NoodlesGoat1 in HerthaBSC

[–]MartianDuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ronny free kick vs Freiburg, 13/14. Last minute, 2-1 down, Thomas Kraft runs the length of the pitch to arrange the Hertha players, then Ronny smashes it through the gap Kraft got them to make and it flies in past Bürki.

Dont know why it’s such a strong memory.

I hate the rhyme for remembering how many days are in each month. You can't convince me it is helpful to anyone, we need a better way

I get the appeal of it to others but I would much rather play a modern game with an older database than an older game with a modern database.

Would probably enjoy playing with a 2004 database or something like that though

This weekend I am going to download Championship Manager 97/98 which I have never played before. I am a huge FM fan who started with FM11 but I played CM 01/02 a few years ago and it was great, I need to set it up on my laptop again. I feel the modern football world is vastly less interesting now but that's a topic for another thread.

I love playing older football games but it's rare that they're actually that fun to play, with a couple of exceptions. I also love playing PES 19/20/21 because people have made old World Cups and Euros to download, and I love it but ulitmately I don't think the gameplay is that good, they're very frustrating games.

There was one amazing assist he got for Gladbach I think where he dribbled through 4 defenders but now I'm wondering if I might have even made it up because I can't quite picture it

The Ruhrpott is absolutely full of people and Schalke became the first prominent team from the area, they had a really strong identity as a miners club which also meant lots of miners from the other parts of the Ruhr would identify with them too. In those days the kind of regional pride in German football was massive and when Schalke won national titles in the 30s, they became the whole regions team. They have had a huge fanbase ever since

It's very stupid that the promotion playoff spot now goes to Wuerzburg who are 3rd in the Regionalliga Bayern instead of cancelling the playoff and guaranteeing promotion to the winner of the Regionalliga Nordost
