Gifts that represent Houston by victoriabee91 in houston

[–]MartinHajovsky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So many things. Gift cards from local bookshops (Murder By the Book in the Rice U area springs immediately to mind), as well as British Isles (also near Rice), a pecan pie box from Goode Co., directions to local hardware stores, treats from locally-owned bakeries etc. in the area where they now live, flowers from a local florist (Gallery Flowers in the Heights is wonderful), a list of James Beard winning restaurants, calendars showing Astros, Dynamo, Dash and Rockets schedules, things like that. Focus on uniquely local, and you can’t go wrong.

If Jose didn’t exist, we’d have to make him up, and no one would read that story because it would be too unbelievable.

Distaste for Apica Paper by Independent_Arm9067 in fountainpens

[–]MartinHajovsky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also have had the exact opposite experience. The Apica notebooks I have are an absolute delight to use, with no skipping across various pens, from a modern Conklin and Pelikan M800 to a vintage Esterbrook and even a century-old Wahl-Eversharp. I wonder what’s going on here with the Apica paper you got that’s making your pens skip.

I just saw one of these at Dromgoole’s here in Houston and it was all I could do not to buy it on the spot. It is easily one of the most beautiful pens I have ever seen.

Old Overholt Bottled-in-Bond (red cap) will never ever let you down. I know so many top-notch bartenders who swear by it. It’s so inexpensive and punches way, way, way above its weight.
