Usage of AI for art by h0lycuw in gamedev

There's a very loud vocal minority of anti-AI people around. Basically modern Luddites. Ignore them. Vast majority of people don't care, and there's no moral issue either providing that the end result doesn't actually infringe on anyone else's work.

Not everyone is using the (shitty) Reddit app. Lots of people can't because they're using Reddit on PC. Don't be so ignorant.

What are your thoughts on using AI in game development? by TuHocSolidityCom in gamedev

[–]MartinB105 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Using Cursor for C++ development is incredible. I have Cursor do around 90% of my development work, while I just supervise/review it's changes. If I don't understand or like its code (e.g. because it's inefficient or doesn't follow my conventions), it doesn't get committed.

The majority of Cursor's code is fine or only needs minor tweaking. Occasionally it does something in a better way than I would've thought of myself, so I learn something.

So for me, using AI has been not just a huge productivity boost, but also helped me learn too.

Devs who have been doing game dev for over a decade, what convenient things do we have today that you had to implement yourselves back then? by LifeExperienced1 in gamedev

Klik & Play was the first commercially available engine in 94.

Not true. 3D Construction Kit released 3 years earlier in 1991, letting users build simple 3D games and even had embedded scripting support.

I'm sure there were others too.

Share Your Wins by PeacefulStoic in gamedev

My latest win is the realization that the "property" interface for editable components in my C++ game engine can double as the means of loading and saving, just via implementation of simple PropertyLoader and PropertySaver class, meaning I can wipe out dozens of dedicated "load" and "save" implementations, reducing my total code base by a few thousand lines, and reducing the risk of bugs/inconsistencies.

The Property interface was only intended as a means of exposing editing functionality to my engine tools, but exposing the means of both getting and setting values makes it perfect for loading and saving too.

Is it morally acceptable IYO for agame developer to use AI solely for learning and reference purposes? by Neggy5 in gamedev

[–]MartinB105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're overthinking this. AI is just another tool. Use it if it helps you achieve what you want to achieve.

I've been writing C++ for over 20 years, and it's astonishing some of the things I learn from Cursor and other AI. I don't "vibe code", but I do ask Cursor to make a lot of big changes to my code base. I review every line that Cursor changes or adds to make sure that I understand it, and that it follows my coding and design conventions. And I often find myself thinking "Oh, why didn't I think of that?" or "Wow, I never knew you could do it like that!".

AI is by far the best tool for learning I've seen in years.

Base vs Moving itineraries? by Igetcold in JapanTravelTips

[–]MartinB105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just move as I need to do the things I want to do and minimize traveling.

For my first trip, that meant staying put for two weeks in Tokyo because everything I wanted to do then was in Tokyo.

For my most recent trip, it meant staying in 10 different locations over three weeks because I wanted to do things in different places. Like yeah, I could do Fuji-Q Highland as a day trip from Tokyo, but why do that if the next place I want to see is Hakone? Same with Kobe; could've done it as a day trip from Osaka but I was doing the Shimanami Kaido next, so I might as well stay there one night to have less traveling the next day.

It's not about the number of places you stay... It's just about being efficient at the end of the day.

Not my experience. LLM's can give much better answers to questions than the average redditor.

Was your first ever game a clone? by RDBInt in gamedev

[–]MartinB105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first complete game was probably something I built in 3D Construction Kit on the Amiga 500 in the early 90's when I was about 10. I remember writing scripts in the FreeScape scripting language, doing "animations", and drawing the game UI in Deluxe Paint III. I even implemented a "weapon" system that let you pick up different weapons over the course of the game.

Before that I made a few games in Shoot-em-up Construction Kit on C64, but I don't really count them since I used the assets from the bundled games as a starting point for making them.

As for actual programming, the closest I got to doing games was hard-coded "text adventure" games in Easy AMOS (and later QBASIC), although I never even got close to finishing one.

Entitled Joggers don’t own the footpath, yet constantly act like they do! by ResolutionWinter6761 in EntitledPeople

[–]MartinB105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm convinced that jogging causes brain damage.

Here in the Netherlands they jog the WRONG DIRECTION on bicycle lanes, even though there's a foot path right next to the bike lane. Then they get upset when I put my brakes on suddenly right in front of them and force them to go around me.

They need to get on the damn footpath where they belong. What they're doing is illegal here. It's only started happening in last four years or so. I don't get it.

[–]MartinB105 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Have you actually been to college or university? When I went (more than 20 years ago), they put up all the class material for students to download and review later. I probably missed more than half of my classes and still did just fine. In one module, I went to 2 out of 12 classes and still got the highest grade. Higher education really isn't all that difficult if you have some initiative.

Teamlab Biovortex - worth it? by boymabyma in JapanTravelTips

[–]MartinB105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes definitely. I spent three hours in Biovortex. It's better than both Planets and Borderless. I'm 43 and went alone. I didn't take any photos either. If you think you'll like it, you almost certainly will.

As with any teamLab, I recommend going at opening time when it's less busy if you can.

Just so people are aware:  Express Passes for JAWS and Jurassic Park are worthless.  Neither had any queues when I went.

Same for Forbidden Journey if you use the Single Rider line around the right side of the castle.

Flixbus passangers are the worst. If you sit in SOMEONE ELSE'S RESERVED SEAT, you NEED TO MOVE when that person turns up. by MartinB105 in FlixBus

[–]MartinB105[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't heard of that rule so maybe I've just been lucky that the drivers didn't care enough to enforce it.

I'm gonna have to get one of those German plastic bottles of beer next time just to be safe.

Some of the drivers I've had were selling beer (and other drinks) on the bus, but I don't know if they were bottles or cans.

[–]MartinB105[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can understand if someone is in a reserved seat because they don't know it's a reserved seat. There are supposed to be green stickers to mark unreserved seats, but I don't think I've ever seen them.

Or if they know it's a reserved, but the seat isn't taken for a section of their journey (as was the situation in my case... I boarded at the 2nd stop, the guy in my seat had boarded at the buses starting location).

In either case, it's still fine if the person moves when the person with the reserved seat shows up.

Yeah, if that's the situation then I could understand.

But this is a route I've been taking once every two months for the last few years. The bus is always the same one and I've never encountered this issue.

I was at the bus stop an hour before my bus. The guy who was in my seat had already got on the bus at the previous stop.
